A variable hue task lamp with novel hue selection component is disclosed herein. The color and intensity of a task lamp is adjusted using a wireless connection from a device such as a smart phone, tablet, or computing device based upon an optimization method using a sample text or scene. The user first optimizes hue by adjusting the background color of the sample text or picture on the device. The optimum hue is then communicated to the task light, which sets light emitting diode intensities to match the optimum choice. Presets further localize choices in color space, and a comparison to white verifies the benefits of the chosen hue.

Apparatus and techniques are described herein for providing a battery plate assembly including a silicon current collector. The silicon current collector can include apertures. A lead layer or lead alloy layer can be formed on the silicon current collector. A monopolar battery assembly can be provided, such as including monopolar battery plate assemblies comprising silicon current collectors. The silicon can include a conductive metallurgical grade silicon, such as cast and cut to provide individual current collector substrates.

Apparatus and techniques are described herein for providing a bipolar battery plate such as can be included as a portion of an energy storage device assembly, such as a battery. The bipolar battery plate can include a silicon substrate. A first metal layer can be deposited on a first surface of the rigid silicon substrate, and a different second metal layer can be deposited on a second surface of the rigid silicon substrate opposite the first surface. The first and second metal layers can be annealed to form a first silicide on the first surface and a different second silicide on the second surface of the rigid silicon substrate.

Described herein are hands-free vision aids that may be used for low-vision reading. These vision aids may be beneficial for individuals with low-vision disorders such as age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and other visual disorders. The vision aids described here comprise an optical system with one or more light sources configured to provide a rectangular field of illumination with high illuminance levels bounded by high contrast perimeter. Such an illumination field greatly illuminates a targeted viewing region while reducing glare that arises from illuminating peripheral regions. Some vision aids use green light with high illuminance values for improving visual acuity and comfort for long-duration reading. The optical system of a vision aid may be configured to fit onto and/or integrate with eyeglass frames.

Battery and assembly method

A simplified manufacturing process and the resultant bifacial solar cell (BSC) are provided, the simplified manufacturing process reducing manufacturing costs. The BSC includes an active region located on the front surface of the substrate, formed for example by a phosphorous diffusion step. The back surface includes a doped region, the doped region having the same conductivity as the substrate but with a higher doping level. Contact grids are formed, for example by screen printing. Front junction isolation is accomplished using a laser scribe.

The present invention relates to methods and apparatuses for providing a buried insulator isolation for solar cell contacts. According to certain aspects, the invention places a buried oxide under the emitter of a polysilicon emitter solar cell. The oxide provides an excellent passivation layer over most of the surface. Holes in the oxide provide contact areas, increasing the current density to enhance efficiency. The oxide isolates the contacts from the substrate, achieving the advantage of a selective emitter structure without requiring deep diffusions. The oxide further enables use of screen printing on advanced shallow emitter cells. Positioning of the grid lines close to the openings also enables use of a very thin emitter to maximize blue response.

The present invention generally provides a batch substrate processing system, or cluster tool, for in-situ processing of a film stack used to form regions of a solar cell device. In one configuration, the film stack formed on each of the substrates in the batch contains one or more silicon-containing layers and one or more metal layers that are deposited and further processed within the various chambers contained in the substrate processing system. In one embodiment, a batch of solar cell substrates is simultaneously transferred in a vacuum or inert environment to prevent contamination from affecting the solar cell formation process.

A simplified manufacturing process and the resultant bifacial solar cell (BSC) are provided, the simplified manufacturing process reducing manufacturing costs. The BSC includes an active region located on the front surface of the substrate, formed for example by a phosphorous diffusion step. After removing the PSG, assuming phosphorous diffusion, and isolating the front junction, dielectric layers are deposited on the front and back surfaces. Contact grids are formed, for example by screen printing. Prior to depositing the back surface dielectric, a metal grid may be applied to the back surface, the back surface contact grid registered to, and alloyed to, the metal grid during contact firing.

An apparatus with a plurality of load-lock chambers stacked having independently controlled pressures within their interior regions is provided. According to one or more embodiments, each load-lock chamber includes a pump valve connected to a pump line and a vent valve connected to a vent line to independently control the changes of pressure within the interior regions of the chambers. Methods for conveying substrates held within these chambers from the apparatus to one or more processing chambers, which may be in-line, are also provided.
