Embodiments of the current disclosure include low moat volume single mode ultra-low loss optical fibers. In some embodiments, a single mode optical fiber includes a first core region; a second core region surrounding and directly adjacent to the first core region, wherein a volume V of the second core region is less than or equal to 14% &#x394;&#x3bc;m; a cladding region surrounding the core region; and wherein the optical fiber has a cable cutoff of less than 1260 nm, a mode field diameter at 1310 nm of 8.6 microns to 9.7 microns, a mode field diameter at 1550 nm of 9.9 microns to 11 microns, and an attenuation at 1550 nm of less than or equal to 0.17 dB/km.

Low moat volume single mode ultra-low loss fiber

The present disclosure provides optical fibers that exhibit low macrobend loss at 1550 nm at bend diameters greater than 40 mm. The relative refractive index profile of the fibers includes a trench cladding region having a trench volume configured to minimize macrobend loss at large bend diameters. The thickness and/or depth of the trench cladding region are controlled to reduce trench volume to a degree consistent with reducing macrobend loss at bend diameters greater than 40 mm. The optical fiber includes an outer cladding region that surrounds and is directly adjacent to the trench cladding region and an optional offset cladding region between the trench cladding region and the core region. In some embodiments, the core region is a segmented core region that includes inner and outer core regions. The low macrobend loss available from the optical fibers makes them particularly suitable for applications in submarine telecommunications systems.

Optical fiber with low macrobend loss at large bend diameter

An optical fiber includes a central glass core region comprising maximum refractive index delta percent &#x394;, a first inner annular region surrounding said core comprising refractive index delta percent &#x394;, a depressed annular region surrounding said inner annular region and comprising &#x394;and a third annular region surrounding the depressed annular region comprising refractive index delta percent &#x394;; wherein the third annular region comprises chlorine an amount greater than 0.2 weight percent in a region which is within 5 microns from the depressed annular region, wherein &#x394;&#x3e;&#x394;&#x3e;&#x394;&#x3e;&#x394;. The difference between &#x394;and &#x394;is greater than 0.01 and profile volume, |V| is at least 50% &#x394;&#x3bc;m.

Low bend loss optical fiber

A dispersion compensating optical fiber that includes a segmented core having a central core segment, a moat segment, and a ring segment wherein the ring segment is preferably offset from the moat outer radius, r, by a ring offset, X, greater than 0.4 &#x3bc;m. The refractive index profile is selected to provide a total dispersion at 1550 nm of between about &#x2212;120 and &#x2212;145 ps/nm/km, and a total dispersion slope at 1550 nm of between about &#x2212;0.36 and &#x2212;0.56 ps/nm/km. The refractive index profile is preferably further selected to provide a kappa, defined as the total dispersion at 1550 nm divided by the dispersion slope at 1550 nm, of between about 250 and 320 nm. Optical transmission systems including the present invention dispersion compensating optical fiber which have residual dispersion less than +/&#x2212;15 ps/nm per 100 km of standard single mode transmission fiber are also disclosed.

The present invention relates to a dispersion compensating optical fiber (&ldquo;DC fiber&rdquo;) having a segmented core of at least three segments and having a negative total dispersion and negative dispersion slope in the L-band. The index profile of the segmented core is selected to provide an optical fiber having properties suitable for a high performance communication system operating in the L-band wavelength band, i.e., between about 1570 nm to 1620 nm. The DC fiber according to the invention exhibits total dispersion at 1595 nm of between &minus;70 and &minus;225 ps/km/nm and dispersion slope more negative than &minus;0.7 ps/km/nm . The DC fiber may be optically connected to a non-zero dispersion shifted fiber in the system to compensate for dispersion and dispersion slope thereof.

L-band dispersion compensating fiber and transmission system including same

The present invention relates to a dispersion compensating optical fiber (&ldquo;DC fiber&rdquo;) having a segmented core and having a negative total dispersion and negative dispersion slope in the C-band. The index profile of the fiber is selected to provide an optical properties suitable for a high performance communication system operating in the C-band wavelength band, i.e., between about 1525 nm to 1565 nm. The DC fiber according to the invention exhibits dispersion slope at 1549 nm more negative than &minus;3.4 ps/nM -km and has a negative &Dgr; % that is more negative than &minus;0.4%. Preferably, the DC fiber has a total dispersion more negative than &minus;125 ps/nm -km. The DC fiber may be optically connected to a Non-Zero Dispersion Shifted Fiber (NZDSF) in the system to compensate for dispersion thereof. Optionally, the transmission system may include a positive dispersion, positive slope trim fiber.

Highly negative-slope dispersion compensating fiber and transmission system including same

A dispersion compensating (DC) fiber preferably including a central segment having a relative refractive index, a depressed moat segment, an intermediate segment, an annular ring segment and a cladding layer. The relative refractive index profile of the DC fiber is selected to provide negative dispersion, negative dispersion slope, a &kgr; value of less than or equal to about 100, and MPI of less than &minus;40 dB at 1550 nm. The DC fiber preferably has a pin array bend loss of less than or equal to about 30 dB at a wavelength of about 1550 nm.
