Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having a core refractive index profile in which the profile parameters are selected to provide an attenuation minimum. A set of profiles having the same general shape and dimensions is shown to have a group of profiles contained in a sub-set which exhibit a minimum of attenuation as compared to the remaining members of the set. The members of the sub-set have been found to have the lowest effective group index, n , and the lowest change in &bgr; under waveguide fiber bending.

Low attenuation optical waveguide

Variations in properties, e.g., radius or refractive index, of the waveguide fiber core provide a total dispersion which varies along the length of the waveguide. The algebraic sum of products of length times total dispersion is controlled to a pre-selected value for each waveguide fiber which makes up a system link Proper choice of total dispersion variation magnitude and sub-length results in a system link wherein a signal travels only short distances in waveguide portions having total dispersion near zero. However, the variation of the total dispersion provides a system link which has a pre-selected dispersive effect on the signal over a selected wavelength range. The dispersive effect on the signal can be chosen to be essentially zero. A number of techniques for fabricating DM fiber are also disclosed.

An optical waveguide fiber with a core region 1 and a cladding region 2, wherein said cladding region 2 includes an outer cladding region 3 is disclosed wherein said outer cladding region 3 is a very thin (less than 1 .mu.m in thickness) layer of TiO.sub.2 --SiO.sub.2 glass which results in a substantial reduction in the number of fiber breaks resulting from the fiber drawing process and having a predetermined TiO.sub.2 concentration less than or equal to about 10 wt. %. Optical waveguide fiber with very thin titania-silica outer cladding

A method of making an optical waveguide fiber with a fatigue resistant TiO.sub.2 -SiO.sub.2 outer cladding, and a substantially glass blank for drawing into such fiber, wherein a glass soot TiO.sub.2 -SiO.sub.2 outermost layer, with an initial TiO.sub.2 concentration greater than 10.5 wt. %, is deposited on a preform, and the preform is exposed to an atmosphere of chlorine and oxygen at a high temperature, and the resulting TiO.sub.2 concentration in the outermost layer of the TiO.sub.2 -SiO.sub.2 outer cladding of the substantially glass blank is less than the initial TiO.sub.2 concentration. In the glass blank form, the outermost layer includes a substantial volume percentage of crystalline phases and in the fiber form, the outermost layer includes inhomogeneities.

An optical waveguide fiber with a fatigue resistant TiO.sub.2 -SiO.sub.2 outer cladding including a cylindrical outermost layer with TiO.sub.2 concentration greater than 10.5 wt. % and thickness less than 3 .mu.m. The fiber may include a two layer outer cladding with higher TiO.sub.2 concentration in the outer layer. The outer cladding may include a plurality of inhomogeneities dispersed in a TiO.sub.2 -SiO.sub.2 matrix.
