The invention relates to a wide-wheel grinding machine having at least one grinding head attached to a machine frame by a cross arm and having a drive motor for the grinding head which is mounted at one end of the cross arm. The machine is made of non-metal castings and damps both the drive and grinding vibrations from the grinding head as close to the source as possible. Multi-head machines are assembled in accordance with the number of grinding heads on the basis of frame modules which are similar in shape.

An apparatus for stuffer box crimping a synthetic filament thread includes a thread inlet duct for aspiring and guiding synthetic filament threads to a stuffer box. The apparatus includes a flow duct, the thread inlet duct preceding the flow duct, the flow duct and the thread inlet duct having a common longitudinal axis. The apparatus is provided with a nozzle having an outlet opening merging into the flow duct, for supplying a fluid under pressure. The two or more sets of nozzles may be arranged consecutively along the longitudinal axis of the thread inlet duct and the flow duct in a direction of thread transport.

A thread treating nozzle includes two relatively movable parts (10) and (12) which may be brought into mutual contact to define a thread treating passage and which may be moved apart to permit insertion of the thread. The part (12) is an elastic plate (12) supported by a plate mounting structure (120) which includes a housing member (122) containing a pressurizable chamber (200) in which a bridge member (201) is guided freely for movement as a piston by guide walls (206). To prevent the pressure medium contained in the cylinder space from escaping via the clearance between the guide walls (206) and the bridge member (201) a seal (204) is provided. The bridge member (201) includes a base plate (202) contacting the bottom (208) of the seal (204), and bridge members (203) are fitted on plate (202) to bear against the plate (12). This permits exertion of a homogeneous pressure on the plate (12) as the chamber is pressurized, causing the plate (12) to deform and adapt to the sealing surface on the nozzle part (10) to establish a sealing contact between the two nozzle parts.

To determine thread winding parameters for reducing the rate at which deviations from a cylindrical shape are formed in thread packages being wound, thread packages are successively formed by laying thread upon a driven rotary chuck while pressing a driven rotating contact roller against the package in a manner causing a circumferential force to be transmitted therebetween. Each package is inspected for deviations from a cylindrical shape. The generation of slippage is promoted at an interface between the contact roller and package. The amount of promoted slippage is changed between the forming of successive packages to change the rate at which the deformations are formed.

A thread winder includes a revolver on which two radially spaced mandrels are disposed for supporting thread-receiving tubes. Thread is wound onto one of the tubes located in a winding position and, when that tube is filled, the thread is transferred to the other, empty tube without interrupting the thread feed, by rotating the revolver. After the filled package is moved out of the winding position, a deflecting rod is swung to deflect the thread to a position where it can be grabbed by a transferring device. Then, the deflecting rod is swung away from the thread, and the transferring device is swung out to displace the thread toward a thread catcher disposed on the empty tube (or its mandrel), whereupon the thread is severed. A thread diverter is also swung out from the transferring device to shield the empty tube from the trailing end of the severed thread extending from the filled package.

A winding machine winds threads upon a package. The machine includes a thread change mechanism for positioning the threads relative to the package. The thread change mechanism includes a thread guide member having first and second longitudinally spaced ends. The guide member is mounted for swinging movement relative to a housing of the machine by means of two swingable levers. One end of each lever is attached adjacent the first end of the thread guide member. A servo-motor is operably connected to one of the levers for swinging the thread guide member. A power transmission operably interconnects the first and second ends of the guide member for positively transmitting a swinging motion of the first end to the second end in order to effect synchronous swinging movement of the first and second ends. A limiting device retains the guide member in a thread change position but allows the guide member to be moved past the thread change position to a thread drawing-in position.

A yarn winding machine is equipped with transducer means (39) disposed in the area of the ends (33, 35) of the contact roll shaft (37) to monitor the pressing force of the contact roll (11) against the yarn package (9) being wound. The short paths between the sensors and the areas where the contact roll presses against the surface of the yarn path makes it possible to measure the downward pressure at the individual measurement points or as a whole. There are disclosed one-piece chuck structures for use in winding machines and particularly, but not exclusively, for use in high speed winding machines for the take-up of synthetic plastics filament. These one-piece chuck structures comprise a first elongated tubular portion adapted to receive one or more bobbin tubes and a second elongated tubular portion integral with the first elongated tubular portion and of reduced external diameter relative thereto. Bearings cooperate with the exterior of the second elongated tubular portion such that the first elongated tubular portion and the second elongated tubular portion are rotatable about a common longitudinal axis. Also disclosed are hollow bobbin tube-engaging elements as well as double-arm tube-positioning members which can be used with such and other chuck structures.

A yarn winding machine is equipped to compensate the sag of the spool mandrel (5) with a speedometer roll (7) which is disposed so that it can press radially against the surface of the yarn packages being wound and which is mounted so as to damp vibrations. The mounting for the speedometer roll (7) includes a peg (17) fastened on a yoke (11) which supports the speedometer roll (7). The peg (17) extends into a hole (21) in a carrier (19) for the yoke 11 and is connected to the wall of the hole (21) through O-rings (23) on the surface of the peg (17) so that it is flexible with respect to rotation.
