Compounds which, in one of the possible tautomeric forms, correspond to the general formula I ##STR1## where n is 1 or 2 and, if n is 1, R is unsubstituted or substituted aryl or heteroaryl or, if n is 2, R is a bridge member, and the rings A and B can be further substituted, are outstanding colorants for surface coatings, printing inks or plastics.

Anthraquinone azopyrazalone colorants

Thermally stable lead chromate pigments or pigments containing lead chromate, which have high color strength and are provided with a precipitated coating containing silicon dioxide, are prepared by a process in which an aqueous pigment suspension is mixed once or several times with an aqueous MgSiF.sub.6 solution, the pH being maintained at 4.5-9.5 and the temperature at 50.degree.-95.degree. C., and the pigment is then separated off and worked up, these steps being carried out in a conventional manner.

Preparation of thermally stable lead chromate pigments

A pigment of the formula: ##STR1## wherein each of the rings A, B and C independently is unsubstituted or is substituted by one, two or three radicals which do not confer solubility, or the ring A can additionally carry a fused ring. The novel compounds of the invention are useful as pigments for coloring, printing inks, plastics, and, especially, surface coatings.

Pigment compositions including nickel titanium yellow or chromium titanium yellow as an inorganic component together with an organic pigment component impart better gloss and/or hiding power to organic coatings containing 10% or more of the compositions if the compositions are prepared by subjecting a suspension of the components in a liquid medium to intense shearing stresses and thereafter separating the mixed pigments from the medium.

Process for preparing pigment compositions

Mixed pigments containing an organic pigment component and an inorganic pigment component imparting improved gloss and other desirable properties to organic coatings containing the same in relatively large amounts are prepared by synthesizing the organic component in the presence of the inorganic component in a liquid medium inert to the inorganic component, such as nickel titanium yellow or chromium titanium yellow.

Mixed pigment and process of preparing the same

Dyes of the formula I ##STR1## in which A is phenyl or phenyl substituted by chloro, bromo, nitro, methyl, ethyl, methoxy or ethoxy; B.sup.1 is hydrogen, chloro, bromo, nitro, methyl or trifluoromethyl; B.sup.2 is hydrogen, chloro, bromo or nitro; R is C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl; and X is hydrogen, chloro or bromo. The compounds are distinguished by high color strength, brilliance and good fastness properties such as light-fastness, fastness to overspraying, plasticizers fastness and insolubility in most solvents used in connection with pigments. They are particularly suitable for the coloring of air-drying surface coatings, rigid polyvinyl chloride and emulsion paints.
