Apparatus and method for correlating a received communication of a known sequence over a wireless channel through the use of a finite impulse response (FIR) filter having a small number of taps to reduce hardware requirement by as much as one-half that of conventional techniques while obtaining amplitude degradation which is no worse than experienced when employing conventional techniques.

A Node-B/base station has an access burst detector. The access burst detector comprises at least one antenna for receiving signals from users and a pool of reconfigurable correlators. Each correlator correlates an inputted access burst code at an inputted code phase with an inputted antenna output. An antenna controller selectively couples any output of the at least one antenna to an input of any of the correlators. A code controller provides to an input of each correlator an access burst code. The code controller controls the inputted code phase of each controller. A sorter/post processor sorts output energy levels of the correlators.

A wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU) and methods are used in a wireless communication system to process sampled received signals to establish and/or maintain wireless communications. A selectively controllable coherent accumulation unit produces power delay profiles (PDPs). A selectively controllable post processing unit passes threshold qualified magnitude approximation values and PDP positions to a device such as a rake receiver to determine receive signal paths.

A Node-B/base station receiver comprises at least one antenna for receiving signals. Each finger of a pool of reconfigurable Rake fingers recovers a multipath component of a user and is assigned a code of the user, a code phase of the multipath component and an antenna of the at least one antenna. An antenna/Rake finger pool interface provides each finger of the Rake pool an output of the antenna assigned to that Rake finger. A combiner combines the recovered multipath components for a user to produce data of the user.

A Node-B/base station has a path searcher and at least one antenna for receiving signals from users. The path searcher comprises a set of correlators. Each correlator correlates an inputted user code with an inputted antenna output of the at least one antenna. An antenna controller selectively couples any output of the at least one antenna to an input of each correlator of the set of correlators. A code phase controller selects a user code for input into the set of correlators. Each delay of a series of delays delays the selected user code by a predetermined amount and each correlator of the set of correlators receives a different code phase delay of the selected user code. A sorter and path selector sorts the output energy levels of each correlator of the sets of correlators and produces a path profile for a user based on the sorted output energy levels.

A Viterbi equalizer for equalization of a data signal transmitted via a channel that is subject to interference has at least one add-compare-select unit (ACS), which carries out an ACS operation for each channel state in a time step k. Furthermore, the equalizer has a unit for calculating metric increments in advance and for storing the metric increments. The calculation unit calculates in advance the metric increments relating to all the transitions from a state which can be predetermined in the time step k to the states which can be reached by the transitions in the time step k+1. The metric increments are retained in an output memory such that they can be called up for utilization in the ACS unit.

A method for channel equalization of received data includes steps of: receiving the received data in a received data packet; calculating filter setting coefficients for an input filter and calculating equalizer setting coefficients for an equalizer; setting the input filter using the filter setting coefficients and setting the equalizer using the equalizer setting coefficients; equalizing the received data using the input filter and using the equalizer; determining channel parameters for the transmission channel from the received data X; storing the channel parameters in a data field; and performing the step of calculating the filter setting coefficients for the input filter and calculating the equalizer setting coefficients for the equalizer by performing a GIVENS rotation of the data field.

In a radio receiver, an equalizer generates reliability information in the form of soft decision information indicating probabilities that a data symbol received by the radio receiver is based on a specific transmitted value. A bit error rate estimator obtains bit error rate information regarding the bit error rate of the received signal, corresponding to the received data symbols, by evaluating the reliability information.

An equalizer of a radio receiver for generating reliability information (q) that specifies probabilities of a received data symbol (z) being based on a particular transmitted value. The reliability information (q) is determined for each received data symbol (z) by evaluating trellis state transitions through use of a particular metric, both trellis-based symbols and decision-feedback symbols being evaluated. The decision-feedback symbols used are state-independent symbols that have previously been decided by means of a hard decision.
