A method of communicating a notification includes identifying an issue associated with a target vehicle. A location of the target vehicle is determined, and a notification signal is broadcast from a host vehicle. The notification signal includes the location of the target vehicle and the identified issue associated with the target vehicle. The broadcast notification signal is received by the target vehicle, which determines that the received notification signal is intended for the target vehicle, by comparing a current location of the target vehicle to the location of the target vehicle included in the notification signal. When the target vehicle determines that the broadcast notification signal received from the host vehicle is intended for the target vehicle, the target vehicle may issue an alert signal to alert an occupant of the target vehicle of the issue associated with the target vehicle.

Direct vehicle to vehicle communications

A system and method of simultaneously calculating an isolation resistance and a y-capacitance of a RESS may include the steps of: injecting a first signal into a RESS; recording an output signal from the RESS in response to the injection of the first signal; multiplying the first signal with the output signal to determine a first product; multiplying a second signal with the output signal to determine a second product wherein the second signal is orthogonal to the first signal; filtering the first product to determine a first constant; filtering the second product to determine a second constant; processing the first constant to determine a y-capacitance value; and processing the second constant to determine an isolation resistance value.

High voltage bus-to-chassis isolation resistance and Y-capacitance measurement

A system and method for individually discharging battery cells in a high voltage vehicle battery. The system includes a battery controller that monitors and controls the state-of-charge of each of the battery cells and a cell balancing circuit for maintaining the charge of the cells substantially equal. The controller receives a signal from a vehicle crash detector indicating that the vehicle has been in a crash, and in response instructs the cell balancing circuit to discharge all of the battery cells.

Method for automatic energy discharge of a battery pack via internal battery electronics post crash event

A battery module that includes a plurality of battery cells having cell elements that are electrically coupled. Each cell includes a first capacitor plate pair having a first capacitor plate and a second capacitor plate at a first side of the cell element. Each cell also includes a second capacitor plate pair having a first capacitor plate and a second capacitor plate positioned at a second side of the cell element. The first capacitor plate at the second side of one cell element is capacitively coupled to the first capacitor plate at the first side of the cell element in an adjacent cell and the second capacitor plate at the second side of the one cell element is capacitively coupled to the second capacitor plate at the first side of the cell element in the adjacent cell so as to provide DC breaking.

Capacitive communication layer for cell integrated battery management system

A battery cell for an electric vehicle battery pack, including surface-applied wires to facilitate connecting the cell to a controller. Resistive or non-resistive wiring is printed onto or otherwise applied to the outer surface of the battery cell, to eliminate the need for separate jumper wires routed around or through the battery pack. A surface-applied wire is directly connected to each terminal of the battery cell, and each wire is routed on the outer surface of the cell to a location convenient for connecting a cell monitoring controller. The surface-applied wires can be made of a suitable resistive material, such that the resistance of each wire is known and the wires can be used for dissipating power during cell state of charge equalization. An insulating layer can be applied over the surface-applied wire to minimize the risk of short circuit.

Battery cell integrated measurement sensor line and equalization resistor

A battery circuit for an electric vehicle that employs a resistor that provides both a pre-charging function at system start-up and battery heating. The battery circuit includes a positive high voltage bus line electrically coupled to a positive terminal of the battery and a negative high voltage bus line electrically coupled to the negative terminal of the battery. A first end of the resistor is electrically coupled to the positive high voltage bus line, a first switch is electrically coupled between a second end of the resistor and the positive high voltage bus line and a second switch is electrically coupled between the second end of the resistor and the negative high voltage bus line. The pre-charging operation is provided when the first switch is closed and the second switch is opened and the heating function is provided when the second switch is closed and the first switch is opened.

Combined heating and pre-charging function and hardware for propulsion batteries

A method and system for identifying individual cell monitoring controllers in an electric vehicle battery pack. Several cell monitoring controllers are serially connected to each other and to a master battery pack controller via a signal line, which is also used for communicating alarm signals between the controllers. The master battery pack controller sends a wake-up signal on the signal line. The first cell monitoring controller in the signal line wiring route receives the wake-up signal and receives an identification number from the master battery pack controller. Only then does the first cell monitoring controller allow the wake-up signal to be passed along to the second cell monitoring controller, which activates and receives its identification number, and so forth. In this way, identical cell monitoring controllers can be used in a battery pack, yet each cell monitoring controller can be uniquely identified by the master battery pack controller.
