A computer method, system and code, for representing a natural-language document in a vector form suitable for text manipulation operations are disclosed. The method involves determining (a) for each of a plurality of terms selected from one of (i) non-generic words in the document, (ii) proximately arranged word groups in the document, and (iii) a combination of (i) and (ii), a selectivity value of the term related to the frequency of occurrence of that term in a library of texts in one field, relative to the frequency of occurrence of the same term in one or more other libraries of texts in one or more other fields, respectively. The document is represented as a vector of terms, where the coefficient assigned to each term includes a function of the selectivity value determined for that term.

High-throughput screening method and apparatus arm described. The method includes placing cells on a substrate defining a plurality of discrete microwells, at a well density of greater than about 100/cm, with the number of cells in each well being less than about 1000, and where the cells in each well have been exposed to a selected agent. The change in conductance in each well is determined by applying a low-voltage, AC signal across a pair of electrodes placed in that well, and synchronously measuring the conductance across the electrodes, to monitor the level of growth or metabolic activity of cells contained in each well. Also disclosed is an apparatus for carrying out the screening method.

Disclosed is an automated system, machine-readable storage medium embodying computer-executable code, and method for generating descriptive words and optionally, multi-word groups derived from a digitally encoded, natural-language input text that describes a concept, invention, or event in a selected field. The system includes (a) an electronic digital computer, (b) a database of words and optionally, word-groups derived from a plurality of texts, and (c) machine-readable storage medium embodying computer-executable code for accessing the database. The database provides, or can be used to calculate, a selectivity value for each of the words and optionally, word groups contained in or derived from the input text. Words and optionally, word groups having an above-threshold selectivity value are selected as descriptive terms from the input text.

Compositions and methods are disclosed for detecting multiple target analytes in a sample using microparticles having molecular tags attached by cleavable linkages. Generally, an assay mixture is formed comprising a sample and a reagent comprising multiple such microparticles under conditions that permit stable complexes to form between binding moieties on the surfaces of the microparticles and the analytes. In one aspect of the invention, the a second binding composition is added so that complexes form among the microparticle-bound binding moieties, the analytes, and second binding moieties of the second binding composition. Such second binding moieties have cleavage-inducing moieties attached that upon activation cause the cleavage of the cleavable linkages and the release of molecular tags. Released molecular tags are separated and the presence and/or amount of the target analytes are determined based on the analysis of the released and separated molecular tags.

Tagged microparticle compositions and methods

Disclosed are a computer-readable code, system and method for classifying a target document in the form of a digitally encoded natural-language text as belonging to one or more of two or more different classes. For each of a plurality of non-generic words and/or words groups characterizing the target document, there is determined a selectivity value calculated as the frequency of occurrence of that term in a library of texts in one field, relative to the frequency of occurrence of the same term in one or more other libraries of texts in one or more other fields, respectively, and the document is represented as a vector of terms, where the coefficient assigned to each term is a function of the selectivity value determined for that term. There is then determined, for each of the plurality of sample texts having associated classification identifiers, a match score related to the number of descriptive terms present in or derived from that text that match those in the target text. From the selected matched texts, and the associated classification identifiers, a classification determination of the target document is made.

Text-classification code, system and method

Disclosed are a computer-readable code, system and method for classifying a target document in the form of a digitally encoded natural-language text as belonging to one or more of two or more different classes. Each of a plurality of non-generic words and optionally, words groups characterizing the target document is selected as a descriptive term if the term has an above-threshold selectivity value in at least one library of texts in a field, where the selectivity value of a term is a measure of the field-specificity of that term. There is then determined, for each of the plurality of sample texts having associated classification identifiers, a match score related to the number of descriptive terms present in or derived from that text that match those in the target text. From the selected matched texts, and the associated classification identifiers, a classification determination of the target document is made.

Text-classification system and method

A computer method for representing a natural-language document in a vector form suitable for text manipulation operations is disclosed. Text representation and method

A method and system for registering volumetric scan data of a patient surgical site with actual patient position are disclosed. In practicing the method, position data relating to (i) the x,y,z coordinates of a detector screen in fixed coordinate system, and the x,y, coordinates of patient features on the screen are used to determine the x,y,z coordinates of the patient features in the fixed coordinate system. These coordinates are then matched with the coordinates of the same patient features taken from pre-op scan data, e.g., CT scan data, to place the CT scan data in the fixed coordinate system.

High throughput screening method and apparatus

Microfabricated, asymmetrical, reservoir-containing particles for use in the oral delivery of biopolymer therapeutic agents such as peptides, proteins and oligonucleotides are disclosed. The particles are encapsulated in enteric-coated capsules or tablets to provide passage through the stomach and release of a suspension of the particles in the intestinal lumen. The particles have a selected shape, and uniform dimensions preferably in the 100 &mgr;m to 1 mm range. The reservoirs open to the face of the particle and are filled with a therapeutic agent and selected excipients. The excipients are selected to delay the dissolution/release of the agent from the particle reservoirs for 5-60 minutes after the particle is released in the intestinal lumen. Alternatively, the pore is plugged with an erodable material. The face of the particle is grafted with a layer of muco-adhesive ligands designed to quickly bind the particle to the intestinal mucosa for several minutes to several hours after release of the particles from the enteric-coated carrier.

The method employs massive parallel synthesis by stepwise subunit addition or substituent addition in a dense capillary-tube array. The libraries allow high throughput screening of library compounds in either solid phase or solution phase, and position-related identification of active library compounds.

Method and apparatus for producing position addressable combinatorial

A method of analyzing the sequence of a polynucleotide analyte. The method includes contacting the analyte with a position-addressable array of oligonucleotides, each anchored to a solid support and having a 5'proximal and 3'-distal orientation. The hybridized oligonucleotides are then extended by strand-directed polymerase, to produce labeled, extended oligonucleotides at positions of the array corresponding to sequence matches between the array oligonucleotides and analyte regions. The pattern of label in the array is used to analyze analyte sequence.

Polynucleotide-array assay and methods

A method for producing a high-density, position-addressable gene array is disclosed. The method includes contacting an array of different-sequence oligonucleotides having a unique, known combinatorial sequence associated with each position in the array with a set of extended gene probe templates which are complementary to the oligonucleotides at one of the template end regions. After hybridization, the oligonucleotides in the array are extended by strand-directed polymerization to form the probe array. Also disclosed is a probe array device formed by the method.

Position-addressable polynucleotide arrays

Novelty glasses by which the wearer can visualize the rate and evenness of his breathing. The glasses comprise a conventional eyeglasses frame which supports a pair of multifaceted lenses in the lens support positions of the frame. Rotatably attached to the frame is a lightweight projection plate bearing a light-transmissive pattern. The plane of rotation of the projection plate is substantially parallel to the plane of the lenses, and the lateral distance between the plate and the lenses is easily adjusted. A stiff nose strap attached to the projection plate extends in an arc which passes under the wearer's nose when the lateral position of the projection plate is properly adjusted. The strap supports a slidably attached nose sail which can be positioned at any point along the strap to optimally intercept the nose-exhaled breath of the wearer. In this configuration, the wearer's nose-exhaled breath pushes the sail outwardly, causing the attached projection plate to rotate slightly away from its angular equilibration position, whereby the wearer observes a moving mosaic pattern.
