An apparatus for providing an electrically controllable inductor which uses a first and a second magnetic core (20, 24) spaced apart from one another. A DC bias coil (22) is wound on the first magnetic core (20). An inductor coil (26) is wound on both the first magnetic core (20) and the second magnetic core (24). The inductance seen at terminal connections (80, 82) of the inductor coil (26) is variable in dependence upon a magnitude of a flow of direct current through the DC bias coil (22). In one embodiment of the inductor, the first and the second magnetic core (20, 24) are each formed using a pair of U-shaped core segments (30, 32, 60, 62) located adjacent to one another. In this embodiment, the first and second magnetic core (20, 24) are located in an opposing relation to one another, with the DC bias coil (22) wound on inner legs (64, 72) of the first magnetic core (20) and the inductor coil (26) wound on inner legs (64, 72, 34, 44) of both the first and the second magnetic core (20, 24). A system is provided employing the electrically controllable inductor in combination with one or more other components (100).

Electrically controllable inductor

An apparatus for providing an electrically controllable inductor uses a first and a second magnetic core (20, 24) spaced apart from one another. A DC bias coil (22) is wound on the first magnetic core (20). An inductor coil (26) is wound on both the first magnetic core (20) and the second magnetic core (24). The inductance seen at terminal connections (80, 82) of the inductor coil (26) is variable in dependence upon a magnitude of a flow of direct current through the DC bias coil (22). In one embodiment of the inductor, the first and the second magnetic core (20, 24) are each formed using a pair of U-shaped core segments (30, 32, 60, 62) located adjacent to one another. In this embodiment, the first and second magnetic core (20, 24) are located in an opposing relation to one another, with the DC bias coil (22) wound on inner legs (64, 72) of the first magnetic core (20) and the inductor coil (26) wound on inner legs (64, 72, 34, 44) of both the first and the second magnetic core (20, 24). A system employing the electrically controllable inductor is provided for dynamic correction of power factor and reduction of harmonics of a three-phase power line.

Transformer assembly for power supply

A transformer assembly (10) for use as a self-contained auxiliary power supply in complex machine tool applications is disclosed as having a core (16) with a first side (18), a second side (20) and a plurality of coils (21, 22, 23). Attached to the first side (18) of the core (16) is a first hollow housing (30). A second hollow housing (34) is attached to the second side (20) of the core (16). The core (16) has side edges (28) extending between the first and second sides (18, 20) thereof for effective removal and dissipation of heat generated by the transformer assembly (10). A plurality of electrical components (38) are mounted at least partially within one or more of the hollow housings (30, 34) to provide compact accommodation of the electrical components (38) by the transformer assembly (10) so that the latter occupies a minimal volume within a control panel in the complex machine tool. Accordingly, the assembly so described is significantly smaller and less costly than conventional auxiliary power supplies.

Transformer assembly with exposed hollow housings, and multiple coils

An apparatus for dissolving a gas, such as oxygen, into a liquid, such as water, having a low concentration of that gas. The apparatus has an inlet, an outlet and a central region therebetween and has walls defining an interior adapted for dissolving the gas in the liquid. The apparatus also has a gas injecting means adapted for maximizing a gas-liquid interface and promoting contact between the gas and the liquid, thereby maximizing the concentration of the gas in the liquid. The apparatus is useful for modifying the liquid for a specific purpose, such as for developing a culture medium. The apparatus can have different internal configurations, depending on the degree of gas linkage and retention required.

Device for dissolving gasses into liquids

A transformer assembly (10) for use as a self-contained auxiliary power supply in complex machine tool applications is disclosed as having a core (16) with a first side (18) and a second side (20). Attached to the first side (18) of the core (16) is a first hollow housing (30). A second hollow housing (34) is attached to the second side (20) of the core (16). The core (16) has lateral side edges (28) extending between the first and second sides (18, 20) thereof for effective removal and dissipation of heat generated by the transformer assembly (10). A plurality of electrical components (38) are mounted at least partially within one or more of the hollow housings (30, 34) to provide compact accommodation of the electrical components (38) by the transformer assembly (10) so that the latter occupies a minimal volume within a control panel in the complex machine tool. Accordingly, the assembly so described is significantly smaller and less costly than conventional auxiliary power supplies. In one embodiment of the invention, multiple sets of cores (16) are disposed adjacent to each other and have common hollow housings (30, 34) on the first and second sides (18, 20) respectively. This embodiment isolates the output of the respective transformer secondary windings. In another embodiment, two sets of cores (16, 16') are joined by a common hollow housing (34). Additional housings (30) are provided on the distal sides (18, 18') of the cores (16, 16'). This configuration is suitable for use in spaces that are long and narrow and has an enhanced ability to dissipate heat, even when mounted within confined enclosures.

