A linerless label product, method of making, apparatus and method for dispensing the product wherein a convolutely wound web roll has one face coated with pressure sensitive adhesive while the other face is coated with a release material, the adhesive is interrupted in longitudinally spaced areas to provide transversely extending bands free of pressure sensitive adhesive with the web areas between bands being labels embodying alpha shapes, numeric shapes, graphics, thermally activated material and/or self-contained material; the preparation method including providing signal-stimulating means for each band and the apparatus and method of dispensing employs sensing of the signal-stimulating means to transversely sever the web in the bands.

The adhesive bonding strength of a pressure sensitive adhesive on a laminate is selectively modified by applying a discontinuous layer of a non-adhesive material to the pressure sensitive adhesive. Preferably, the laminate is a preformed, label stock, including a label or substrate having a pressure sensitive adhesive on one surface thereof and a release sheet overlying the adhesive. The label is first delaminated from the release sheet to expose the oppositely facing surface of the label and the release sheet. A discontinuous layer of the non-adhesive material is then printed on either the release sheet or the adhesive. The release sheet is relaminated back onto the label to form a modified laminate with new adhesive properties. When the label is then separated from the release layer, the non-adhesive material adheres to the pressure sensitive adhesive to reduce the exposed surface area of the adhesive.

Method of making a laminate having variable adhesive properties

A hidden entry system comprises a document having a localized coating of a non-pressure sensitive heat activated autogenous chromogenic composition to provide a latent image which reveals hidden indicia when heated at moderate temperatures. The hidden entry system is especially useful for contests and promotional forms. Quickly striking the chromogenic composition with a fingernail or blunt object converts the latent image to a visible colored image by frictional heat. The chromogenic composition contains a chromogenic compound and a color developer which are non-pressure sensitive and non-reactive at room temperature. The latent image can be provided by an intimate mixture of the chromogenic compound and the developer or alternatively, one component can be printed on a separate layer or coating of the other component.
