A system and method to detect a foreign object proximate to a source resonator that is part of a wireless energy transfer system. The wireless energy transfer system may be one used to wirelessly charge the batteries of an electric vehicle. Data from a visible light camera and a multiple zone temperature sensor are combined or fused to determine whether a foreign object, such a metallic object or an animal, is in the vicinity of, or in close proximity to, a source resonator. The system controls an electric current provided to the source resonator based on whether a foreign object is detected to reduce or inhibit energy emitted by the source resonator. The visible light camera may be a monochrome or color camera and the temperature sensor may be an infrared camera or a thermopile array.

Foreign object detection system and method suitable for source resonator of wireless energy transfer system

A lighting device is generally illustrated including a light body having forward facing light sources including a visible white light source, visible colored light source and an infrared light source. Additionally, a side facing light source is provided. The light body also includes switches for activating the visible light sources and a three-position switch for activating the IR light source and the side facing light source. The lighting device further includes boost circuitry for controlling electrical energy supplied to a light source.

Inductive battery systems and methods of operation

A system to align a vehicle in a parking location includes a plurality of heat generating devices, such as infrared LEDs, arranged in a surface of the parking location to produce a distinctive thermal pattern. A multiple zone temperature sensor is mounted to view the heat generating devices and is configured to output thermal data for each of the zones. A controller is configured to receive the thermal data and determine a thermal map of the plurality of heat generating devices. A display provides a graphic indication of the thermal map and a thermal alignment target. The system may be used to align a vehicle having a capture resonator of a wireless power transfer system to a parking location having a source resonator of a wireless power transfer system.

A lighting system () is provided that includes at least one lighting device (A,B,C), a plurality of external power sources () and an internal power source () applying a first electrical current to illuminate at least one lighting source (A,B,C), wherein the internal power source () supplies the first electrical current. Further, a fuel gauging system and method () detects an electrochemical composition of a power source (), which can be at least one of the internal power source () and the external power source (), and then determines a state of charge of the power source () based upon the determined electrochemical composition of the power source ().

An auxiliary power supply () includes an auxiliary battery (), power supply circuitry (), and a connector (). The power supply circuitry () supplies an output which provides electrical energy for powering the electrical circuitry () of a battery powered device () and for recharging a battery () associated therewith. In one embodiment, the power supply circuitry () supplies an output current which is a function of the charge state of the auxiliary battery () and a load current presented by the electrical circuitry ().

A battery charger () includes a base () which selectively receives first () and second () battery pods. The battery pods (), which are adapted to receive one or more batteries () for charging, have a form factor which facilitates the handling of the pods () and the batteries () received therein. Charging energy may be allocated between the pods () as a function of the temporal sequence in which the pods () are received by the base (). Charging energy may also be allocated among the batteries () so that the batteries () are substantially charged at about the same time.

Battery charger

An appliance, such as a flashlight, accepts first and second batteries. The appliance also includes an electrical load, such as a light source. A first circuit, such as a DC to DC converter, receives power from the first battery and supplies power to the load. A second circuit, such as a DC to DC converter, receives power from the second battery and supplies electrical power to the load. In one embodiment, the appliance accepts batteries having multiple physical sizes.

A method for determining an end of life of a battery includes determining a discharge capacity of the battery at a given moment in time, determining a discharge capacity at a functional endpoint of the battery, and determining a fuel remaining in the battery at the given moment in time as a function of both the discharge capacity at the given moment in time and the discharge capacity of the battery at the functional endpoint of the battery. The determined fuel remaining is indicative of an end of life of the battery.

The light body and platform member may be swivelly moved relative to the base member by forcing the light body and platform member away from the base member and rotating the same. Also disclosed is boost circuitry, battery chemistry detection and control modes.

A lighting device includes a first lighting source, a second lighting source, and a controller. The first lighting source yields a first illumination pattern. The second lighting source yields a second illumination pattern. The patterns overlay to yield a third illumination pattern. The controller shifts available power between the first lighting source and the second lighting source.

An apparatus includes a light source, a substrate, a temperature-based controller and an insulator. The light source is mounted to the substrate. The temperature-based controller is electrically coupled to the light source and causes the light source to provide a relatively constant light output. The insulator is positioned proximate the temperature based controller.
