Systems and methods for instituting redistribution of wireless clients to improve service, comprising via access point (AP), multiple APs acting in concert, and/or a central entity, in connection with a network, allowing a client to associate; deciding that an associated client should be redistributed based on a connection metric, wherein the decision is based on at least one of, a probability calculation, network metric and a threshold comparison; and via the AP, sending the associated client a trigger, wherein the trigger is at least one of, a redistribution request and a disconnect message.

Distribution of clients across a network

An electronic device that dynamically adjusts a number of antennas used during transmitting and/or a transmit polarization state is described. This electronic device may include: a first set of antennas; and a second set of antennas, where a given first antenna in the first set of antennas has a first predefined polarization and a given second antenna in the second set of antennas has a second predefined polarization. During operation, the electronic device may dynamically adjust, based at least in part on a transmit power and a regulatory constraint: the number of antennas in the first set of antennas and the second set of antennas used during transmitting; and/or the transmit polarization state by selecting antennas in the first set of antennas and the second set of antennas.

Regulatory-constraint-based adaptation of transmit polarization

During operation, an electronic device may obtain feedback associated with communication performance between the electronic device and a second electronic device, where the feedback includes one or more features including: a channel frequency response, a compressed beamforming report, an error vector magnitude and/or a relationship between at least two of the features. Then, based at least in part on the feedback, the electronic device may dynamically adjust a transmit polarization state and/or a receive polarization state by selecting antennas in a first set of antennas and a second set of antennas in the electronic device, where a given first antenna in the first set of antennas has a first predefined polarization and a given second antenna in the second set of antennas has a second predefined polarization, and the second predefined polarization is different from the first predefined polarization.

Performance-based adaptation of communication polarization

An electronic device (such as an access point) is described. During operation, the electronic device may create a hidden transmitted BSS. For example, the hidden transmitted BSS may be hidden, e.g., from an operator of a network that includes the electronic device and/or from one or more second electronic devices. Moreover, the electronic device may transmit a multi-BSS beacon with a transmitted BSSID and a wild-card SSID (or blank character string) of the hidden transmitted BSS, and, for one or more non-transmitted BSSes, one or more non-transmitted BSSIDs and their associated SSIDs. Then, the electronic device may establish one or more connections with the one or more second electronic devices via the one or more non-transmitted BSSes. Furthermore, the electronic device may deactivate a given non-transmitted BSS in the one or more non-transmitted BSSes without impacting a remainder of the non-transmitted BSSes.

Automated establishing of a hidden transmitted basic service set

An access point that provides a transition recommendation is described. This access point may provide a first WLAN having a first capability. During operation, the access point may associate with the electronic device. Moreover, the access point may determine that the electronic device has a second capability that is different from the first capability. For example, the first capability may include compatibility with a first IEEE 802.11 standard and the second capability may include compatibility with a second IEEE 802.11 standard. Next, the access point may provide the transition recommendation addressed to the electronic device based at least in part on the difference in the first capability and the second capability, where the transition recommendation recommends that the electronic device transition from the first WLAN to a second WLAN that has the second capability.

WLAN steering based on capabilities

Methods for an electronic device to communicate in a wireless local area network are provided in which information bits are encoded at the electronic device to provide a plurality of encoded bits. A first radio of the electronic device is used to transmit a first subset of the encoded bits over a first channel that is within a first frequency band, where the first subset of the encoded bits comprises less than all of the encoded bits. A second radio of the electronic device is used to transmit a second subset of the encoded bits over a second channel that is within a second frequency band.

Methods for performing multi-link hybrid automatic repeat request in wireless local area networks and related electronic devices

An access point that determines communication boundaries is described. During operation, the access point may receive one or more probe requests associated with the one or more electronic devices, where a given probe request may include an identifier of a given electronic device. Moreover, when the access point receives the given probe request, the access point may determine a signal strength associated with the given probe request and timestamps when the given probe request was received. Then, the access point may exchange probe-request information with one or more additional access points, where the probe-request information corresponds to received probe requests. Next, the access point may compare the probe-request information to determine the communication boundaries. For example, the communication boundaries may be determined by comparing the probe-request information for pairs of access points. Furthermore, the access point may identify neighboring access points based at least in part on the probe-request information.

Discovery of a network topology from a client perspective

An electronic device may receive multiple uplink packets or frames associated with a second electronic device. Then, based at least in part on information included in or associated with the group, the electronic device may unilaterally calculate the QoS of the multiple uplink packets or frames. Moreover, the electronic device may provide the multiple uplink packets of frames to a third electronic device. Next, the electronic device may receive multiple downlink packets or frames associated with the third electronic device. Furthermore, the electronic device may provide the multiple downlink packets or frames to the second electronic device, where additional multiple uplink packets or frames and/or the multiple downlink packets or frames have a priority corresponding to the calculated QoS.

Unilateral quality-of-service mirroring

An electronic device that coordinates collection of communication data in a wireless network is described. During operation, the electronic device may provide, from an interface circuit, a troubleshooting request, where the troubleshooting request instructs at least a second electronic device (such as an access point) in the one or more second electronic devices to capture the communication data associated with subsequent communication by the electronic device. For example, the troubleshooting request may be included in a vendor specific public action frame that is broadcast or unicast. Then, the electronic device may provide, from the interface circuit, one or more packets or frames. Moreover, the electronic device may collect the communication data associated with the subsequent communication.

Request for synchronized packet and analytics capture

In order to maintain performance during wireless communication, a transmitting electronic device may selectively perform a remedial action based on a received power in a channel during time intervals between received packets (e.g., due to interference) and/or a metric associated with the measured received power. In particular, when the received power is less than a threshold value (e.g., when the interference is insufficient to stop transmission by the transmitting electronic device), the transmitting electronic device performs the remedial action based on the measured received power and/or the metric. For example, the remedial action may include: selecting a modulation technique; selecting the receiving electronic device; selecting an antenna pattern for the one or more antennas; reducing a transmit power; selecting a data rate; determining a cumulative distribution function; and/or estimating a channel capacity. Next, the transmitting electronic device transmits a packet in the channel to a receiving electronic device.

Remedial action based on inter-packet received power

An electronic device may advertise a first BSSID and a second BSSID having a common SSID, separate wireless connection interfaces, and different capabilities, where the first BSSID may support a first IEEE 802.11 standard, and the second BSSID may support one or more previous IEEE 802.11 standards, but may not support the first IEEE 802.11 standard. Then, the electronic device may receive a probe request associated with a second electronic device. Moreover, the electronic device may determine whether the second electronic device supports the first IEEE 802.11 standard based at least in part on one or more fields in the probe request. Next, the electronic device may selectively provide a probe response to the second electronic device with one of the first BSSID and the second BSSID based at least in part on the determination.
