An antenna system is provided that includes at least one driven radiator element and at least one coupling device. The at least one driven radiator element is disposed above a printed circuit board. The at least one coupling device has a step feature in at least one of width and diameter. A smaller of the at least one of the width and diameter is received in at least one of a via and slot in the printed circuit board. The at least one coupling device is oriented nominally orthogonal to a plane of the printed circuit board. The at least one solder joint couples the at least one coupling device to the printed circuit board. At least one ground plane layer is electrically connected to the at least one coupling device by at least one of the solder joint and the at least one of a via and a slot.

Crossed dipole with enhanced gain at low elevation

A printed circuit board for use with a cooling device configured to cool at least one device is provided. The printed circuit board includes a substrate having a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface; a ground plane on the first surface of the substrate, and circuitry in a circuit-region on the second surface of the substrate. The ground plane includes a patterned-region that is patterned with an array of holes. The circuitry is configured for use with the at least one device to be cooled. When a first side of the cooling device contacts the ground plane, and when the at least one device to be cooled contacts the circuitry, a reduced cross-sectional area of the patterned-region prevents heat from a second side of the cooling device from degrading performance of the at least one device.

Reduced thermal transfer to Peltier cooled FETs

The present invention provides a high-performance helical antenna element and array thereof for use in an aircraft communication system or the like, where stringent spatial restrictions and gain requirements generally apply. The performance of the array is enhanced by connecting conductive plates to the windings of the antenna elements at the terminal ends thereof such that the conductive plates are offset from the axes of the antenna elements and toward the center of the array.

Optimal loading for increased gain in an array antenna

A dielectric resonator element array (DRA) antenna system that is small, compact, has high gain in the direction of intended communication, minimized interference in unintended directions of communication and a wide bandwidth. The antenna system comprises a ground plane, a feed structure, a beam shaping and steering controller, a mounting apparatus, an array of dielectric resonator elements and a radome that is close to or in contact with the array. The mounting apparatus preferably is configured so as not to appreciably increase the size of the system when mounted. The controller receives and processes information relating to one or more of object latitude, longitude, attitude, direction of travel, intended direction of communication and unintended directions of communication. The controller processes this information and determines excitation phase for the array elements.

Dielectric-resonator array antenna system

The present invention provides a dual antenna system where a first antenna element has a metallic surface with openings that are resonant at frequencies other than the operating frequency of a second antenna element. The openings are sized such that the metallic components are relatively transparent at and near resonant frequencies of those openings. According to the present invention, the resonant frequencies of the openings may be the transmitting or receiving frequencies of the second antenna element, or of nearby antennas.

Complementary dual antenna system

A drive mechanism for an antenna array mounted on a moving vehicle. The antenna array is mounted on a disc having two motors which, cooperatively, rotate the disc and rotate a number of antenna elements mounted on the disc. By rotating the antenna elements, the main lobe of the array may be scanned towards a satellite in the elevation plane. To track a moving source from a moving vehicle, one of the motors rotates the disc as a whole, thereby scanning the beam in the azimuth plane. Each antenna element is at an angle to the vertical so that, by rotating the disc to face the direction of the signal source, such as a satellite, a better signal can be obtained.

Mechanism for differential dual-directional antenna array

A dielectric lens including a plurality of wedges being formed from a dielectric material, each of the plurality of wedges being substantially identical and orange-slice shaped and including two planar surfaces separated by an angular width, and each of the plurality of wedges having a plurality of gaps for altering an effective permittivity of the dielectric lens, wherein the plurality of wedges form the dielectric lens by connecting the plurality of wedges along the planar surfaces such that each of the planar surfaces intersect along a common line.

Method for fabricating luneburg lenses

Systems and devices for mechanically rotating the polarisation of a signal emanating from or being received by an antenna system. The rotation of the polarisation is achieved by mechanically rotating the feed using a non-metallic drive cord or belt connected to a motor which is displaced outside or behind the radiating aperture. For a linear array of multiple antenna elements, each feed for each antenna element is rotated simultaneously and by an equal amount through the use of a drive system common to all the feeds. The drive system is coupled to each feed and to a drive motor. When the motor is activated, the drive system simultaneously rotates each feed by a given amount. By rotating the feed, the polarisation of the signal is correspondingly rotated and compensation for polarisation loss is provided.

