A composite sandwich element has at least one wall comprising phenolic resin binder and a layer of cellular polymeric foam or felt of imide polymeric material bonded thereto. In the presence of fire, the composite sandwich element has levels of heat release, flammability, smoke release and toxic gas release below predetermined levels considered suitable for use within the passenger compartment of a commercial aircraft. In preferred embodiments, there are two walls with the cellular polymeric material disposed therebetween. Preferably, the wall includes glass fibers in web form, with the polymeric resin binder serving as an adhesive or reinforcing binder. A barrier film, e.g. metallic or polymeric, may be included to render the composite sandwich element impermeable to air.

A method of applying a wettant to an air laid, non-woven, fibrous filter web or other filter media includes the steps of atomizing the wettant into relatively small particles having a diameter equal to or less than about 1/2 of the diameter of the smallest fiber in the web or mat, and entraining the particles in a carrier air stream. The carrier air stream is forced through the batt at a face velocity substantially greater than the face velocity that the filter media sees when it is used to filter contaminant particles in use. Accordingly, dispersal of the wettant throughout the batt is assured, and migration of the particles into the effluent air stream when the batt is used in filtering is reduced or eliminated.

A liquid filter cartridge includes a centertube and a filtering media wrapped circumferentially about the centertube to provide a spirally wrapped media. The media includes a surface-type filtering medium having a predetermined porosity and a depth-type filtering medium which is disposed between the wraps of the surface-type filtering medium. The surface-type filtering medium is a filtering paper, and the depth-type filtering medium is an air laid batt which includes structural fibers tending to support the surface-type medium and to prevent the latter from collapsing under dynamic flow conditions. The depth-type medium is porous and offers little resistance to fluid flow, so that the liquid to be filtered can easily flow both radially from one of the layers of the surface-type medium to the adjacent layer, and also can flow circumferentially to thereby permit access for the liquid to be filtered over the entire area of the inner wraps of the surface-type medium.

A liquid filter includes a housing having a pressure chamber portion in which a filtering media is carried and a support engaging portion which attaches the housing to the engine upon which the filter is mounted. The support engaging portion includes a radially projecting section which mounts the usual gasket which effects a seal between the housing and a sealing surface on the engine. The radially projecting portion cooperates with the portion of the housing containing the filter to define a circumferentially extending groove therebetween, which isolates the gasket from the distorting forces generated in the housing by hydraulic pressure.

A liquid filter for an internal combustion engine includes a filter cartridge housed within an outer shell closed by an end member. The end member provides a central outlet opening and circumferentially spaced inlet openings circumscribing the outlet opening and spaced radially therefrom. An annular fixture is mounted on the end closure between the outlet opening and the inlet openings and supports a circumferentially extending seal. The seal includes a central portion which seals between the fixture and the cartridge, and also includes a first radially projecting deflectable portion which prevents drainback of liquid filtrate through the inlet openings upon engine shutoff, and also includes a second deflectable portion which controls bypass flow. The fixture further includes axially projecting members which are engaged by the filter cartridge to hold the latter in fluid-tight engagement with the valve member.

A pleated paper filter element (10) has a fluid-permeable foamed-plastic shield (16) formed on one of its faces to firmly and accurately position the adjacent folds of filter media. The shield (16) is formed in situ and bonds to the filter media without the use of an intermediate adhesive so as to form a unitary structure. A method of making such a filter involves disposing a foamable liquid plastic (34) near a pleated paper filter unit and foaming the plastic. Prior to solidification, the plastic is effective to bond directly to the filter media. A mold (22) for making such a filter element includes a receptacle (28) for receiving a quantity of liquid plastic and a filter unit and for holding them in the proper relation while the plastic is foamed. The mold receptacle includes projections (30) which form perforations (18) in the solidified plastic and which provide for fluid flow communication through the filter element. The plastic may be of the open-cell fluid-permeable type to permit fluid flow communication through the shield to the filter element.

A heavy duty automotive air cleaner for use in environments having high contaminant concentrations includes a housing carrying a vane-type centrifugal separator and a removable filter cartridge. The removable filter cartridge includes a pleated paper filtering medium and a fibrous, depth-type filtering medium. A pair of flow paths are defined through the housing between the inlet and outlet thereof. One of the flow paths extends through the depth-type media and the pleated paper medium, and the other flow path extends through the centrifugal vane-type separator and the pleated paper medium. The depth-type fibrous medium is placed upstream from the pleated paper medium, and is adapted to remove relatively fine particles from the incoming air stream as the heavier particles are centrifuged outwardly by the vane-type separator.
