A system for accurately detecting a patient's movement during imaging procedures includes a camera for providing a stream of camera images of a part of a patient's exterior and a fiducial element mountable on part of the patient's exterior. The fiducial element is detectable in the stream of images. An image processor is configured to detect a displacement of the fiducial element based on consecutive images including in at least the stream of images and to generate an output signal indicative of the displacement. The fiducial element has an in-plane stiffness which is substantially larger than an in-plane stiffness of the part of the patient's exterior. In addition, the fiducial element and the part of the patient's exterior are provided with substantially equal outer in-plane dimensions.

System for detecting global patient movement during imaging procedures

A liquid crystal (LC) display system includes an LC panel and a backlight unit. A controller controls the LC panel to display first and a second images forming a stereoscopic pair; controls the backlight unit to only illuminate the LC panel during a first time period after pixels of the LC panel have a stable optical state according to the first image, and during a second time period after the pixels have a stable optical state according to the second image; and generates a control signal for controlling a first shutter glass of a pair of 3D shutter glasses to be in a transmissive state for enabling viewing of the pixels of the LC panel only during the first time period, and a second shutter glass to be in a transmissive state for enabling viewing of the pixels of the LC panel only during the second time period.

3D visualization

A switchable display device which is arranged to switch a portion of the display device between a single-view mode and a multi-view mode is disclosed. The display device includes: a processor to receive an information signal, the information signal having a format comprising structured elements corresponding to pixels, having respective luminance values and corresponding distance indicators; light generating unit to generate using of the information signal; optical unit to transfer the generated light in dependence of an actual view mode of the portion of the display device, the actual view mode being either the single-view mode or the multi-view mode; and wherein the processor detects the actual view mode of the portion of the display device using the respective distance indicators, and wherein the distance indicators are used for switching between the single-view and multi-view mode.

Detection of view mode

The present invention relates to a method and device () for encoding three-dimensional video data, the device comprising: a first encoder () arranged to encode multiple simultaneous views () of a scene from different viewpoints; a second encoder () arranged to encode depth information of the scene and a third encoder () arranged to encode additional information indicative of a relationship between the multiple views and the depth information and a combiner () arranged to combine the encoded information into a representation () of the three-dimensional video data. The additional information comprises a group classifier indicating whether or not the depth information and at least one of the multiple views correspond to the same source material for, when corresponding, using the depth information and the at least one of the multiple views to render further views of the scene from further different viewpoints. The invention further related to a method and device () for decoding three-dimensional video data, as well as a computer program product comprising program instructions for executing a method according to the present invention.

Image based 3D video format

A multi-view autostereoscopic display device comprises: a backlight having a plurality of backlight areas arranged in a width direction of the display device; a spatial light modulator arranged over and in registration with the backlight, the spatial light modulator having an array of display forming elements arranged in rows and columns for modulating light received from the backlight; and a view forming layer arranged over and in registration with the spatial light modulator, the view forming layer having a plurality of view forming elements arranged in the width direction of the display device, each view forming element being configured to focus modulated light from adjacent groups of the display forming elements into a plurality of views for projection towards a user in different directions. The backlight is switchable to activate different ones of the backlight areas in different portions of a driving cycle of the display device so that, in the different portions of the driving cycle, modulated light from the active backlight areas is incident on each view forming element with respective different angles of incidence. In this way, the overall viewing angle or the effective three dimensional display resolution may be increased.

Autostereoscopic display device

The invention relates to a method for acquiring a substantially complete depth map from a 3-D scene. Both depth values and derivates of depth values may be used to calculate a pixel dense depth map with the steps of acquiring partial depth map from said 3-D scene, acquiring derivates of depth information from said scene, and extending said partial depth map by adding non-relevant information to said partial depth map, creating a pixel dense full depth map being spatially consistent with both said partial depth map and said derivates of depth information.

Full depth map acquisition

A method and device for generating and/or displaying 3D images include temporarily increasing the depth of content of an image or a part of an image to a high level and afterward the depth of content is decreased to a low level. This temporary increase of the depth of content renders a large 3D effect to the image or the part of the image to which it has been applied. The actual average depth of content can be made relatively low thus reducing fatigue, while the perceived depth of content is relatively high.

