A hybrid battery system is provided for extending the shelf-life of rechargeable batteries. The hybrid battery system may contain sets of non-rechargeable and rechargeable batteries respectively. As the rechargeable batteries are discharged (e.g., from self-discharge), the hybrid battery system may utilize the non-rechargeable batteries to maintain the rechargeable batteries at a preferred state of charge. A preferred state of charge may be selected to extend the shelf-life of the rechargeable batteries. Alternatively, a signal may change the preferred state of charge to prepare the rechargeable batteries for use or for other reasons. The hybrid battery system may contain modular components, thereby allowing for easy replacement of defective or otherwise unsuitable non-rechargeable batteries, rechargeable batteries, or supporting electronics.

Extending shelf life of rechargeable batteries

The present disclosure provides an improved high watt-hour lithium ion rechargeable battery pack including a plurality of cells not comprising a multiple of eight and an electrical circuit to provide a battery pack that mimics eight cells in series. In particular, the present disclosure relates to a battery pack comprising a non-multiple of eight cells of the type typically used in a 2590 battery pack and a corresponding mechanical packing assembly. The improved electromechanical design may provide an increased capacity and reduced heat of the cells upon discharge as compared to a standard 2590 battery pack, and may also avoid an imbalance that may arise when using multiple internal battery packs. The disclosed improved battery packs require only one control circuit to provide voltage regulation as well as the protection, balancing, and fuel gauge circuit functions for all of the energy cells, leading to reductions in both complexity and cost.

Rechargeable storage battery with improved performance

An electrical energy storage and delivery system for supplying electrical energy to a system load and method of operation. The system including an energy storage module comprising a charger coupled to a high power battery module and a high energy battery module; a first matrix switch coupled to the charger and a second matrix switch; and an energy shuttle coupled to a status signal of at least the energy storage module and the system load. The second matrix switch coupled to the first matrix switch, the high power battery module, the high energy battery module and a system load connection. The energy shuttle configured to transmit a plurality of control signals to set an interconnection state of the first matrix switch, the charger and the second matrix switch.
