In some embodiments, a lighting system comprises: a light source; a lens spaced apart from the light source and including a first surface to receive light from the light source, the lens further including a second surface through which at least a portion of the light received by the lens exits; and a cover spaced from the lens and including a first surface to receive at least a portion of the light that exits the lens, the cover further including a second surface through which at least a portion of the light received by the cover exits; the second surface of the lens including a portion convex with respect to the light source; the first surface of the cover including a portion convex with respect to the light source and disposed over the convex portion of the lens. In some embodiments, the second surface of the cover is flat.

Methods and apparatus for use in association with lighting systems

A luminaire includes a housing having an external surface and an internal surface defining an interior volume, with an LED light source mounted on a mounting surface within the interior volume, an internal inter-surface structure within the interior volume in thermal communication with the board and in thermal communication with at least one housing internal surface. The internal inter-surface structure configured to spread heat generated by the LED light source laterally along the internal inter-surface structure. The interior volume of the housing is substantially closed to external air flow. The housing external surface being an about smooth surface free of extruding heat sink fins or ridges, and having a shape sufficient to inhibit the trapping of water or dirt.

A lighting device and method generates monochromatic light from one or more light point sources. A phosphor body is spatially separated from the point light source(s) to receive the monochromatic light generated by the first point light source and provide a multi-wavelength light through luminescence. The multi-wavelength light is emitted from the phosphor body across a multi-dimensional surface. Optionally, a lens body can receive the multi-wavelength light from the multi-dimensional surface and both reflect and refract the multi-wavelength light in an exit distribution out of the lens body.

Remote phosphor lighting devices and methods

Fluorescent lamps, along with their methods of manufacture and use, are provided. The fluorescent lamp can include a discharge tube extending from a first end to a second end; a resistive transparent coating (e.g., a tin oxide thin film layer, such as a fluor-doped tin oxide thin film layer) on the outer surface of the discharge tube; and a pair of electric terminals positioned on the discharge tube such that a first terminal is on the first end and a second terminal is on the second end.