Stereocopic visualisation

A switchable autostereoscopic display device comprises a display panel having an array of display pixel elements for producing a display, the display pixel elements being arranged in rows and columns. An imaging arrangement directs the output from different pixel elements to different spatial positions to enable a stereoscopic image to be viewed. The imaging arrangement is electrically switchable between at two 3D modes, wherein the effective position of the imaging arrangement is shifted laterally between the modes with respect to the display pixel elements by an amount which is a non-integer multiple of the pitch between the pixel elements. These two modes enable the resolution per mode to be increased, by adding views at inter-pixel locations, or enables the number of views to be increased.

A display device includes a display arrangement and an optical attenuator arrangement. The display arrangement has inherent non-uniformity of an output intensity across the display area. The optical attenuator arrangement is positioned in front of the display arrangement and in registration with the display area. The optical attenuator arrangement has a light attenuation characteristic that varies across the display area and is adapted to optically reduce the inherent non-uniformity of the output intensity.

Display device with homogenising attentuating filter

A method of generating a depth map () comprising depth values representing distances to a viewer, for respective pixels of an image (), is disclosed. The method comprises: computing a cost value for a first one of the pixels () of the image by combining differences between values of pixels which are disposed on a path () from the first one of the pixels () to a second one of the pixels () which belongs to a predetermined subset of the pixels of the image; and assigning a first one of the depth values corresponding to the first one of the pixels () on basis of the cost value.

Creating a depth map

The invention relates to a method for providing rendered images based on image segmentation with determining an edge within the image introduced by boundaries of image segments. To allow shift-based rendering, the invention provides determining an edge within the image introduced by boundaries of image segments, determining an edge region around the edge, determining a first displacement field for the segments, determining a second displacement field for the edge region, merging the first and the second displacement field into a third displacement field having a displacement of the first displacement field for the segments and a displacement of the second displacement field for the edge region, such that the edge region is treated as a separate object with a separate displacement, and shifting the image pixels according to the third displacement field.

Rendering images based on image segmentation

A method of generating a depth map () comprising depth values representing distances to a viewer, for respective pixels of an image (), is disclosed. The method comprises: determining a contour () on basis of pixel values of the image (), the contour comprising a collection of adjacent points; computing curvature vectors () at a number of the points; and assigning a first one of the depth values corresponding to the first one of the pixels on basis of the curvature vectors (-).

An optical system or front end for adding an optical depth information to a two-dimensional image (), wherein the optical system includes an array of optical lenses () arranged in front of the two-dimensional image (). The optical lenses have adjustable focal length (strength) in response to the optical depth information (D). An optical barrier () is arranged in front of the array of optical lenses () with optical apertures aligned with the optical lenses of the array of optical lenses (). Such optical front end can be used for 3D displays based on known 2D displays including LCD, LCOS, Plasma, and CRT type displays. Such a 3D display does not suffer from a resolution loss depending on a number of viewing angles. In embodiments adapted for pixelized 2D displays, the array of optical lenses preferably has one lens per pixel. The barrier () may be fixed or adjustable to allow adjustment of the characteristics of the added optical depth. The lenses and apertures of the barrier () may be shaped so as to be adapted for either horizontal or vertical viewing angles, or for both. The array () of lenses may be based on electro-wetting lenses, fluid-focus lenses, or lenses of bi-refringent LC materials. The array of lenses () may be formed by a stack of two or more arrays of lenses.

Optical system for 3 dimensional display

A method of scaling a three-dimensional input modelin a three-dimensional input space into a three-dimensional output modelwhich fits in a predetermined three-dimensional output spaceis disclosed. The scaling is such that a first input surfacein the three-dimensional input space, having a first distance to a viewpoint, is projected to a first output surfacein the predetermined three-dimensional output space by applying a first scaling factor and whereby a second input surfacein the three-dimensional input space, having a second distance to the viewpoint, which is smaller than the first distance, is projected to a second output surfacein the predetermined three-dimensional space, by applying a second scaling factor which is larger than the first scaling factor.
