The downhole tool comprises a moveable member comprising a first surface defining a moveable boundary of a first chamber, and a second surface defining a moveable boundary of a second chamber. The downhole tool further comprises hydraulic circuitry selectively operable to establish reciprocating motion of the moveable member by exposing the first chamber to an alternating one of a first pressure and a second pressure that is substantially less than the first pressure.

Devices and methods for borehole seismic investigation. The devices can include a first sensor for acquiring data relating to a microseismic event, a second sensor for detecting the start of a microseismic event and a command module for activating the first sensor to transmit data when the second sensor detects the start of the microseismic event. The methods can include activating a first sensor to transmit data relating to a microseismic event when a second sensor detects the start of the microseismic event. The method can also include deactivating the first sensor, or stopping data transmission substantially when the microseismic event ends.

Borehole microseismic systems and methods

A method and apparatus is disclosed for monitoring microseismic activity in a formation. The method and apparatus include placing a tool string having a shuttle including a sensor thereon in a stimulation well, and activating the shuttle to acoustically couple the sensor to an inner surface of a casing. The sensor is acoustically decoupled from the tool string. Fluid is then injected into the formation via the tool string. The sensor is reengaged with the tool string. The tool string may then be removed from the stimulation well or moved to another position along the wellbore.

Method and apparatus for monitoring acoustic activity in a subsurface formation

A handling tool () for securely handling a radioactive source () comprises a first securing device and a second securing device. The first securing device comprises a chamber (), and an opening mechanism () for opening the chamber (). The opening mechanism opens the chamber when the chamber is brought in proximity with a source pocket that may contain a radioactive source (), and the opening mechanism closes the chamber when the chamber is withdrawn from the source pocket (). Handling tool for radioactive sources of logging while drilling devices

A sonic transmitter assembly for use in logging-while-drilling includes stacks of piezoelectric crystals that extend outwardly from a nodal plate member, and a generally tubular assembly that contains such stacks and has end portions that are sealingly mounted in diametrically opposed holes in a pipe member that forms a pan of the drill string. Spring mass isolator systems are employed to inhibit transmission of acoustic waves to the pipe member. Balanced mounting forces and the bilateral symmetry of the construction also inhibit transmission of acoustic waves to the pipe member, particularly waves which are asymmetric with respect to the longitudinal axis of the pipe member.

Transmitter for sonic logging-while-drilling

The invention relates to a tool having a valve (3c, 4c) for closing the tubing (100) of a well into which the tool has been placed. The valve member (4c) is controlled by means of a traction cable (17) via a hydraulic mechanism having two piston-and-cylinder assemblies (4b, 5e, 45; 1g, 4a, 41) which reduce the force applied on the valve member (4c) by the pressure of the fluid in the well and which amplify the force (f) applied thereto by the cable (17) in order to open said valve member.

Tool for closing a well tubing

The invention is directed to a locking mechanism for locking a tool to an anchor seat located in the tubing of a well, the locking mechanism comprising keys which are radially movable relative to the axis of the tool, the keys emerging via apertures in the body of the tool to engage in a groove of an anchor seat located in the well conduit. The groove of the anchor seat has an internal diameter smaller than the internal diameter of the well conduit. Each key is axially movable within the aperture between a high position and a low position. Structure is provided for retaining the keys in the high position, positioning the keys in a radially retracted position, so that the keys do not cause the tool to be secured in the anchor seat. Structure is also provided for positioning the keys in a radially extended position, causing the keys to contact the groove of the anchor seat, thereby locking the tool to the anchor seat.

Locking device for securing a tool in a well conduit

The invention relates to a tool suitable for closing a production column (100) of a well when the tool is located in a connector of enlarged diameter (101). The tool is lowered on the end of a cable (76) and includes a tilting valve member (60) which is oblong in shape and which is oriented longitudinally to pass through the corresponding oblong orifice of a valve seat (69) fixed to the connector, and is then oriented transversely in order to co-operate with said seat in order to close the production column when a traction force (F) is applied to the cable (76).
