A calender for surface treatment of material webs, wherein in the event of one sided seizure of an intermediate roller the fixed roller not subject to pressure is adjusted in position at one end such that the asymmetrical linear force profile resulting from the seizure is symmetrically adjusted according to the desired condition in order to optimise processing of the material web.

In a wet press for dewatering a web of material, for instance a paper web, a contact pressure device is provided which presses against a rotating roll and exerts an incrementally increasing pressure in the direction of travel of the paper web. The contact pressure device comprises only a single pressure element arranged in the direction of travel of the paper web. The pressure element has two or more pressure pockets arranged sequentially in the direction of web travel and which are connected with a common pressure chamber by conduits. The increasing contact pressure is attained by arranging the pressure element unsymmetrically in relation to the pressure chamber. The effective pressure cross-sectional areas of pressure pockets arranged sequentially in the direction of web travel can additionally be reduced in the direction of web travel or the cross-sections of the associated bores can be increased.

An arrangement containing a controlled deflection roll which is supported by means of support or pressure elements against a roll support or beam. There is also provided a regulation arrangement for regulating the position of the roll shell, wherein the position of the roll shell at least at both of its opposed ends is detected by position sensors or feelers and deviations from a set or reference value are processed into two adjustment or positioning magnitudes which act upon the support or pressure elements. Both of the adjustment magnitudes are formed while taking into account a possible difference between both of the reference value-actual value differences and thereafter weighted and grouped together with further adjustment magnitudes and inputted to the support or pressure elements.

A controlled deflection roll possesses a roll shell which is radially movable in at least one plane in relation to a roll support. Position feelers or sensors are arranged at the ends of the roll shell. These position feelers control regulators operatively associated with pressure or support elements located between the roll support and the roll shell, as a function of deviations from a predetermined reference or set position, in a manner such that the roll shell is maintained in the reference or set position. It is possible to influence the pressure or support elements by the position feelers either equally or unequally, and specifically, with decreasing intensity in the presence of increasing distance from the related position feeler.
