A mobile telecommunications network includes a core and a radio access network having radio means for wireless communication with mobile terminals registered with the network, wherein the radio access network includes control meansoperable to control the use of network resources by the mobile terminals. The control means processes control plane signalling.

Telecommunication networks

A cellular telecommunications network architecture is described where certain UEs are configured to assist the network to improve coverage in regions of poor radio conditions. In certain embodiments, appropriate UEs are selected to act as a dynamic, out-of-band coverage extensions. Network performance can thereby be improved when serving users at the cell edge (or in other poor radio condition regions of a cell). Data from UEs connected to those assisting UEs is encrypted to allow secure transit of data without requiring modification to the RAN or Core Network.

Telecommunication system for relaying cellular coverage

A mobile telecommunications network includes a core, a radio access network, and a platform control unit. The platform control unit is capable of identifying a network path of a communication that originated from a mobile terminal. Based on certain characteristics of the communication, the platform control unit will determine whether the communication should be offloaded from its network route. If the communication is to be offloaded, then the platform control unit causes the communication to bypass the network's core.

A mobile telecommunications network includes: a radio access network having radio means () for wireless communication with a plurality of terminals () registered with the telecommunications network and control means () operable to provide services to the users of the terminals connected thereto, and a core () including a store of policy information () for respective ones of the terminals (), and distribution means operable to provide to the control means associated with one of the terminals the policy information; wherein the control means is operable to store the policy information together with an indicator of the version of the policy information during periods when the terminal is disconnected from the control means, the control means including checking means for checking the currency of the policy using the indicator of the version of the policy and means for applying the stored policy information to the terminal when the terminal re-connects to the control means if the checking means determines that the stored policy is current.

A mobile telecommunications network includes: a radio access network having radio means () for wireless communication with a plurality of terminals () registered with the telecommunications network and control means () operable to control interaction of the terminals with the radio access network; and a core () including a store of policy information comprising group policy data () applicable to a group of the terminals and individual policy data applicable to respective ones of the terminals (), and distribution means operable to provide to the control means associated with each of the terminals an indicator of the group policy data applicable to each of the terminals and the individual policy data applicable to each of the terminals.

To reduce the number of subcarriers used for the transmission of reference symbols by base stations in an OFDM based cellular telecommunications network, the level of data for transmission from the base station to at least one subscriber station is determined and, when traffic levels are low and/or where the mobile station is unable to make efficient use of the full bandwidth, reference symbol data is transmitted from the base station using a number of the subcarriers less than the total number of subcarriers available. Thus the reference symbol frequency spread&#x2014;the bandwidth between the lowest frequency subcarrier and the highest frequency subcarrier being used to transmit reference symbols&#x2014;is made dependent upon the determined level of data for transmission.

Resource allocation in an OFDM communication system

A radio network control method that allows uplink signals transmitted by a mobile station to be received by two or more selected base station radio systems and then combined, thus providing receiver diversity. The method requires measurement of radio link qualities of the OFDM signals passing between mobile station and base station radio system. The method is selectively applied to individual mobile stations and for each mobile station to a selection from the available base station radio systems&#x2014;the selection being based upon the relative and/or absolute measurements of radio link qualities.

Radio network control

A mobile telecommunications network includes a core network and a radio access network. The radio access network has a network node that wirelessly communicates with a mobile terminal registered with the radio access network. The radio access network includes a controller that controls the use of network resources by the mobile terminal and processes control plane signaling. The controller includes an applicator that receives policy information and/or routing information from the core network and provides instructions to the network node to act in accordance with the received information. The network node includes an enforcer that enforces the instructions received from the controller so as to control whether the terminal uplink user plane traffic and control plane signalling messages are passed to the core network, routed to the controller, or duplicated and provided to both the core network and the controller.

To avoid reference symbol collision, between reference symbols used by neighboring cells in an OFDM based cellular telecommunications network, the transmission symbols on a given subcarrier used by respective neighboring base stations are compared and where both transmission symbols are determined to be reference symbols the start time of the frame timing period of one of the base stations is adjusted.

Cellular radio network

In a telecommunications network including a mobile terminal and a base station associated with a plurality of antennas, with each antenna configured to transmit the signal with a time offset relative to the other antenna or antennas, an engine for controlling a signal to be transmitted wirelessly from the base station towards the mobile terminal, the engine being configured to receive one or more parameter measurements relevant to the mobile terminal; and use the one or more parameter measurements to adjust the time offset of at least one of the antennas in order to adapt the signal transmission dependent upon the mobile terminal's instantaneous circumstances. Ideally the engine is configured to receive the one or more parameter measurements relating to a plurality of different mobile terminals, and independently adjust the time offset for each of the plurality of different mobile terminals, depending upon the one or more applicable parameter measurements.
