A weatherseal has a stiffener and a foam profile. A first portion of the foam profile is connected to the stiffener. A second portion of the foam profile is joined to the first portion at a hinge. The first and second foam profile portions have inner surfaces facing substantially towards each other and outer surfaces facing substantially away from each other. The foam profile defines at least one continuous elongate lumen. A portion of the foam profile has a resin coating.

Low compression-force TPE weatherseals

Methods for manufacturing fabric-reinforced weatherstrip include incorporating a fabric application step into a process for making coated substrates. In one embodiment, a strip of the fabric from a roll of material may be applied directly onto a coating after it has been applied in a coat die to a foam profile, while the coating is still in the molten state. Alternatively, a fabric application plate may be attached to an upstream side of coating die with a fabric feed channel cut into the plate. The fabric follows the channel to contact and mate with the foam profile. The fabric applicator plate may be configured so as to exert pressure on only the part of the product where the fabric is being applied. Ultrasonic welding techniques may also be employed.

Weatherseal base

In a process for extruding a low density foam, a foamable thermoplastic elastomer such as a thermoplastic rubber is selected. The selected thermoplastic elastomer is then fed into a heated extruder barrel where it is compressed and melted by the action of a screw. A blowing agent consisting of water is introduced into the melted thermoplastic elastomer. The melted thermoplastic elastomer and the water are thoroughly mixed and then cooled to a uniform, predetermined temperature. The mixture is then forced through a die to form an extruded foam profile.

Process for extruding low density foam using water blowing agent

An apparatus are described for extruding a soft, low density elastomeric thermoplastic foam. A single screw extruder having a very large screw length to diameter ratio is provided to thoroughly mix the thermoplastic elastomer with a blowing agent. A thin, substantially taperless die is also provided to form extruded profiles. By using such an apparatus, a variety of complex-shaped extruded profiles may be easily produced.

One embodiment of a gasket for shielding electromagnetic interference passing through a seam between first and second electrically conductive bodies includes a base for securing the gasket to the first, electrically conductive body and a multiplicity of discrete, elongate, metallized filaments projecting substantially perpendicularly from the base so that a substantial amount of the filaments contacts the second, electrically conductive body when electromagnetic interference passing through a seam between the bodies is to be shielded. The gasket further includes structure, arranged with the base, for providing an electrically conductive path for conducting electric current between the filaments and the first, electrically conductive body. In this manner, energy absorbed the shielding member as a result of the shielding of passing electromagnetic interference can be dissipated to ground through the first, electrically conductive body. The gasket is particularly useful for shielding electromagnetic energy passing through seams between electrical apparatus housings and door or access panels in such housings.

Method and apparatus for extruding a low density thermoplastic foam

A method and apparatus of applying a coating to a substrate is provided. A liquid resin is introduced into a first region at a predetermined pressure. The liquid resin is maintained within a first pressure range in the first region. Next, the flow of the resin from the first region to a second region is controlled so as to bring the resin from the first pressure range to a second pressure range, the pressures in the second pressure range being lower than the pressures in the first pressure range. The liquid resin is then applied at a pressure within the second pressure range to the substrate at a third region adjacent the second region.
