In a method an owner of copyright in a copyright work uses computer equipment to transmit digital signal containing information regarding the copyright work to physically remote computer equipment of a licensing administrator. The licensing administrator uses the computer equipment thereof to receive the digital signal and to store the information contained in the digital signal in an electronic database. An applicant for a license to copy the copyright work uses computer equipment of the license applicant to transmit to the physically remote computer equipment of the licensing administrator request for a license. The licensing administrator uses the computer equipment thereof to receive the request, to process the request in conjunction with the digitally stored information regarding the copyright work in order to generate a license to copy the copyright work and to send a digital signal to the license applicant to confirm granting of the license.

A method and apparatus for screening a call in a telecommunications network having a first system comprising a first subscriber station and a second system comprising a second subscriber station, associated with the first subscriber station by a predetermined relationship. Each subscriber station in the first system has a unique subscriber number and the second system having a general number for all subscriber stations. In the method and apparatus, call setup requests for calls to the general number of the second system are screened to determine if the call was originally made to the number of the first subscriber station and then forwarded to the general number of the second system, or if the call was originally made to the general number. If the call was originally made to the first subscriber station, only the second subscriber station is alerted. If the call was originally made to the general number, all the subscriber stations in the second system are alerted.

A method and apparatus for controlling a base station of a first telecommunications system using control information generated in a second telecommunications system and transferred to the base station through a mobile station capable of operating in both the first and second systems. Apparatus and a method for inhibiting spurious responses in the receiver stage of a radio telephone are disclosed. A detector detects the transmission of an RF signal from the transceiver and sends a control signal indicative of such transmission to a linearity controller. The linearity controller is coupled to non-linear devices in the receiver stage of a transceiver and varies the linearity of the non-linear devices in accordance with the control signal. Preferably, the linearity is varied by increasing the bias current or voltage for the non-linear devices when the control signal indicates transmission of an RF signal.

An antenna assembly comprises an elongate radiating antenna (11) movable between a retracted position and an extended position. A pair of concentric conductors (9,10) provide coaxial feed to the antenna (11). In the retracted position the antenna 11 in conjunction with the coaxial feed (9,10) constitute a quarter wavelength transmission line which is short-circuited by a conductive flange (15) on the antenna. A short-circuited quarter wavelength transmission line electrically appears as an open circuit at the feed point. The antenna is thus automatically decoupled when it is moved to the retracted position without the need for additional switching or screening elements.

A transceiver for a cellular telephone, particularly a portable telephone, comprises a transmitter and a receiver coupled to a common antenna by an antenna duplex filter. The duplex filter comprises two passband filters connected respectively to the transmitter and the receiver. The receiver comprises a first amplifier. A notch filter tuned to the transmit frequency is connected to the output of the amplifier. The notch filter enables the filtering performance of the receive filter to be relaxed, and the location of the notch filter(s) at the output of amplifier means that the insertion loss is less critical. The requirement for lower filtering performance enables the duplex filter to be smaller and less costly.
