Recycled or brown paper board is provided having a surface with a coating having one or more layers, at least one coating layer comprising one or more copolymers selected from the group consisting of styrene-acrylic-based copolymers, styrene-butadiene-based copolymers, and mixtures thereof, wherein the average Tg of the copolymers present in the coating layer is 25&#xb0; C. or greater and the average polymer particle size of the copolymers present in the coating layer is 130 nm or greater. A method of producing a coated recycled paper board or brown paper board and a coating composition are also provided.

Recycled or brown paper board and methods of making same

Disclosed herein are, for instance, coated substrates comprising cellulose-based substrates with surface-treated aqueous-based polymer coatings. In some embodiments, the aqueous-based polymer coatings are surface-treated using corona treatment. Methods of making and using the same are also disclosed.

Coated substrate comprising a surface-treated, aqueous-based polymer coating and methods of making and using the same

This disclosure relates to barrier compositions. The barrier composition can comprise a copolymer formed by polymerizing monomers comprising derived from a vinyl aromatic monomer and a second monomer selected from the group consisting of butadiene, alkyl (meth)acrylates, and mixtures thereof, and a solid grade oligomer. In some embodiments, the vinyl aromatic monomer and the second monomer are polymerized in the presence of the solid grade oligomer. Paper products and methods of making the paper products comprising the barrier composition are also described herein. The barrier compositions disclosed herein can be used to impart water, moisture, grease, oil, and/or oxygen resistance to the paper product.

Barrier compositions

A paper coating or binding formulation comprises an aqueous polymer dispersion comprising a copolymer obtained by polymerization of an unsaturated monomer and a carbohydrate derived compound and a tetrasulfonate-based fluorescent whitening agent. The carbohydrate derived compound can be selected from the group consisting of dextrins, maltodextrins, and mixtures thereof. Methods of preparing a paper coating or binding formulation and improving the whitening properties of paper are also provided. Furthermore, paper including a copolymer obtained by polymerization of an unsaturated monomer and a carbohydrate derived compound and a tetrasulfonate-based fluorescent whitening agent is also disclosed.

Paper coating or binding formulations and methods of making and using same

Paper coating or binding formulations are provided that comprise aqueous copolymer emulsions including copolymers derived from one or more copolymerizable surfactants of formula I and one or more monomers. The paper coating or binding formulations can include one or more mineral fillers, coating pigments, or mixtures thereof, wherein the total weight concentration of the one or more mineral fillers, coating pigments, or mixtures thereof is 65% or higher, based on the total weight of the composition. Paper products coated with the paper coating or binding formulations, methods of making the paper coating or binding formulations, and methods of making the coated paper products are also disclosed.

Copolymer compositions and methods for making these compositions are described. The copolymers include a vinyl aromatic monomer; a second monomer, and a biobased monomer. The second monomer is selected from the group consisting of butadiene, alkyl acrylates, alkyl methacrylates, and mixtures thereof. Examples of biobased monomers useful in the compositions include isobornyl acrylate, isobornyl methacrylate, tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate, tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate, lauryl acrylate, lauryl methacrylate, and mixtures thereof. The compositions described herein can be used for binder or coating compositions and can include coating pigments, mineral fillers, and other additives.

Copolymers including biobased monomers and methods of making and using same

Polymer emulsion formulations suitable for use as binders or in coating systems generally are provided. The formulations comprise a copolymer derived from one or more vinyl ester monomers of the formula I, one or more copolymerizable surfactants of formula II, and optionally one or more additional co-monomers. Gypsum boards, methods of making gypsum boards, and methods of making the copolymer are also disclosed.

Polymer emulsion coating or binding formulations and methods of making and using same

A method comprising: (I) providing a composition; (II) applying the composition to a paper substrate; and (III) forming a paper coating on the paper substrate; wherein the composition comprises a blend of polymers, wherein the blend of polymers comprises a vinyl aromatic-acrylic polymer and a vinyl aromatic-diene polymer, wherein the vinyl aromatic-acrylic polymer comprises a reaction product of vinyl aromatic and an alkyl (meth)acrylate, and the vinyl aromatic-diene polymer comprises a reaction product of vinyl aromatic and a conjugated diene, wherein, based on a solids weight of all polymers in the blend of polymers, the vinyl aromatic-acrylic polymer is present in the blend of polymers in an amount from 50% to about 95% and the vinyl aromatic-diene polymer is present in an amount from about 5% to 50%.
