Apparatuses and methods for reducing latency in a conveyance of data in networks

Various embodiments of the disclosed subject matter provide methods and systems to store a policy specifying rules relating to recording, storage or delivery of broadcast programming to a consumer of such programming, and to record, store or deliver broadcast programming in response to a rule. According to an example embodiment, a method and system provide for a subscriber requesting that a broadcast television program be saved for the subscriber upstream from the subscriber in a television distribution system, and that the program offered to the subscriber for saving is determined based on a policy established for the program. According to another example embodiment a system provides a computing device including a computer program to control the recording or delivery of a broadcast television program in accordance with a policy established to control the recording or delivery of the broadcast television program.

System and method for recording and time-shifting programming in a television distribution system using policies

A method includes receiving an indication of at least one detected security issue at a network device. The indication is received at a security manager processor from a security agent. The method includes selecting, via the security manager processor, at least one executable security object responsive to the indication. The security manager processor verifies compatibility between the at least one executable security object, the network device, and communication media. The method also includes sending the at least one executable security object to the network device via the security manager processor to provide a protective security measure to the network device against the at least one detected security issue upon execution of the at least one executable security object.

System and method for providing network security

A method includes receiving input from a remote control device at a set-top box device. The input identifies media content that includes audio content and video content. The input also indicates that the audio content is to be output via an audio output device coupled to the set-top box device without sending the video output from the set-top box device to an external display device coupled to the set-top box device. The method includes determining whether the media content is stored at a local memory device of the set-top box device. When the media content is stored at the local memory device, the method includes retrieving the media content from the local memory, sending a first audio signal corresponding to the audio content of the media content to the audio output device and blocking output of the video content to the external display device.

Various embodiments of the disclosed subject matter provide methods and systems to record broadcast programming for at least one television channel for a period of time, wherein the recording is performed upstream from subscribers in a television distribution system, and further including after the period of time, keeping recorded programming by request from at least one subscriber. And further wherein the request is for at least one television program contained in the recorded programming or for a time window for a particular channel. According to another embodiment a subscriber requests that broadcast programming be saved for the subscriber upstream from the subscriber in a television distribution system, and wherein the subscriber may request the programming be saved for later viewing by the subscriber between the time the programming was broadcast and a later point in time.

System and method for recording and time-shifting programming in a television distribution system with limited content retention

A method includes receiving an indication of at least one detected security issue at a network device. The indication is received from a security agent at a security manager processor. The method includes polling, via the security manager processor, at least one other network device in response to the indication in order to retrieve additional information when the security manager processor determines that the additional information is needed. The method includes selecting, via the security manager processor, at least one executable security object responsive to the indication and the additional information. The method also includes initiating communication of the at least one executable security object to the network device via the security manager processor.

Policy-based routing of packets over a peer-to-peer, quality of service connection includes sending a connection setup request, over a control connection to a connection establishing device, to dynamically establish the peer-to-peer, quality of service connection between a source peer implemented on at least one device and a destination peer implemented on at least one device. Packets originating from an application requiring a specified level of service are transmitted, from the source peer implemented on at least one device, over the peer-to-peer, quality of service connection. Packets originating from an application that does not require the specified level of service are transmitted, from the source peer implemented on at least one device, over a best effort connection.

Systems, methods, and apparatus are disclosed to enable backup wireless devices. An example method disclosed herein includes receiving an activation code associated with a backup wireless device to activate the backup wireless device, and in response to receiving the activation code, transmitting a deactivation instruction to a primary wireless device along with a deactivation message for presentation on a visual display of the primary wireless device.

Systems, methods, and apparatus to enable backup wireless devices

A system, set-top box, and method of providing audio content are disclosed. In a particular embodiment, the set-top box device includes an audio input device that is configured to receive a voice command. The set-top box device also includes a display disposed on a visible side of a set-top box housing. Additionally, the set-top box device includes a media control logic module to retrieve audio content identified by the voice command and data related to the audio content. The media control logic module transmits an audio signal corresponding to the audio content to an audio output device. The data related to the audio content is displayable on the display.

A system and method are disclosed for monitoring communications of an individual in a packet network. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a network monitor having a communications interface coupled to a packet network, and a controller. The controller can be programmed to receive a request from a third party to monitor communications associated with an individual, convey to the third party information monitored on a group of one or more permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) of the packet network associated with the individual, detect an update in the group of one or more PVCs, determine new set of one or more PVCs associated with the individual, and convey to the third party information monitored from the new set of one or more PVCs.

A method and apparatus for automatic synchronization of monitoring points for a network management system ('NMS') along a permanent virtual circuit ('PVC') is disclosed. A NMS in an asynchronous transfer mode (&#x201c;ATM&#x201d;) network coupled to a plurality of ATM switches is operative to monitor each of the plurality of ATM switches storied in a monitoring service object corresponding to a PVC. The NMS receives at least one notification from at least one ATM switch of the plurality of ATM switches indicating an ATM switch has been added or removed from the PVC. In response to the at least notification, the NMS adds at least one ATM switch to the monitoring service object or removes at least one ATM switch from the monitoring service object.

An example method disclosed herein includes receiving an activation code from a first wireless device, transmitting a deactivation instruction to a second wireless device in response to receiving the activation code for the first wireless device, transmitting a location instruction to the second wireless device to invoke a location function of the second wireless device, receiving information indicative of the location of the second wireless device in response to the transmitted location instruction, and sending an e-mail message indicative of the location of the second wireless device to an account owner of the second wireless device in response to receiving the information indicative of the location.
