A process for reducing volatile, odor-causing impurities in alkoxylated alcohols comprising adjusting the pH of an alkoxylated alcohol product mixture containing such impurities to a range of from about 7 to about 8.5 to produce an alkaline alkoxylated alcohol mixture and steam stripping the alkaline alkoxylated alcohol mixture at an elevated temperature for a period of time sufficient to produce a steam stripped alkoxylated alcohol containing a reduced amount of odor-causing impurities.

Process for purification of alkoxylated alcohols

A process for preparing an alkoxylation catalyst in which a catalyst is formed by admixing an alkoxylated alcohol with a calcium or strontium containing compound which is dispersible in the alkoxylated alcohol, an inorganic acid and a titanium alkoxide, the pre-mix optionally being heated to a temperature and for a time sufficient to effect at least partial exchange reaction between the alkoxide groups of the titanium alkoxide and the hydroxyl groups of the alkoxylated alcohol, the pre-mix being used in an alkoxylation process to alkoxylate active hydrogen containing compounds such as alcohols.

Surfactant compositions

An improvement in the method of preparing vinyl halide-containing polymers by suspension polymerization is disclosed. Briefly, the improvement comprises 'tail-peaking' the reaction mass prior to stripping in order to remove vinyl halide. By 'tail-peaking' is meant increasing the temperature of polymerization towards the latter part of the polymerization reaction. In one aspect the improvement comprises the additional feature of conducting the polymerization in the presence of a plasticizer.

Preparation of vinyl halide-containing polymers

A process for polymerizing vinyl halide monomer in a large capacity reactor. Liquid polymerization medium comprising water, surfactant, and monomer is charged to the reactor, polymerization catalyst is added, and the polymerization medium is agitated in a manner to provide substantially laminar flow along a circular path about a generally vertical centrally located axis in the reaction zone. The polymerization medium is agitated in a manner to provide localized turbulent mixing near the periphery of the reaction zone, and the polymerization medium is maintained within selected ranges of temperature and pressure through the action of a vertical condensing tube positioned at the top of the reactor.

An improved process for the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride homopolymers is accomplished by the addition of small amount of chain extending agent to the polymerization formula allowing the polymerization to be run at a higher temperature thus making better use of the reactor's heat removal capability. More efficient use of initiator is also accomplished while producing polyvinyl chloride having the desired molecular weight dependent physical properties. The process also allows a faster rate of polymerization.
