Methods and apparatuses for a network element having DHCP proxy functionality are described. According to one embodiment, an exemplary method includes receiving, at a network element, a request for an IP address from a subscriber, in response to the request, on behalf of the subscriber, communicating with one or more IP address providers over a network to process the request, and responding to the subscriber with respect to the request as if the network element is an IP address provider, on behalf of the one or more IP address providers.

DHCP proxy in a subscriber environment

In one embodiment, a method comprises receiving a request to modify a subscriber connection to a network element. The method also includes modifying attributes of the subscriber connection, within a memory of the network element, without disconnecting the subscriber connection from the network element.

Dynamic modification of a subscriber connection

Techniques for minimizing packet loss of multicast traffic stream when a failure occurs are described herein. In one embodiment of the invention, a network element separately joins a multicast group through a first and second path respectively. During uninterrupted operation, the network element processes the packets of the multicast traffic stream it receives through the first path and drops the packets of the equivalent multicast traffic stream it receives through the second path. Upon an interruption of the packets of the multicast traffic stream being received through the first path, the network element transitions to processing the packets of the equivalent multicast traffic stream it receives through the second path. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.

Method and apparatus for providing resiliency in multicast networks

A database server stores in a subscriber record one or more attributes of an active subscriber connection coupling a computing device associated with the subscriber, including a data rate attribute. The database server receives a request to modify one or more of the attributes of the active subscriber connection including at least to modify the data rate attribute. The database server modifies the at least one of the attributes including modifying at least the data rate attribute and transmits the at least one modified attribute including at least the modified data rate attribute for the active subscriber connection to the network element to cause the network element to modify a corresponding attribute without disconnecting the subscriber connection from the network element.

Techniques for providing resilient multicast traffic processing in a network element are described herein. In one embodiment of the invention, a network element separately joins equivalent multicast traffic streams at a first and second interface respectively. During uninterrupted operation, the network element processes the packets of the multicast traffic stream it receives at the first interface and drops the packets of the equivalent multicast traffic stream it receives at the second interface. Upon an interruption of the packets of the multicast traffic stream being received at the first interface, the network element transitions to processing the packets of the equivalent multicast traffic stream it receives at the second interface. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.

A network element modifying the DHCP lease timer is described. According to one embodiment, an exemplary method includes maintaining, at a network element, DHCP lease time for one or more clients and in response to a DHCP renewal request from a client, on behalf of a DHCP server, providing DHCP renewal services to the client based on lease time information associated with the client without invoking the DHCP server.

Techniques for providing connectivity fault management (CFM) for a multi-tiered network are described herein. In one embodiment, a link trace message (LTM) is received at a provider edge (PE) router and originated from a first Ethernet node and destined to a second Ethernet node, where the PE router interfaces an Ethernet and a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) network. In response, the PE router initiates an MPLS trace session, including generating an MPLS trace message based on the LTM message to one or more MPLS nodes along a path between the first and second Ethernet nodes within the MPLS network. Subsequently, in response to one or more MPLS trace reply messages from the MPLS nodes of the MPLS network, the PE router generates a first link trace reply (LTR) message and sends the first LTR message to the first Ethernet node over the Ethernet. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.

Enhance fault tracing in multi-tiered Ethernet/MPLS network

Methods and apparatuses for process a crossconnect switchover in a network element are described. According to one embodiment, an exemplary method includes synchronizing state information regarding broadband subscriber sessions of one or more circuits of a network element between one or more hub devices of an active control card and a standby control card of the network element, and in response to a crossconnect switchover, starting up one or more sessions associated with the one or more hub devices of the standby control card using the synchronized information, such that the one or more sessions are started up as if they are restarted. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.

Switchover for broadband subscriber sessions

Techniques for multiple protocol cross layer customized QoS propagation and mapping are described herein. In one embodiment of the invention, a first QoS code of a packet is determined, the packet having a first encapsulation layer and a second encapsulation layer, the first QoS code being included within the first encapsulation of the packet. From application of a first cross layer QoS map to the first QoS code, determining that the second encapsulation layer of the packet should be used in determining a QoS classification. The reference point to the second encapsulation layer is stored. The QoS classification is determined with use of the reference point. A representation of the QoS classification is stored in a QoS descriptor and the QoS descriptor is used to influence processing of the packet. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.
