In a broad form the present invention relates to a method for oxidation of a species comprising sulfur in an oxidation state below +4, such as HS, CS, COS and Svapor, to SOsaid method comprising the step of contacting the gas and an oxidant with a catalytically active material consisting of one or more elements taken from the group consisting of V, W, Ce, Mo, Fe, Ca, Mg, Si, Ti and Al in elemental, oxide, carbide or sulfide form, optionally with the presence of other elements in a concentration below 1 wt %, at a temperature between 180&#xb0; C. and 290&#xb0; C., 330&#xb0; C., 360&#xb0; C. or 450&#xb0; C., with the associated benefit of such a temperature being highly energy effective, and the benefit of said elements having a low tendency to form sulfates under the conditions, with the related benefit of an increased stability of the catalytically active material. The other elements present may be catalytically active noble metals or impurities in the listed materials.

Process and apparatus for sulphuric acid production

Process for the production of concentrated sulphuric acid and oleum from feed gases with up to 70% SO+SO(SO) and a content of HO corresponding to HO/SOmolar ratios up to 1.6, particularly in the range of 0.5 to 1.6 upstream an intermediate sulphuric acid condenser comprising an air recycling loop with water addition. The process of the invention minimizes power consumption of the sulphuric acid plant by reducing the consumption of cooling water and obtaining maximum possible recovery of the heat liberated in the process for production of high pressure steam for power production. Up to 99.95% of the SOin the feed gas can be recovered as typically 98.5-99.5 wt % concentrated sulphuric acid and/or oleum with up to 25 wt % SO.

Process for condensation of sulphuric acid vapours to produce sulphuric acid

A process for continuous production of ammonium thiosulphate, (NH)SO(ATS) from NH, HS and SOis disclosed. A first feed stream comprising HO, HS and NHwith a molar HS:NHratio &#x3c;0.4 is partially condensed to form a condensate. The condensate is contacted with a third feed gas comprising HS and the gas stream comprising NHand HS is passed to a mixing device where the gas stream is dissolved in water drained off from an aerosol filter. A second feed gas stream comprising approximately &#x2154; mole SOper mole of NHcontained in the first feed stream is passed to a SOabsorber. The aqueous solution produced in mixing device is contacted with the SOabsorber.

A process for continuous production of ammonium thiosulphate from H.sub.2 S, SO.sub.2, and NH.sub.3 comprising steps of producing in a first absorption step a solution of ammonium hydrogen sulphite by contacting a first gas stream comprising S0.sub.2 with NH.sub.3 and an aqueous solution comprising ammonium hydrogen sulphite in one or more absorbers connected in series and withdrawing a vent gas from one of the absorbers, passing the solution produced in the first absorption step to a second absorption step in which a second gas stream comprising H.sub.2 S is contacted with NH.sub.3 and an aqueous solution of ammonium thiosulphate thereby producing a solution being rich in ammonium thiosulphate.

A process for desulfurization of a gaseous substrate containing O.sub.2, SO.sub.2, SO.sub.3, H.sub.2 SO.sub.4, H.sub.2 S, CS.sub.2, COS and/or organic sulfur-containing components. The combustible components are oxidized catalytically into H.sub.2 O, CO.sub.2, and SO.sub.2. The SO.sub.2 is further oxidized catalytically into SO.sub.3, which in the presence in the substrate of at least an equivalent amount of H.sub.2 O in the gas, is further hydrated and condensed as sulfuric acid. The process is conducted in two towers that are connected in series, each tower being loaded with a layer of inert material below a layer of oxidization catalyst preferably consisting of an acid resistant material with parallel, vertical channels. A preferred catalyst includes vanadium oxide supported on a silica carrier material and promoted with alkali metals. The process includes reversing a direction of gas flow in the towers after periods of about 1-40 minutes. The temperature in layers of the oxidation catalyst, preferably consisting of an acid resistant material with parallel, vertical channgels in the towers is maintained in a range of 300-500.degree. C. The temperature of the gas stream leaving the towers is at least 50.degree. C. below the H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 dew point of the process gas after oxidation of the sulfur content in the feed gas. Condensed sulfuric acid is drained off from the bottom of each of the towers.

Process for the desulphurization of gaseous substrate

The present invention provides a process for concentrating sulphuric acids with concentrations of 90% to 98% H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 and temperatures of 160.degree. C. to 270.degree. C. into sulphuric acid with concentrations of 96% to 98.8% H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 by contacting the acid countercurrently in a packed tower with hot air or with hot process gas containing up to 6% SO.sub.3 and up to 30% H.sub.2 O and with inlet temperatures to the tower of 350.degree. C to 600.degree. C. The H.sub.2 O and H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 evaporated in the tower is contained in a stream of offgas from which the H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 thereafter is removed by controlled condensation The invention relates, in particular, to concentrating the product acid from wet gas sulphuric acid plants in which condensation of H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 takes place in the presence of excess H.sub.2 O in the process gas in air cooled, vertical glass tubes.

Process for concentration of sulphuric acid

A process for selective catalytic reduction of NOx in exhaust gases at temperatures of 200-600.degree. C. A spray of droplets containing a reductant is injected into a duct through an atomizing nozzle and into an exhaust gas. The exhaust gas, loaded with the spray droplets, is passed through the spaces between the plates of a series of stacks of parallel plates. The plates of each stack in the series are positioned at an angle relative to the walls of the gas duct and any adjacent stack, forcing the exhaust gas to pass through the stacks in a zig-zag flow pattern. After passing through the last stack, the exhaust gas then passes through a layer of monolithic catalyst for selective reduction of NOx by NH.sub.3 with channels parallel to the walls of the duct. Substantially all the spray droplets impinge on the walls of the plates, and the diameter of the droplets are larger than the critical diameter at which they are caused to touch the walls each time the direction of gas-flow is deflected upon passing through the stacks.
