The present invention comprises four principal elements: (1) a telephone instrument; (2) a computer; (3) an automatic dialer; and (4) a telephone line. These elements allow for automatic dialing of local and long distance calls in the United States, as well as automatic dialing of international calls. The automatic dialing feature is accomplished, in part, by implementing a computerized data base grouped in N-files. These files may be searched by the computer system during and after the caller dials a number. If the dialed number matches one of the numbers in the files, the system may automatically out-dial the dialed number. The present invention also relates to a system for automatically selecting, preparing and entering supplemental information to information entered to completed or change an alphabetic, alphanumeric or numeric address.

A communications distribution system is disclosed for facilitating the handling of telephone calls within a plurality of groups. Each of the groups includes a line group and a channel group interconnected by an anticipatory call distributor (ANCD) for determining the availability of channels for connecting to a line from the associated line group, and for reassigning channels to other groups as long as a certain minimum capacity is maintained in each group. The ANCD also anticipates whether any channels are expected to become available within a predetermined period. In response to channel availability, or to a channel that is expected to become available, a priority and availability logic sets an appropriate status register, which is checked by switching command logic. The switching command logic periodically checks the status of the bits in the status register and determines, based upon a priority ranking, whether any channel is available or will become available to answer a phone call, and if so, which channel will be used.

Anticipatory call distributor

A rotary turbine employs rotors that are rotated primarily by the frictional forces of a pressurized medium flowing through a gap that separates the rotors from the stationary housing. The rotors are coupled to a source of pressurized medium that creates a medium flow through the gap. The frictional forces between the flowing medium and the rotors create a torque that rotates the rotors. A compressor is formed of a rotor assembly that includes first and second counter-rotating rotors having substantially smooth surfaces. The rotors are separated by a gap that allows the medium to flow therethrough, with the surface of at least one of the rotors contacting the medium, such that the flow of the medium through the gap is induced by surface friction between the contact surface and the medium.

A system which presents a user with a sequence of prompt messages and stores user responses to at least selected ones of these prompt messages, classifies the stored user responses in a first category when the user responds to a first one of the prompt messages and not to a second one of the prompt messages, and classifies the stored user reponses in a second category when the user responds to both the first and second prompt messages. In addition, this system classifies the stored user response in a third category when the response includes any one of a plurality of code words, and in a fourth category when the user response includes none of these code words. An alternate embodiment classifies stored user responses in accordance with the duration of the response to a selected prompt message. The described classification techniques materially enhance transcription efficiency.

A message retrieval system is disclosed which includes a plurality of answering machines, each connected to respected telephone line. Each answering machine records telephone responses on a respective message memory unit and all message memory units are connected to a single message processor. The message processor is in turn connected to a number of retrieval consoles used by operators to transcribe messages from the message memory units. The message processor operates (1) to automatically switch the mode of a headset included in the retrieval console between a transcription mode and a dialog mode to allow an operator either to transcribe messages or to conduct live telephone conversations via the same headset; (2) to allow a console to place a commanded message memory unit on hold while live telephone conversations are being conducted; (3) to disconnect a commanded message memory unit from a console in the event the console fails to command the message memory unit within a predetermined time; (4) to take positive action in the event recorded messages on one of the message memory units age excessively prior to transcription; and (5) to prevent a single operator closure of a switch or footpedal on the retrieval console from causing more than a preselected amount of transcription or rewinding of the message memory unit.

Overflow calls intended for a telephone answering center are automatically diverted to an overflow center which automatically answers the overflow calls and records information acquired from the overflow calls. This recorded information is digitally encoded and then transmitted back from the overflow station to the telephone answering center, where it is received and used to allow operators at the telephone answering center to place callbacks, or to take other appropriate action.

A programmed conversation recording system presents a caller with a sequence of messages and records caller responses to these messages during respective calling periods. According to this invention, pauses in the caller response are automatically detected and timed and a patience interval is provided which varies in real time during the recording period as a function of the duration of the caller response. The recording period is automatically terminated when the duration of a pause in the caller response exceeds the patience interval. By varying the patience interval in real time during the recording period, the recording system can be programmed to respond properly, even to responses to complex questions.
