Esters of general formula R&#x2014;COOR, where R=9 to 23 C alkyl and R=methyl, ethyl, n-propyl or i-propyl are suitable as coalescing agents, in particular for the production of all types of coatings from an aqueous polymer or latex dispersion.

Use of Esters as Coalescing Agent

The disclosure relates to the use of compounds of specific structure as defoaming wetting agents for aqueous coating systems, for example paints and varnishes. The disclosure is more particularly related to methods of reducing the surface tension and/or increasing the density of an aqueous coating system, which methods include adding alcohol propoxylates to an aqueous coating system. The alcohol propoxylates have the general structure R&#x2014;O&#x2014;(PO)H, in which R is a saturated alkyl radical having 7 to 10 C atoms, PO is a propylene oxide unit, and x is a number in the range from 4 to 6. The resulting aqueous coating composition has good wetting properties, but is low in foam, so it does not disrupt processing operations of the coating system.

Suggested are oil-based agrochemical compositions with increased viscosity, comprising (a) biocides, (b) hydrophobic carriers, and (c) polymers selected from the group consisting of poly(meth)acrylates, polymaleates and polyfumarates.

A method for making a defoaming coalescent including the steps of: providing a coalescent carrier and one or more defoamer-active components; and combining the carrier and defoamer-active components is also provided. A water-based composition including a polymer latex or a polymer dispersion; and a defoaming coalescent is also provided.
