Tandem catalysts for the dehydrogenation of alkanes and/or alcohols in tandem with selective hydrogen combustion are provided. Also provided are methods of making the catalysts and methods of using the catalysis for the dehydrogenation of alkanes and/or alcohols. The catalysts include a support having a surface, dehydrogenation catalysts particles dispersed on the surface of the support, and a porous selective hydrogen combustion catalyst overcoat on the dehydration catalyst particles. The catalysts couple dehydrogenation with selective hydrogen combustion in a sequence of reactions occurring in tandem to shift the equilibrium of the dehydrogenation towards higher conversion.

Tandem catalysis for alkane and alcohol dehydrogenation coupled to selective hydrogen combustion

A method is provided comprising exposing a supported heterogeneous metathesis catalyst to an olefin compound for an activation time at an activation temperature; exposing the activated supported heterogeneous metathesis catalyst to a reactant capable of undergoing a metathesis reaction for a reaction time at a reaction temperature to produce metathesis products; and exposing the deactivated supported heterogeneous metathesis catalyst to a regenerating compound for a regeneration time at a regeneration temperature. The activity of the regenerated supported heterogeneous metathesis catalyst may be substantially the same or greater than the activity of the activated supported heterogeneous metathesis catalyst prior to deactivation. The activation temperature may be greater than the reaction temperature. The regenerating compound may be a second olefin compound or an inert gas.

Supported metal oxides for olefin metathesis and related methods

Embodiments include metal catalyst compositions and methods of forming metal catalyst compositions. A metal catalyst composition can be formed by (a) contacting a supported metal catalyst surface with a ligand-containing alumina precursor for a predetermined contact time to form an intermediate layer having a plurality of aluminum moieties that chemically bond to the supported metal catalyst surface, optionally, contacting the intermediate layer of aluminum moieties with an inert gas for a predetermined intermediate stripping time to remove unreacted ligand-containing alumina precursors, (b) reacting the aluminum moieties with an oxidation reagent for a predetermined reaction time to convert at least a portion of the ligands to hydroxyl groups thereby forming a layer of the alumina over-coat on the supported metal catalyst surface or a previously formed layer of the alumina over-coat, (c) contacting the layer of the alumina over-coat formed in step (b) with an inert gas for a predetermined stripping time to remove unreacted oxidation reagents, replicating the sequential steps (a-c) to form an additional layer of the alumina over-coat, and (d) activating the alumina over-coat, after forming a final layer of the alumina over-coat, to form a plurality of pores therein.

Metal catalyst composition

Embodiments include metal () containing composites () and methods of forming metal containing composites. A metal containing composite can be formed by contacting an oxide support surface () with coordination compounds having metal atoms for a first predetermined time, where the metal atoms of the coordination compounds deposit on the oxide support surface; contacting the oxide support surface with a first reagent for a second predetermined time; and contacting the first reagent with a second reagent for a third predetermined time, where the first reagent and the second reagent react to form another layer of the oxide support surface.

The present invention relates to compositions, devices and methods for detecting microorganisms (e.g., anthrax). In particular, the present invention provides portable, surface-enhanced Raman biosensors, and associated substrates, and methods of using the same, for use in rapidly detecting and identifying microorganisms (e.g., anthrax).

Compositions, devices and methods for SERS and LSPR

Methods for the selective deposition of materials within a porous substrate. The methods use the passivating effects of masking precursors applied to the porous substrate. A portion of a pore surface within the substrate is masked by exposing the substrate to one or more masking precursors. The depth of the pore surface that is masked is controllable by regulating the exposure of the substrate to the masking precursor. Application of the masking precursor prevents adsorption of one or more subsequently applied metal precursors about a portion of the pore surface coated by the masking precursor. Less than an entirety of the unmasked pore surface is coated by the metal precursor, forming a metal stripe on a portion of the pore surface. The depth of the metal stripe is controllable by regulating exposure of the porous substrate to the metal precursor. Subsequent exposure of the substrate to a saturating water application oxidizes the deposited precursors.

Spatially controlled atomic layer deposition in porous materials

A catalyst includes a carrier body and a catalytic portion carried by the carrier body. The catalytic portion includes a plurality of distinct layers of catalytic material, which layers may be deposited through atomic layer deposition techniques. The catalyst may have a selectivity for the conversion of alkanes to alkenes of over 50%. The catalyst may be incorporated in a reactor such as a fluidized bed reactor or a single pass reactor.

Catalyst and systems incorporating the catalyst

The invention provides a method for depositing catalytic clusters on a surface, the method comprising confining the surface to a controlled atmosphere; contacting the surface with catalyst containing vapor for a first period of time; removing the vapor from the controlled atmosphere; and contacting the surface with a reducing agent for a second period of time so as to produce catalyst-containing nucleation sites.
