An internal combustion engine has at least two exhaust ports and a valve assembly. The valve assembly has first and second connectors, first and second actuator pistons connected to their corresponding connectors, the first and second actuator pistons being disposed in first and second chambers respectively, and first and second valves connected to their corresponding connectors. The first connector, actuator piston and valve are movable together between first and second positions. The second connector, actuator piston, and valve are movable together between first and second positions. A first fluid line supplies hydraulic fluid in the first and second chambers on a first side of the first and second actuator pistons. A second fluid line supplies hydraulic fluid in the first and second chambers on a second side of the first and second actuator pistons. At least one fluid pump supplies hydraulic fluid to the first and second fluid lines.

A marine outboard engine has a cowling, an engine, a driveshaft operatively connected to the crankshaft, a gear case, a transmission disposed in the gear case and connected to the driveshaft, a propeller shaft disposed generally perpendicular to the driveshaft and operatively connected to the transmission, and a bladed rotor connected to the propeller shaft. A pair of engine mounts are operatively connected to the engine. Each engine mount defines an engine mount working axis. A steering shaft is operatively pivotally connected to the engine mounts. The engine mount working axes are generally perpendicular to the steering axis and pass through the steering shaft. A stern bracket is operatively pivotally connected to the steering shaft for mounting the outboard engine to a boat. A marine outboard engine where primary axes of the engine mounts pass through the steering shaft is also disclosed.

A tiller arm pivotably mountable to a marine outboard engine about a pivot axis is described. First and second arms extend away from the pivot axis. A middle portion has a first end attached to the first and second arms. A handle portion extends away from the second end of the middle portion in a direction away from the pivot axis. A throttle grip is rotatably mounted to the handle portion and rotatable with respect thereto about a throttle grip axis generally perpendicular to the pivot axis. The throttle grip is operatively connectable to the marine outboard engine. The width of an aperture defined by the arms and the middle section is greater than the widths of the throttle grip and the first and second arms.

A two-stroke internal combustion engine has two cylinders each having an exhaust port. Two exhaust conduits are connected to the two exhaust ports. A passage is provided between the two conduits to fluidly communicate the two together. An actuator moves a valve to open or close the passage depending on the engine speed.

An air intake assembly having a bypass and method of operating an engine are disclosed. The air intake assembly has a first opening having a throttle plate disposed in the opening and configured to control the passage of combustion gas through the opening. A second opening is vented to atmosphere and configured to pass combustion gas through the second opening.

An apparatus and method for adjusting a throttle plate of a throttle assembly of an internal combustion engine is disclosed. A throttle linkage mechanically connects a throttle actuator to the throttle assembly with a deadband therebetween. The deadband allows the throttle plate to remain in a closed position during initial movement of the throttle actuator and initial acceleration, thereby reducing overall engine noise.

A submersible outboard motor that can be stored at or deployed at a subsurface location. The outboard motor includes an internal combustion engine, such as a two-stroke engine, that is fuel-injected. The use of the fuel injection and the design of the engine permits the outboard motor to be started at a surface location once retrieved from its subsurface location.

The present invention, in one aspect, is a cooling system for a marine engine and includes cylinder cooling jackets, cylinder head cooling jackets, and thermostatic and pressure controls which facilitate safely operating the engine with low water flow rates. In one specific embodiment, the cooling system is employed in a marine engine including a V-type cylinder block with two cylinder banks and a valley between the banks. Each cylinder bank includes a plurality of cylinder bores (e.g., each cylinder bank includes three cylinder bores in a six cylinder engine), and respective exhaust ducts extend from and are in flow communication with each cylinder bore. Respective coolant flow paths extend from the valley to a section of each cylinder bore water jacket adjacent each cylinder exhaust duct. Specifically, water is provided from the valley to adjacent each exhaust duct in the cylinder banks. Each cylinder bore water jacket includes an outlet at an upper portion of each said cylinder bank. A water flow path extends from each cylinder bore water jacket outlet to a respective cylinder head water jacket. Variable thermostats are in flow communication with each cylinder bore water jacket, and each thermostat is in flow communication with a dump. Each flow path through the respective thermostats is in parallel with a respective cylinder head. The thermostats allow cooling of the cylinders to be thermostatically controlled. Specifically, the amount of water supplied to the cylinder head cooling jackets depends on the temperature condition at the thermostats. The cylinder head water jackets are in flow communication with a parallel connected blow off valve and thermostat. The blow off valve and thermostat are in flow communication with the water dump. When the blow off valve opens, maximum cooling is provided in that water flows unrestricted from the valley, to the cylinder cooling jackets, to the cylinder head cooling jackets, through the blow off valve to the dump.

Marine engine cooling systems and methods

A system and method for facilitating cold starting of a direct injected, two-stroke engine. The engine utilizes a fuel injection system that is controlled to inject a fuel into a combustion chamber just before the piston reaches top dead center, at least during cold starting. This permits better atomization of a variety of fuels to promote dependable cold starting of the engine even when combusting a fuel type such as kerosene.

An engine in which the cylinders are scavenged according to a cross scavenging technique. The engine includes one or more cylinders in each of which a piston is disposed for reciprocal motion. The engine further includes a direct fuel injection system that allows controlled input of fuel into each cylinder to promote more efficient operation of the cross scavenged engine.

An engine that can operate on a plurality of fuel types. The engine includes one or more cylinders, a fuel injection system and an electronic control unit. The electronic control unit has stored a plurality of fuel maps corresponding to the plurality of fuel types.

Multi-fuel direct injection engine

A fuel delivery system uses a single electric fuel pump to deliver fuel to a fuel injected engine and returns excess fuel to the single electric fuel pump via a vapor separator and two pressure regulators. A primer bulb draws fuel from a fuel tank with a fuel supply line and transfers the fuel to the single electric fuel pump. The single electric fuel pump delivers fuel to a fuel rail assembly, which enables fuel to be distributed to each fuel injector during engine operation. A fuel return line connects the fuel rail assembly to the single electric fuel pump via the vapor separator to remove excess fuel from the fuel rail assembly and to transfer the excess fuel back to the single electric fuel pump for re-circulation. The first pressure regulator maintains a substantially constant pressure within the fuel injectors while the vapor separator purges entrained gas from the excess liquid fuel to avoid vapor lock. The second pressure regulator allows transfer of fuel to the single electric fuel pump from the vapor separator while preventing reverse flow of fuel from the fuel tank to the vapor separator.

A dead-headed or returnless fuel delivery system uses a single electric fuel pump to deliver fuel to a two-stroke fuel injected engine. The fuel pump draws fuel from a fuel tank via a fuel supply network or a fuel supply line, transfers the fuel through a fuel connector and a fuel filter, and delivers the fuel to a vapor separator. Fuel is then distributed to the fuel injectors without returning any fuel to the fuel delivery system. An engine control unit (ECU), connected to a pressure sensor, supplies a fuel supply signal to the fuel pump to maintain the supplied pressure P at a reference pressure Po.
