An electrical contact grid array includes a board having a top side and an opposite bottom side, a plurality of signal conductors mounted to the board, and a plurality of ground shield structures mounted to the board. Each of the signal conductors includes an upper signal contact extending beyond the top side of the board for electrically connecting with a corresponding mating contact of a mating circuit board. Each of the ground shield structures includes at least one ground contact disposed above the top side of the board that defines an upper annular shield. The upper annular shield circumferentially surrounds at least one of the upper signal contacts.

Electrical contact grid array

An electrical connector includes an insulator holding a plurality of contacts in an array corresponding to an array of pads on an electronic device. At least one shorting path electrically connects at least two of the contacts in the array. The insulator includes a plurality of apertures therethrough, with each aperture defining a contact location on the insulator. The insulator includes a channel formed between at least two contact locations. The channel defines a location of a shorting path and the shorting path is at least partially within the insulator.

An electrical interconnect system for providing electrical connection between two or more opposing arrays of contact areas, the electrical interconnect having a conductive substrate and conductors electrically isolated from the substrate.

Electrical interconnect system utilizing non-conductive elastomeric elements

A laminated electrical contact strip includes a plurality of electrical contacts. Each electrical contact includes a pair of opposite first and second surfaces extending between a pair of opposite end portions. A pair of first and second dielectric layers are laminated over the plurality of electrical contacts such that the first and second dielectric layers hold the plurality of electrical contacts therebetween. The first dielectric layer is bonded to and covers a portion of the first surface of each of the electrical contacts. The second dielectric layer is bonded to and covers a portion of the second surface of each of the electrical contacts.

Laminated electrical contact strip

An electrical interconnect device includes a substrate having opposite outer surfaces and an array of conductive elastomeric columns held by the substrate. Each of the columns have opposite ends that extend beyond respective ones of the outer surfaces of the substrate. Conductive contact caps are disposed over the opposite ends of each said column. An electrical path is defined from one of the contact caps, through the conductive elastomeric column, to another of the contact caps. Optionally, the contact caps may be sized and shaped substantially similarly as the ends of the elastomeric columns. The contact caps may be adhered to the ends of the columns, or alternatively, the contact caps may be adhered to the substrate.

Electrical interconnect device utilizing contact caps

A socket connector includes an insulator having a plurality of apertures. A plurality of contacts are held by the insulator and arranged in groups. Each group includes plural contacts disposed around a periphery of a respective aperture. Each contact includes a polymer contact body having first and second opposite contact tips. A conductive coating extends on the contact body from the first contact tip to the second contact tip.

Connector with metalized coated polymer contact

An electrical interconnect system is provided including a substrate and an array of electrical contacts held in the substrate. Each of the electrical contacts includes a nonconductive elastomeric element and an associated conductive element. The nonconductive element has opposite ends that are disposed beyond respective opposite sides of the substrate. The conductive element includes a body having opposite ends that are disposed exteriorly of the respective opposite ends of the nonconductive elastomeric element. The opposite ends of the nonconductive elastomeric element resiliently press against the respective opposite ends of the conductive element when a force is applied to the electrical contact.

Electrical interconnect system utilizing nonconductive elastomeric elements and continuous conductive elements

A connector for board-to-board or board-to-socket interconnect applications includes a plurality of conductive elastomeric columnar contacts surrounded by an insulative body. In one embodiment employed in board-to-board applications, the columnar contacts are substantially longer than wide to facilitate mounting of components between opposed boards. The conductive columnar contacts extend slightly beyond the surfaces of the insulative body. The body may include integral raised collars that surround opposing ends of the conductive columnar contacts and at least one stop flange integral with the body that limits overstress on tips of the conductive columnar contacts.

Conductive elastomeric contact system

A connector for board-to-board and board-to-device interconnect applications includes a plurality of conductive elastomeric columnar contacts arranged in a contact array and retained in a first plurality of openings in an insulative substrate and a plurality of stops retained in a second plurality of openings in the insulative substrate. The stops are dispersed among the contacts of the contact array or positioned on the periphery of the contact array and located in non-abutting relation with respect to adjacent contacts. The contacts and the stops have opposing end surfaces and the end surfaces of the contacts are located a greater distance from the substrate than the end surfaces of the stops such that the stops limit the compression of the elastomeric contacts when the connector is disposed in its intended mounting orientation.

Conductive elastomeric contact system with anti-overstress columns

A connector for board-to-board and board to device interconnect applications includes a plurality of conductive elastomeric columnar contacts surrounded by respective insulative support columns. The elastomeric columnar contacts extend through holes in an insulative subtrate. The insulative support columns have opposing end surfaces disposed on opposite sides of a substrate and end surfaces of the columnar contacts are located at a distance from the substrate slightly greater than the distance between the substrate and the support column end surfaces. Insulative intermediate columns serve a mechanical stops that resist further compression of the elastomeric contacts and the support columns when the connector is subjected to excessive axial compressive forces. The intermediate columns have opposing end surfaces on opposing sides of the substrate that are spaced from the substrate a distance less than the support column end surfaces.

Interconnection apparatus is provided which is especially useful to mount and connect circuit boards having a contact assembly of resilient compressive contacts to a backplane or other mateable board or device. The apparatus includes an enclosure having guide channels for each board to be housed in the enclosure, a contact assembly for providing compressive contact between the contact ends of each board and corresponding contacts of the backplane, and elements for seating each board into engagement with the backplane.