A transformer assembly (10) for use as a self-contained auxiliary power supply in complex machine tool applications is disclosed as having a core (16) with a first side (18) and a second side (20). A high frequency resistance welding system having a pair of jaws which are pivotally mounted together and are adapted to clampingly engage the work to be welded therebetween. Each jaw has two arms and each arm has a welding tip which engages the work. The welding tips on the arms on one jaw register with the welding tips on the arms on the other jaw. A high frequency alternating electric power source is connected to the first jaw so that the direction of current flow in one arm of the first jaw is opposite from the direction of current flow in the other arm of the first jaw so that the magnetic field caused by the current flow through one arm is substantially offset or cancelled by the current flow through the other arm of the first jaw. In addition, each welding arm is preferably L-shaped thus having an elongated shank with the welding tip at one end of the shank. The elongated shanks in each jaw are positioned closely adjacent and parallel to each other while the welding tips in each jaw are spaced apart from each other by an amount greater than the spacing between the shanks.

Transformer

A transformer comprising a core, a primary winding and a secondary winding in which one of the windings, preferably the winding with the least coils, is formed from a tubular member formed in a plurality of coils; in the preferred embodiment of a step down transformer, the secondary winding is formed from a tubular member. A connector block at each end of the secondary winding includes an appropriate fluid passage and means for connecting a fluid coupling to the block so that the inlet and outlet of the fluid circulation system can be secured to the tubular member forming the secondary winding. The loops of the primary coil are interdigitally arranged with the loops of the secondary coil so that the fluid in the secondary coil absorbs heat from both the primary and secondary windings. Each loop of the secondary includes a bow so that adjacent ends of each loop of the primary are sandwiched between the bows. Preferably, the core is made of laminated sections, each laminated section comprising a substantially E-shaped portion, the legs of each E-shaped portion abutting against the legs of the other E-shaped portion in each laminate layer. The primary and secondary coils are wrapped around the center leg of the core.

A transformer system for resistance welding intended for installation on robotic devices comprises an auto transformer having a tap selection switch connected through electrical conductors to an isolation welding transformer located at the end of the robotic arm. The auto transformer is uniquely selected for the maximum efficiency thereof and the optimum reduction in the size of the conductors between the transformers. The isolation welding transformer is also optimally sized due to the reduction permissable by the previous interposition of the auto transformer in the welding system. Moreover, the isolation welding transformer comprises primary and secondary coils formed from tubular members each of which is cooled by a fluid coolant. Utilization of refrigerated coolant permits further reduction in size and mass, and increases electrical efficiency because of the unique design of the isolation welding transformer in which both primary and secondary windings are cooled by such fluid coolant.

A transformer comprising a core, a primary winding and a secondary winding in which one of the windings, preferably the winding with the least coils, is formed from a tubular member formed in a plurality of coils in the preferred embodiment of a step down transformer, the secondary winding is formed from a tubular member. A connector block at each end of the secondary winding includes an appropriate fluid passage and means for connecting a fluid coupling to the block so that the inlet and outlet of the fluid circulation system can be secured to the tubular member forming the secondary winding. The connector blocks also include threaded apertures adapted to receive the bolt for providing an electrical connection to an electrical apparatus such as a welding gun. The loops of the primary coil are interdigitally arranged with the loops of the secondary coil so that the fluid in the secondary coil absorbs heat from both the primary and secondary windings. Preferably, the core is made of laminated sections, each laminated section comprising a substantially E-shaped portion, the legs of each E-shaped portion abutting against the legs of the other E-shaped portion in each laminate layer. The primary and secondary coils are wrapped around the center leg of the core.