Polarization control of parabolic antennas

An antenna system consisting of parabolic rectangular reflectors disposed contiguously in a linear array. The use of parabolic rectangular reflectors permits the reflectors to form a larger common rectangular aperture without gaps in illumination. The contiguous array of parabolic rectangular reflectors permits a lower profile which is ideal for use on an aircraft. Each parabolic rectangular reflector has its own feed system and each of the feeds are excited in phase. The combined radiation patterns of the parabolic reflectors produces a beam with a narrow width. This narrow beamwidth permits the system to communicate with one source while filtering out signals coming from other sources. In one embodiment, the antenna system may be mechanically steered in order to communicate with a transmitter and/or receiver whose relative position is continuously varying with respect to the antenna system.

Multimedia aircraft antenna

A pentagonal antenna array having a high aperture efficiency and a suitably high overall gain and low antenna noise temperature. The high aperture efficiency of this antenna system provides an overall system capacity suitable for broadband communication services. The antenna array consists of five antenna elements each located at a separate vertex of a pentagon. The antenna elements are helical antennas to provide a narrow antenna beam width. The antenna array itself is supported on a base platter which may be steered to point at a satellite using conventional gimbal ring apparatus. The base platter is a planar reflector to reflect the antenna element radiation in the rear direction and thereby reduce the antenna backlobe levels. The input power and the signal transmitted are fed through a phasing/combining network. The phasing/combining network appropriately divides the signal and the input power and phases the signal, prior to feeding the signal to each of the five antenna elements.

Pentagonal helical antenna array

An antenna assembly comprising a radiating element which passively receives a signal fed by a vertically-stacked pair of asymmetrically-shaped, conductive cone elements mounted below the radiating element. The cone elements are centrally fed by a coaxial cable input at a common junction formed the apex of each cone element. This antenna assembly provides a low-profile antenna to transmit and receive radio frequency (RF) energy with high gain and desirable antenna patterns for data transmission in an in-building, wireless local area network. The antenna assembly can be mounted in a standard ceiling or wall-mounted enclosure, with the low-profile antenna extending beneath the surface of a conductive enclosure cover that serves as the ground plane for the antenna element. This configuration achieves high antenna gain with a downtilt-beam, omnidirectional radiation pattern, which is highly desirable in an in-building wireless local area network (WLAN) application.

Omnidirectional antenna for a computer system

A ridged feed horn antenna for use in broadband satellite communications. This multi-ridged feed horn operates in a receive band of 10-13 GHz and a transmit band of 14-15 GHz. The ridged feed horn antenna comprises excitation conductors which excite the field between each of the ridges in the feed horn antenna. The excitation conductors are connected to each of the ridges. A waveguide, terminated at the back of the horn antenna, enables the ridges to guide the energy from their respective excitation conductors toward the mouth of the feed horn antenna. A planar balun and matching circuit, located at the back of the horn antenna, may be used to feed each of the excitation conductors. Furthermore, the cross-section of each excitation conductor is chosen so as to optimize horn antenna performance. Each excitation conductor extends outwardly from the back of the horn and is parallel to the longitudinal axes of the horn waveguide. Essentially, a dual-ridged feed horn would require two excitation conductors and a quad-ridged feed horn would require four excitation conductors.

High power broadband feed

An antenna array of parabolic rectangular reflectors for use in satellite communications. The antenna comprises two parabolic reflectors disposed contiguously on a common outer surface. The common surface forms a continuous antenna aperture. The parabolic reflectors have rectangular side edges which permit the adjacent edges of the parabolic reflectors to be spaced closely. The mouth of each parabolic reflector is focussed on a separate feed. The focus of the feed is not located at the center of the reflector but rather offset. The antenna feeds and the reflector foci are displaced toward the center of the array such that the spacing between the antenna feeds is less than half the length of the antenna. The present invention provides the displacement of each reflector focal point and each antenna feed toward the center of the array.

Low sidelobe contiguous-parabolic reflector array

A phased-array antenna whose main beam can be positioned (scanned) substantially anywhere within a full hemispherical coverage. The phased-array antenna consists of a plurality of radiating multi-filar helix antenna elements, each of which is independently rotatable on its helix axis relative to the antenna base plane. The rotation of each radiating element substantially decreases the noise temperature, the passive intermodulation of signals, and the sidelobe levels relative to an antenna which uses PIN diode phase shifters. A change in the radiated signal phase of each element in the antenna array is achieved by the mechanical rotation of the multi-filar helical antenna element on its axis. Mechanical rotation is provided by a drive system or multiple drive systems coupled to at least one radiating antenna element. The drive system rotates the at least one radiating element on its axis by various amounts. The amount of rotation is directly proportional to the amount of phase shift required of that particular multi-filar helical antenna element relative to the other antenna elements.
