Core configuration transformers and methods of making same. A core configuration transformer includes a transforming optical fiber having plurality of routing cores embedded therein. The transforming optical fiber includes a first end face and a second end face. The plurality of routing cores is configured to define a first end face core pattern at the first end face of the transforming optical fiber, and a second end face core pattern at the second end face of the transforming optical fiber that has one or both of a different arrangement of cores or a different polarity of cores.

Fiber optic terminals, tools and methods for adjusting a split ratio of a fiber optic terminal are disclosed. In one embodiment, a tool for adjusting a split ratio of a fiber optic terminal includes an axle for insertion into a port of the fiber optic terminal, and a terminal engagement body disposed about the axle. An illuming device for use in medically illuminating tissue of interest within a patient generally includes a light diffusing optical fiber and an at least partially optically opaque sheath that is mounted over the fiber for selective, sliding movement along the length thereof. By sliding the sheath relative to the optical fiber after it has been inserted into a patient to illuminate a particular area of tissue, the length, size, and/or shape of the light that is exposed to the tissue can be selectively controlled. Such in situ variation of the properties of the exposed light permit use of a single instrument and a single procedure regardless of variation in the size and shape of the diseased tissue being medically treated.

Fiber lighting systems and methods of switching light are disclosed. A system includes a light source and a switching device having an input that receives light from the light source, at least one output, and a microelectromechanical mirror disposed in an optical pathway between the input and the output. The mirror is repositionable to direct light from the input into the output. The system also includes a light diffusing fiber coupled to the output that emits light along its length and an electronic control unit that directs the light source to pulse the light at a frequency of 10 Hz-500 kHz and orient the mirror for directing the light to an output. The repositioning is synchronized with the pulsing such that the mirror is at a coupled orientation during a pulse and is repositioned between pulses.

In one embodiment, an optical connector includes a housing with a first end having an open aperture and a second end having a blind aperture. A chamber is disposed in the housing such that the optical axis of the housing passes through the chamber. The chamber includes a first material. A light collecting region formed from a second material is disposed in the housing between the second end of the housing and the chamber. A blind aperture is positioned in the light collecting region such that a termination of the blind aperture is spaced apart from the chamber by at least a portion of the second material. A refracting surface is disposed in the housing between the open aperture and the light collecting region such that the optical axis of the housing passes through the refracting surface.

The operation of the determined optical componentsorare adjusted to enable the optical nodeto operate in accordance with the defined set of operating conditions. An optical performance monitor is also provided for use with the method and apparatus.

Monitoring and controlling optical nodes

The hyperspectral detector systems and methods disclosed herein include capturing a context image and a single-column spectral image that falls within the context image. The context and spectral images are then combined to form a fused image. Using the fused image, the spectral image is panned over the scene and within the context image to capture spectral signatures within the scene. The spectral signatures are compared to reference spectral signatures, and the locations of the one or more spectral signatures within the context image are marked. The systems and methods obviate the need to store and process large amounts of spectral data and allow for real-time display of the fused context image and spectral image, along with the marked locations of matched spectral signatures.

A light source package is disclosed for a Raman amplifier node having a primary optical fiber for carrying an optical signal and a secondary optical fiber for carrying the optical signal when the signal is rerouted from the primary optical fiber. The light source package includes a primary light source for emitting light into the primary optical fiber when the optical signal is carried by the primary optical fiber to induce Raman gain of the optical signal, and a secondary light source for emitting light into the secondary optical fiber when the optical signal is carried by the secondary optical fiber to induce Raman gain of the optical signal.

A reconfigurable optical device including input and output ports, and add or drop ports, has a high degree of flexibility such that any wavelength channel from any optical signal introduced through the add ports may be added to any of the optical signals transmitted through the output ports. In addition, any wavelength channel from any optical signal received through the inputs ports may be dropped through any of the drop ports. Furthermore, the optical device is configurable to allow the same wavelength channel from two different optical signals supplied respectively through any two inputs ports to be simultaneously directed to two different drop ports.

Using a beam steering device that is rotatable about two orthogonal axes, wavelength components of different channels are scanned onto the light detector in accordance with programmable parameters. The programmable parameters specify the light detector to which the wavelength components are directed, the order the wavelength components are monitored by the light detector, and the time duration over which each of the wavelength components is monitored by the light detector.

A tunable dispersion compensator (TDC) is tuned from a first dispersion setpoint to a second dispersion setpoint while maintaining continuity of the dispersion. The dispersion tuning follows a pre-determined trajectory in the time domain, so that continuity of the optical dispersion across the channel optical bandwidth is maintained while minimizing all other TDC-induced optical impairments during a tuning period.
