A gradient coil unit is described that is designed as a hollow cylinder surrounding a patient receiving region in the longitudinal direction and is subdivisible into four quadrants, comprising a primary coil including a conductor structure that includes a geometric arrangement of an electrical conductor with a conductor cross-section arranged within a quadrant of the four quadrants. The quadrant comprises at least one neutral region, which is defined in the longitudinal direction between a first longitudinal position and a second longitudinal position, and characterized in that the current density averaged over the neutral region is less than 25% of the maximum current density averaged over the conductor cross-section within the neutral region. The gradient coil unit is free of a secondary coil and/or free of an active screening.

A gradient coil unit may include a hollow cylinder surrounding a cylinder axis, delimited perpendicularly to the cylinder axis by a first longitudinal end and a second longitudinal end opposing the first longitudinal end. The hollow cylinder may include a first hollow cylinder region and a second hollow cylinder region separated from the first hollow cylinder region by a sectional plane perpendicular to the cylinder axis. The first hollow cylinder region may be delimited by the first longitudinal end and the second hollow cylinder region by the second longitudinal end. The gradient coil unit may also include a conductor structure configured to generate magnetic field gradients in three mutually different directions. The gradient coil unit may have a length corresponding to a distance between the first longitudinal end and the second longitudinal end of at least 140 cm.

A device for use in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems may include a superconducting main magnet coil; and a thermal radiation shield that encloses the superconducting main magnet coil. The shield may include an inner cylindrical bore tube, an outer cylindrical wall, and annular end walls welded between the annular cylindrical bore tube and the outer cylindrical wall to form a closed, hollow cylindrical vessel. A distribution of a position and length of welds that affix the annular end walls to the inner cylindrical bore tube may include a predetermined arrangement of welds of varying lengths interspersed with gaps of varying lengths.

A method for determining peripheral nerve stimulation during MR imaging of a patient in a MR scan unit for a MR pulse sequence is described. In the method, a plurality of model-based candidate stimulations are determined dependent on a unit vector potential of the gradient magnet field generated during MR imaging and dependent on candidate data models for different object parameter values. A model-based candidate data stimulation is selected as a stimulation model for the patient dependent on an individual patient model. A distribution of a vector potential of a gradient magnetic field acting on the patient is determined as a function of a unit gradient current for a determined position of the patient in the MR scanning unit. The nerve stimulation of the patient is determined for the determined position based on the selected candidate stimulation and a gradient current of a gradient pulse of the MR pulse sequence.
