A header for a heat exchanger includes a first and a second cylindrical fluid manifold extending in parallel. Each of the first and second manifolds have tube slots that extend through an arcuate wall section of the manifold. A thickened wall section of the header having a generally triangular wall section is bounded by the first and second fluid manifolds and by a planar outer surface of the header. An aperture extends through the thickened wall section to provide a fluid communication pathway between the first and second cylindrical fluid manifolds.

Heat exchanger header

A heat exchanger () is provided and in a highly preferred form is an EGR cooler () having first and second passes (A,B) that are connected to an inlet/outlet manifold () by a pair of corresponding thermal expansion joints () to allow differential thermal expansion between the various structural components of the heat exchanger ().

A heat exchanger with a plurality of stacked flat tubes and a collecting tank having a wall extending around the entire periphery of, and connected to, the end of the stacked flat tubes. A first medium may be distributed through the collecting tank and flat tubes. Internal inserts are in the flat tubes, with the inserts being bonded between the broad sides of the tubes and, in the region of connection of the tubes to the collecting tank, being configured to compensate for length changes in the stacking direction caused by temperature changes, as by recesses in connectors such as wave flanks or by corrugated wave flanks. The flat tubes with inserts such as described may be separately provided for use in manufacture of heat exchangers.

Heat exchanger with flat tubes

A header construction intended for use in a heat exchanger () employed in a relatively high pressure application includes an array of generally parallel tube runs () with fins () extending between adjacent ones of the tube runs. At least one relatively flat header plate () has a plurality of tube slots () for receiving ends () of the tubes () and a tank () is mounted to and sealed to the header plate (). Peripheral flanges () are located about tube slots () in the headers and a header reinforcing plate () is bonded to the header plate () oppositely of the tank (). Stiffening beads in the form of flanges () are located on the header reinforcing plate () between openings () therein through which the tubes () pass and extend away from the header plate ().

Internally mounted radial flow, high pressure, intercooler for a rotary compressor machine

A compact rotary compressor unit within internal intercooling includes a rotary shaft () with at least one compressor wheel () mounted thereon for rotation therewith. The compressor wheel () has an inlet end () of relatively small diameter and a radial discharge end () of relatively large diameter. A nominally donut-shaped intercooling heat exchanger () is centered about the shaft () to receive compressed air from the compressor wheel and cool the same. Both the compressor wheel () and the heat exchanger () are confined in a housing ().

Formed disk plate heat exchanger

A highly efficient parallel flow evaporator is provided by combining a pair of identical units (10), (12) wherein each includes a pair of identical, parallel, spaced headers (40) each having slots (44) receiving the ends of identical flattened tubes (22). Identical tanks (42) are bonded to each of the headers (40) and each has an identical central flat surface (52) and an identical, centrally located port (60). Fins (26) extend between adjacent tubes (22) in each unit (10), (12) and an inlet/outlet fixture (32) is bonded to the flat surfaces (52) of one pair of tanks (42) defined by adjacent tanks (42) of both of the units (10),(12). A cross-over fixture (30) is bonded to the flat surfaces (52) of the other pair of tanks (42) defined by the remaining tanks (42) of both of the units (10),(12). The invention minimizes the number of geometrically different parts, provides an improved distributor (140) for refrigerant, provides an improved inlet passage (108) that provides a uniform stream of refrigerant to the distributor (140) and provides for the direction of refrigerant emanating from the cross-over fixture (30) in a direction parallel to the tubes (22) for improved uniformity.

High efficiency, small volume evaporator for a refrigerant

Restrictions on the major dimension of flattened tubes used in heat exchangers employing oval shaped, two piece headers/tank assemblies can be minimized in a construction including a plurality of flattened tubes (14) each having a minor dimension and a major dimension transverse thereto and extending in spaced parallel relation. Fins (16) are in heat exchange relation with the tubes (14) and a pair of spaced, parallel, elongated headers/tank assemblies (10, 12) are provided between which the tubes (14) extend. At least one of the headers/tank assemblies (10, 12) is a multiple piece header/tank assembly including a header piece (20) and a separate tank piece (22). The header piece (20) is elongated and provided with a plurality of slots (28) sized to receive ends of the tubes (14) with the tube major dimensions being generally transverse to the direction of elongation of the header piece (20). The header piece further includes a peripheral flange (24). The tank piece (22) is elongated, concave and has a peripheral flange (44) nested within the peripheral flange (22) of the header piece (20). The two are bonded together to form a unitary tubular structure and the peripheral flange (42) of the tank piece has alternating crests (52) and valleys (50) with the valleys (50) having a width greater than the tube minor dimension and being aligned with the tube ends. As a consequence, a flow to the tubes (14) is not obstructed by the peripheral flange (42) on the tank piece because of the valleys (50) therein.

Header and tank construction for a heat exchanger

Thermal and pressure related fatigue or stress in the header plates (26, 28) of a charge air cooler is avoided in a structure wherein the header plates (26, 28) are formed of a channel having a central web (80) flanked by legs (82, 84) and provided with apertures (86) for receiving the ends of tubes (36). The apertures (86), on the side thereof between the legs (82, 84), are provided with peripheral flanges (88, 90, 92, 94) and on the opposite side are substantially surrounded by concave camming surfaces (96, 98).
