A method for powering a system in a vehicle, the method including the steps of mechanically coupling, driving and controlling. The mechanically coupling step includes coupling a power unit with at least one primary load, the at least one primary load including a propulsion load. The driving step includes driving a cleaning fan and a cleaning shoe with at least one power source, the at least one power source being mechanically independent from the power unit. The controlling step includes controlling a speed of the at least one power source independent of a speed of the power unit.

A method and system for boosting a torque output of a drive train comprises an engine speed detector for detecting an engine speed of an engine having a baseline torque versus engine speed curve. A data processor determines if the detected engine speed is within a first range of engine speeds, if the detected engine speed is within the first range, the electric motor is activated to rotate substantially synchronously with the engine speed within the first range in an electric propulsion mode in accordance with a supplemental torque versus engine speed curve. The supplemental torque versus engine speed curve intercepts the baseline torque versus engine speed curve at a lower engine speed point and a higher engine speed point.

System and method for boosting torque output of a drive train

A method and system for boosting a torque output of a drive train comprises a torque sensor for detecting an engine torque of an engine having a baseline torque versus engine speed curve. A data processor determines if the detected engine torque is within a first torque range, if the detected engine torque is within the first range, the electric motor is activated to rotate substantially synchronously with a corresponding engine speed associated with the detected engine torque in accordance with a supplemental torque versus engine speed curve. The supplemental torque versus engine speed curve intercepts the baseline torque versus engine speed curve at a first lower speed point and a first higher speed point.

A vehicle includes a power unit mechanically couplable with one or more primary loads, including a propulsion load. At least one electrical storage device has an electrical output which is couplable with at least one external load over a drive period of time. Each external load is distinct from the one or more primary loads. A generator is mechanically couplable with the power unit and electrically couplable with the at least one electrical storage device. The generator has an electrical charging output to the at least one electrical storage device. At least one electrical processing circuit is configured for selectively coupling the at least one electrical storage device with one or more external loads. The at least one electrical processing circuit is also configured for selectively coupling the generator with the at least one electrical storage device over a charging period of time. The charging output and the charging period of time are dependent upon the electrical output from the at least one electrical storage device and the drive period of time.

Vehicle with electric hybrid powering of external loads and engine-off capability

An engine speed detector detects an engine speed of an engine having a baseline torque versus engine speed curve. A torque sensor detects an engine torque of the engine. A data processor determines if the detected engine speed is within a first speed range and if the detected engine torque is within a first torque range. A motor controller activates an electric motor to rotate substantially synchronously with a corresponding engine speed associated with the detected engine torque in an electric propulsion mode in accordance with a supplemental torque versus engine speed curve if the detected engine speed is within the first speed range and if the detected engine torque is within the first torque range. The supplemental torque versus engine speed curve intercepts the baseline torque versus engine speed curve at a lower speed point and a higher speed point.

A container for storing hydrogen comprises an outer shell having an inlet for inputting hydrogen gas and an outlet for outputting hydrogen gas. A thermally conductive liner lines an interior of the outer shell. An inner hydride core is in communication with the inlet and the outlet for storing the hydrogen gas. Coolant lines are in thermal communication with the storage container. A thermal management controller determines whether the container is in a dispensing mode or a refueling mode. If the container is in the dispensing mode, the coolant lines may be routed to a first heat exchanger that is in thermal communication with a propulsion unit of a vehicle. However, if the container is in the refueling mode, the coolant lines may be routed to a second heat exchanger associated with a temperature that is less than or equal to the ambient temperature outside of the vehicle.

Storage container associated with a thermal energy management system

A container for storing hydrogen comprises an outer shell having an inlet for inputting hydrogen gas and an outlet for outputting hydrogen gas. A thermally conductive liner which is a carbon foam coating lines the interior of the outer shell. An inner hydride core is in communication with the inlet and outlet for storing the hydrogen gas.

Hydrogen storage container

A cooling system is connected to a fuel cell stack which has a hydrogen inlet, an air inlet, a coolant inlet, a coolant outlet and an exhaust water outlet. The cooling system includes a heat exchange unit coupled to the coolant inlet and the coolant outlet, a coolant pump, and a blower for blowing air through the unit. An evaporator is exposed to the blown air, and a conduit communicates exhaust water from the exhaust water outlet to the evaporator. The exhaust water evaporates in and cools the blown air. The evaporator may be a wick mounted on an exterior surface of the heat exchange unit. The evaporator unit may include water injectors which spray exhaust water into the blown air. The injectors are mounted between a blower and a radiator. A removable porous evaporator element is mounted between the injectors and the radiator.
