A housing for a double spiral circulation pump includes a spiral housing and a multipartite rib. The spiral housing defines a flow channel. The multipartite rib is disposed in the housing to divide the flow channel. The multipartite rib includes at least two rib parts spaced from each other to define a gap therebetween.

Centrifugal pump impeller with a low specific speed of rotation

A radial impeller for use in centrifugal pumps wherein a reduction of the outer diameter entails a change in the total head but does not affect the capacity because the front coverplate of the impeller is inclined with reference to a plane that is normal to the impeller axis. The inclination of the outer marginal portion of the front coverplate with reference to such plane increases in response to decreasing outer diameter of the impeller. The specific speed of the impeller can be increased from approximately 11 to approximately 35 min.sup.-1 by reducing the outer diameters of the coverplates. The exit angles of the vanes are selected in such a way that they remain constant irrespective of the selected outer diameters of the coverplates within the range which is required to change the specific speed from 11 to 35.

The follow-up guide wheels of a multistage centrifugal pump define flow paths whose cross-sectional area increases exclusively in the axial direction of the respective stages, or axially and radially inwardly, to thus allow for a reduction of the outer diameters of the guide wheels without reducing the efficiency of the pump.

To measure a wide range of flow rates, and particularly such low flow rates as 0.5 liters per hour, while being able to accurately also measure rates of about 100 liters per hour, fluid is introduced axially into a rotor (14, 36, 40) which has outlet openings (24, 36, 45) positioned at their circumference, the rotor being rotated by reaction on the rotor upon fluid flow from the outlet openings. The rotor operates within a fluid flow chamber (15) from which is conducted outwardly through a duct positioned thereabove. Inflow of fluid may be guided for linear flow by guide ribs (13). The rotor may be a hollow disk-like structure (FIGS. 1-3) with spiral guide vanes therebetween, or a T-shaped tubular structure (FIGS. 4-6). If fuel consumption of an internal combustion engine is to be measured in which pressurized fluid is supplied to the engine and excess returned, two such flow meters can be combined on a common shaft, with respectively oppositely facing outlet openings (36, 45), so that differential flow only is being measured, hence accurately measuring fuel consumption by the engine. Rotation of the rotor is sensed by an electro-optical sensor (29, 37).

A centrifugal pump comprises a casing which has two volutes disposed substantially diametrically opposite each other in such a way that the end of the first volute is adjacent to the start of the second volute. The outer diameter of the casing approximates or equals the diameter of the first volute in the region of the end of the first volute. This contributes to compactness of the casing. The volutes surround a rotary impeller or a guide wheel which is installed in the casing downstream of the impeller. Each volute extends along an arc of at most 180 degrees. The casing can have one or more elongated channels extending from the end of the first volute, along the second volute, and to a common outlet nozzle for both volutes.

The double volute casing of a centrifugal pump has a main portion which has first and second volutes extending along arcs of not more than 180 degrees. The outer diameter of the main portion equals or approximates the outer diameter of the end of the first volute, and such end is adjacent to the start of the second volute whose end communicates with an outlet nozzle of the main portion. The latter has two channels which flank the second volute and extend between the end of the first volute and the outlet nozzle. The inner sides of the channels are open and face the axial passage of the main portion. Such inner sides are sealed from the axial passage by tubular inserts which are installed in and are separably fastened to the main portion of the casing. The passage receives a single-suction or a double-suction impeller or a stationary guide wheel which is located downstream of the impeller. The main portion of the casing is a one-piece casting.

Erosion of parts owing to cavitation in the part-load region of operation of a centrifugal pump is reduced or eliminated by equipping the pump with an annular diffuser which is installed upstream of the annular intake of the impeller. The impeller portion immediately downstream of the inlet edge, where the vanes begin, is bounded by a surface which diverges at an angle of 8 to 20 degrees, as considered in the direction of fluid flow in the impeller. The diffuser has a smaller first cross section which is remote from and a larger second cross section which is nearer to the impeller. The area of the smaller cross section is between one-half and nine-tenths of the area of the larger cross section. If the diffuser has a conical internal surface, the angle of divergence of such conical surface (as considered in the direction of fluid flow toward the impeller) is between 5 and 15 degrees. If the diffuser is internally stepped, the ratio of its length to the diameter of the larger cross section is between 0.2 to one and one to one.

Means for reducing cavitation-induced erosion of centrifugal pumps

A radial or semiaxial impeller for centrifugal pumps has an annulus of vanes whose inlet edges are disposed at the periphery of a circle and are bounded by convex transition surfaces having small radii of curvature. The inner portions of the suction sides of vanes are bounded by flat or slightly curved surfaces which merge gradually into concave surfaces bounding the outer portions of the respective suction sides. The length of each flat or slightly curved surface is between 3 millimeters and the vane pitch. The ratio of the radii of curvature of transition surfaces at the inlet edges of the vanes to the vane pitch is between 0.0035 and 0.04 and/or the ratio of these radii to the average thickness of the inlet portion of a conventional vane is between 0.04 and 0.50. Such construction of the vanes reduces the likelihood of excessive erosion as a result of cavitation.

Impeller for centrifugal pumps

A fluid circulating apparatus includes a housing which forms a part of an aggregate, for instance a heat exchanger. The housing has an inlet portion for admission of fluid into a first compartment and an outlet port which communicates with a pressure chamber of the housing. One wall of the housing has at least one aperture through which fluid can flow from the first compartment into the heat exchanger proper, and at least one second aperture through which fluid flows from the heat exchanger proper into a second compartment. A pump in the pressure chamber draws fluid from the second compartment through an opening in a funnel-shaped member extending transversely through the housing and discharges pressurized fluid into the pressure chamber. An inclined wall extending between the funnel-shaped member and an opposite housing wall separates the first from the second compartment.
