The high-power radiator includes a discharge space (12) bounded by a metal electrode (8), cooled on one side, and a dielectric (9) and filled with a noble gas or gas mixture, both the dielectric (9) and also the other electrode situated on the surface of the dielectric facing away from the discharge space (12) being transparent for the radiation generated by quiet electric discharges. In this manner, a large-area UV radiator with high efficiency is created which can be operated at high electrical power densities of up to 50 kW/m.sup.2 of active electrode surface.

High-power radiator

The high-power radiator comprises a discharge space (12) bounded by a metal electrode (8), cooled on one side, and a dielectric (9). The discharge space (12) is filled with a noble gas or gas mixture. Both the dielectric (9) and the other electrode situated on the surface of the dielectric (9) facing away from the discharge space (12) are transparent for the radiation generated by quiet electric discharges. In this manner, a large-area UV radiator with high efficiency is created which can be operated at high electrical power densities of up to 50 kW/m.sup.2 of active electrode surface.

A device and process for the generation of ozone using an ozone generator having two electrodes connected across the secondary winding of a high voltage transformer, the primary winding of which is connected to a converter which supplies thereto a square wave current of variable amplitude and variable frequency. A compensation coil is connected across either the primary winding or the secondary winding of the transformer. The ozone generator includes a solid dielectric and a gas path between its two electrodes. The inductance of the compensating choke and the operating frequency of the converter are selected such that the resonance frequency of the resonant circuit formed by the ozone generator and the compensation choke lies below the operating frequency of the converter current supply in any operating condition. In this way the degree of utilization of medium voltage converters of converter-fed ozone generators is significantly increased by connecting a compensation choke (6) in parallel to the ozone generator (5) and by dimensioning it suitably.

Device for the generation of ozone and a process for its operation

An ozone-generating element is disclosed which has a tube ozonizer (1), consisting essentially of an outer metal tube (3) forming one electrode, and of a glass tube (4) which is located coaxially therein and is spaced from it and the inner surface of which is provided with an electrically conductive layer (5) serving as the other electrode. Ozone is formed by pulse discharges with a passive, plate-like spark gap (12) with a defined response voltage serving as a switching element. The tube ozonizer (1) is fed by a low-frequency current source (7) via a high-voltage transformer (9), to the secondary winding (10) of which a storage capacitor (11) is connected. A series of embodiments is proposed, and in these part or all the constructional elements of the critical pulse circuit form a constructional unit with, or integrated into, the tube ozonizer (1). In this way, it is possible to produce pulse circuits of extremely low inductance which lead to up to a doubling of the total efficiency of ozone generation. By means of the highest integration stage which is considered especially advantageous, it becomes possible to convert conventional ozone generators fed with alternating current to pulse operation, without having to carry out expensive conversion and adaptation work, especially in terms of circuitry.
