A photonics reservoir computing system is described. The system is configured for propagating at least one optical signal so as to create resulting radiation signals in the output channels. The photonics reservoir computing system further comprises weighting elements for weighting signals from the output channels, and at least one optical detector for optically detecting signals from the output channels. The system is adapted for estimating signals from the output channels through an output of the optical detector.

Training of photonic reservoir computing systems

A passive photonics reservoir computing system comprises an optical waveguide based structure comprising a plurality of discrete nodes and a plurality of passive waveguide interconnections between the nodes for propagating the at least one photonic signal between the nodes, in which each discrete node is adapted for passively relaying the at least one photonic wave over the passive waveguide interconnections connected thereto, wherein the optical waveguide based structure comprises at least one multimode Y-junction configured for connecting three waveguides using a taper section wherein the taper section is not perfectly adiabatic. A training scheme uses a passive photonics computing system.

Multimode reservoir

An object classification system for classifying objects is described. The system comprises an imaging region adapted for irradiating an object of interest, an arrayed detector, and a mixing unit configured for mixing the irradiation stemming from the object of interest by reflecting or scattering on average at least three times the irradiation after its interaction with the object of interest and prior to said detection.

Object classification system and method

A device for extracting at least one object characteristic of an object () is presented, the device comprising: a light sensor () for recording a hologram of an object and a processing unit () coupled to the light sensor and configured for extracting at least one object characteristic from the hologram; wherein the processing unit is configured for extracting the at least one object characteristic from a section of the hologram without reconstructing an image representation of the object. Further, a device () for sorting an object (), a method for identifying an object and a method for sorting objects is presented.

Holographic device and object sorting system

A photonics integrated device for coupling radiation using flood illumination is disclosed. The photonic integrated device comprises an integrated waveguide, a coupler grating at the surface of the device for coupling radiation from said flood illumination towards the integrated waveguide, and a grating for blocking, reflecting or redirecting radiation away from the coupler grating at the surface of the device. The grating for blocking, reflecting or redirecting radiation away from the coupler grating thereby is positioned relative to the coupler grating so as to prevent at least some radiation from said flood illumination, impinging at the grating for blocking, reflecting or redirecting radiation away from the coupler grating and thus impinging at a position of said surface away from the coupling grating, from being reflected within the device towards the coupler grating.

System for coupling radiation into a waveguide

A photonics integrated system is disclosed, comprising a substrate, an integrated interferometer integrated in the substrate and being configured for receiving radiation from a radiation source, and an integrated spectral filter integrated in the substrate and being configured for receiving radiation from the interferometer. The integrated interferometer has a period and the integrated spectral filter has a bandwidth such that the period of the integrated interferometer is smaller than the bandwidth of the integrated spectral filter. The integrated spectral filter has a periodic transfer characteristic with a period and the system has a bandwidth such that the period of the periodic transfer characteristic of the integrated spectral filter is larger than the bandwidth of the system.

Photonics integrated interferometric system and method

A method comprising providing an input signal to at least one input node of a computing reservoir by temporally encoding the input signal by modulating the at least one photonic wave as function of the input signal is described. The method further comprises propagating the at least one photonic wave via passive guided or unguided propagation between discrete nodes of the computing reservoir, in which each discrete node is adapted for passively relaying the at least one photonic wave over the passive interconnections connected thereto. The method also comprises obtaining a plurality of readout signals, in which each readout signal is determined by a non-linear relation to the at least one photonic wave in at least one readout node of the computing reservoir, and combining this plurality of readout signals into an output signal by taking into account a plurality of training parameters.

Reservoir computing using passive optical systems

A sensing device for sensing a substance includes a photonics integrated circuit having a resonator element that supports two different radiation modes, e.g. radiation modes of different polarisation, at a predetermined resonance wavelength. The resonator element is configured to convert a phase change or amplitude change experienced by the two different radiation modes upon formation of a layer of receptor molecules onto a sensing surface of the device into a resonance wavelength shift for the two different radiation modes. The sensing device also includes a detection unit arranged to detect the resonance wavelength shift for the two different radiation modes. The detection unit includes a processor that is configured to derive from the detected resonance wavelength shifts for the two different radiation modes, a layer thickness and refractive index of the layer of receptor molecules.

Methods and systems for sensing

Quantifying a refractive index of a test medium by obtaining spectral data representative for an optical signal being modulated with an optical transfer characteristics of a photonic sensor, the modulation being obtained by combining modulation of a first electromagnetic wave component in an optical filter element with a first periodic transfer spectrum having a first free spectral range and modulation of a second electromagnetic wave component in an optical filter element with a second periodic transfer spectrum having a second free spectral range being different from the first free spectral range. A relative is change induced in the second periodic transfer spectrum by bringing the test medium in proximity with the optical filter element with the second periodic transfer spectrum. The refractive index of the test medium is quantified by determining a wavelength offset of an envelope signal in said spectral data.

Vernier photonic sensor data-analysis

A coupling element includes a first stage having a dielectric waveguide that is transitioned to a waveguide having a sequence of resonators with a fixed period. A second stage transitions the waveguide to a photonic crystal waveguide by gradually bringing closer at an angle the cladding bulk of the photonic crystal to the waveguide.
