An apparatus is described for recording and playing back video frames with associated audio signals for use with a conventional television display. A magnetic loop is employed to store video frames for display with associated audio information being placed as a separate frame on another magnetic medium. A full program of video and audio frames may be received and selected from a remote transmitter and appropriately located on a magnetic medium for sequential display on the television display. A first embodiment uses a cassette tape with a video loop for storage and playback of a program. A second embodiment uses a pair of multiple track belts for program storage and playback. Pilot signals are employed to precisely store the video frames on the video loop and to automatically sequence the display and sound projection of the multiple video and associated audio frames.

Video recorder and playback apparatus

In a first embodiment a still picture video program composing and playback system is described whereby a plurality of still picture programs can be recorded on a common video recording such as a video tape. A composing operation involves the assembly of audio narration for the programs on separate tracks with cue signals which signify successively different picture displays being recorded on a separate track. The composing of these audio programs and still pictures on a common video tape is obtained with control logic responsive to played back cue signals. The recording of still pictures is obtained with a slide projector and television camera, both of which are synchronized by the control logic to record video frames and cue signals on the video tape. In a second embodiment still pictures and a motion sequence for different video programs are interleaved and recorded on a common medium. In a playback system a temporary video frame storage device is used to retain and display a still picture until a decoded cue signal causes a video frame replacement in the storage device. As described in a preferred embodiment, monochrome (y) and chroma signals are separated and separately recorded for enhanced picture display resolution. A performance learning system is described for a program such as a musical score, a play, or vocal performance. An ensemble rendition of a program is recorded on a first track of a magnetic tape with a particular performance, which normally is a part of the program, being omitted from the prerecorded ensemble rendition. A control track is provided, along side the ensemble rendition on the magnetic tape, with control signals representative of preselected stop locations separating learning segments on a visual representation of the omitted performance. A student may record a performance on a third track of the tape while an exemplary performance of the omitted performance such as may be formed by a professional or teacher is recorded on a fourth track. A record/playback apparatus is provided with a track selection network to enable the playback of a desired track or combination of tracks. A backtrack network is provided to enable a student, who is learning the omitted performance, to conveniently repeat previous learning segments by automatically returning the tape to the desired learning segment. The stop control signals may be formed of intelligible words when the tape is played back in a first direction, to orally identify the stop locations on the visual representations of the omitted performance. When the tape is moved in an opposite backtrack direction, the stop control signals operate to stop the tape at the desired previous learning segment. A system for forming the prerecorded magnetic program learning tape is described.
