A control signal data processing load associated with mobile terminals currently having a connection with a radio access network is regulated. The connection is terminated when the control processing cost for maintaining the connection exceeds the benefit of maintaining the connection to achieve shorter access latency. A connection activity level is determined for current connections between multiple mobile terminals and a base station. A current data processing load in the base station associated with the mobile terminal control signaling is calculated. A decision is made whether one or more of the mobile terminals is likely to request a handover of its respective connection to a neighboring base station. Based on the current load, the likelihood of requesting handover of the respective connection, and the connection activity level determined for the respective connection, a decision is made whether to terminate the respective connection.

Reducing access latency while protecting against control signaling data processing overload

The number of measurements needed to calibrate an electrical device is reduced. Apparatus and methods minimize output of one or more unwanted signals by determining a calibration setting, in a minimal number of measurements, from determined distances to a best setting. Each distance to a best setting can be determined as a function of the characteristic of the unwanted signal and the measured unwanted signal level. A calibration setting point can be determined by searching for a setting point having a lowest sum of distance errors determined from the calculated distances and from the measured and non measured setting points. The techniques and apparatus are useful for minimizing a number of measurements that would be needed for determining a setting that substantially prevents generation of unwanted output signals, such as carrier leakage (LO-leakage) and unwanted sidebands, and for quickly determining whether an acceptable calibration setting exists for a device.

Fast calibration of electronic components

A power control method in accordance with the present invention synchronizes the transmit power levels at the base stations currently serving a mobile station and an initial transmit power level of a new target base station being added in a diversity handover situation. At the beginning of the handover, a radio network controller orders the serving base stations to measure their respective transmit powers to the mobile station. Each serving base station then measures its transmit power to the mobile station and reports the power level measurements to the radio network controller. An initial transmit power setting is determined for the target base station, and new transmit power settings are determined for the serving base stations synchronized for example to a particular time (t ). At or about synchronizing time t , the target base station transmits to the mobile station at the initial power setting, and at or about the same time, the serving base stations preferably also adjust their transmit powers toward the new values. Alternatively, the serving base stations transmit at their respective new values at or about time t . In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the serving base station power adjustment is performed gradually.
