A detection method and system that detects reflection from a scene in at least a portion of an upper band of the near infrared spectrum (e.g., at least a portion within the range of 1.4 &mgr;m and above in the near infrared spectrum). The presence of a human body in the scene is then determined by comparing the reflection of at least one region of the scene (e.g., at least one region of the scene including a face region of the human body) to at least one other region of the scene (e.g., at least another region of the scene including one or more inanimate objects).

Near-IR human detector

Detection of a person disguised with one or more artificial materials includes detecting reflection from at least one portion of a head of a human body in at least a portion of an upper band of the near infrared spectrum. The presence of an artificial material associated with the head of the human body is determined based on the detected reflection.

Near-infrared disguise detection

An infrared detector having two cameras for viewing a scene to detect humans. The cameras focus the scene on their respective pixel arrays. One array is designed with a filter to be sensitive to light from 0.8 to 1.4 microns and the array of the other camera is designed with a filter to be sensitive from 1.4 microns to 2.2 microns. The arrays are co-registered spacially and temporally relative to the viewed scene and pixel transmission dynamics. The spectral powers of the pixels from both arrays are difference weighted and fused into one set of pixels. The fused pixels are thresholded into another set of pixels that have one of two values&mdash;black or white. These pixels are entered into a visual display that shows a segment image of a human if in the viewed scene.

An image sensor attached to an aircraft generates an image. The image includes a runway and other objects. The edges within the image are detected and Nav Data is used to predict the coordinates defining the runway. The predicted coordinates and the detected edges are correlated to determine the location of the runway within the image. The location of the runway within the image is then used to determine the lateral and vertical deviation of the aircraft relative to the runway.

A multi-band high-speed videometric head tracking system having a gradient reflector array attached to a helmet on a person's head, ultraviolet light source emitting light which is reflected by the reflector array to a video camera which provides an image to a spot location estimator providing accurate locations of spots in the image representing the reflectors' reflecting light to image location accuracies within a pixel of the image. The location information from the spot location estimator goes to a track point 3-D location and helmet LOS estimator that provides location and orientation information to a Kalman Filter that accurately estimates and predicts the helmet position at faster rates than would be possible for a process that uses just the image-based measurements of the helmet.
