A control system for a fuel-fired appliance and methods of operating are disclosed. In an illustrative embodiment, when an electrical characteristic of an optical detector, such as a resistance, does not change by at least a predetermined amount during an ignition trial, and/or when a level of EMI or electrical noise detected by an antenna in a burner assembly of the fuel-fired appliance does not increase during the ignition trial, the control system may determine that the ignition assembly is not sparking properly. In some instances, the control system may also be programmed to activate an indicator that would indicate to a user or technician a potential problem with the ignition assembly (e.g. not sparking properly to ignite fuel).

A junction box is operable with a gas valve and includes an enclosure having one or more mechanical coupling features arranged to interface with one or more mating features of the gas valve. An electrical terminal strip is disposed within the enclosure and a quick-disconnect electrical connector is disposed on a surface of the enclosure. The quick-disconnect electrical connector is coupled to a mating connector of the gas valve when the mechanical coupling features are interfaced with the mating features of the gas valve. The junction box includes a current carrying element that electrically couples the electrical terminal strip with the quick-disconnect electrical connector. The enclosure includes an opening that facilitates access to at least the electrical terminal strip, and includes one or more access voids disposed to allow electrical wires to enter the enclosure.

Methods, devices and systems for coupling an HVAC controller to an HVAC system are provided. In several embodiments, a sub-base is provided allowing an HVAC controller to be coupled to a printed wire board to allow, in some cases, modification of the HVAC controller function. The sub-base may include a plurality of terminals, each terminal having a contact mating feature for receiving a pin of an HVAC controller, a terminal block location for receiving an end of a wire, and a transformation pin-out adapted to couple to a printed wire board, with the contact mating feature, the terminal block location, and the transformation pin-out being electrically coupled together. In one embodiment, an HVAC controller is modified to allow a controller adapted for use with a single fuel system to control dual fuel system.

Devices and methods for providing a switch for selecting which of a number of fuel valves receives power. The switch preferably provides a delay between the powering down of a first fuel valve and the powering up of a second fuel valve. Also included are systems and methods for providing an electrical, printed circuit board mountable safety switch for switching fuel sources in a multi-fuel burning system.
