A catheter includes an elongate member having a braided reinforcing layer. The reinforcing layer comprises a plurality of continuous filaments that transform from a braided configuration to short axially oriented segments in a least one location along the catheter. Also disclosed is a method of manufacturing a braided elongate member including providing a core, forming at least one braided portion with a plurality of filaments and forming at least one short axially oriented segment with at least a portion of the same plurality of filaments.

A rapid exchange-type catheter for aspiration of embolic debris from a blood vessel includes an elongate aspiration tube and a relatively short guidewire tube mounted beside a distalmost portion of the aspiration tube. A proximal portion of the guidewire tube defines a strain relief segment. In one embodiment, the strain relief segment is formed detached from the aspiration tube. In another embodiment, the strain relief segment is minimally attached to the aspiration tube and becomes detached from the aspiration tube when a sufficient transverse force is applied to urge the guidewire tube away from the aspiration tube.

A catheter includes an elongate member having a braided reinforcing layer encased within a polymeric bonding layer. The reinforcing layer comprises a plurality of continuous filaments that transform from a full complement braid configuration to a partial complement braid configuration in a least one location along the catheter. Also disclosed is a method of manufacturing a braided elongate member including providing a core, forming at least one full complement braid portion with a plurality of filaments and forming at least one partial complement braid portion with a portion of the same plurality of filaments.

Catheter with reinforcing layer having variable strand construction

An intravascular medical catheter and method of manufacturing a medical catheter are provided herein. The medical catheter includes a catheter shaft having an inner liner, a reinforcing section and an outer shell. As provided herein, a groove is formed in the outer shell of the catheter shaft near a distal end of the catheter shaft with a laser. The groove can be filled with a fill section which is made of a relatively soft material. This improves the flexibility of the distal end so that the medical catheter has improved tracking and movement in the body vessel. Further, because the reinforcing section is continuous under the groove, the catheter shaft is durable and inhibits kinking during movement in the body vessel.

Method of making a medical catheter with grooved soft distal segment

A medical catheter including a continuous liner defining a guidewire lumen. The liner has a constant inner diameter and a constant outer diameter. A continuous layer is braided over the liner and encapsulated between the liner and a bump layer. The bump layer has a proximal segment, and a bump section. The bump section has a transition zone at the proximal end of the bump section. The proximal segment has a distal end affixed to the proximal end of the bump section. The proximal segment of the bump layer has an outer diameter which is less than the outer diameter of the bump section of the bump layer. The transition zone has an outer diameter which smoothly transitions from the outer diameter of the distal end of the proximal segment of the bump layer to the larger outer diameter at the distal end of the transition zone. The bump layer is encapsulated between the outer jacket layer and the braided layer. The outer jacket layer has a constant outer diameter and an inner diameter conforming to the variable outer diameter of the bump layer. The bump layer is made of a material with a greater flexural modulus than that of the outer jacket layer, such that the flexibility of the catheter is greater at the distal end of the catheter than at the proximal end of the catheter.

An expandable percutaneous introducer sheath is disclosed which can be selectively enlarged to accommodate a range of sizes of interventional devices. The introducer sheath can retain an enlarged size without requiring an additional support member. The introducer sheath comprises an outer tube which contains expandable gaps along the length of the outer tube, expandable leaflets which are connected to the outer tube, an inner tubular member which is insertable into the outer tube, and a detent means to retain the enlarged size of the outer tube. The outer tube has a cross-sectional profile which is both kink resistant and minimizes the size of the puncture wound in the vasculature by providing a helix in the outer tube. An inner tubular member is inserted into the lumen of the outer tube and, because of the interference fit of the lumen outer tube to the outer diameter of the inner tubular member, the lumen of the outer tube enlarges at the expandable gaps.

Expandable percutaneous introducer sheath

An apparatus and method of making a thinwall guide catheter useful in delivery of therapeutic devices through a body vessel. The method comprises braiding a flat wire over the surface of a cylindrical core, placing a heat bondable polymer tube over the braid, surrounding the polymer tube with a heat shrink sleeve, heating the assembly to a temperature and for a time period sufficient to expand the core into braid interstices and bond the polymer tube to substantially only the outer surface of the braid and finally removing the heat shrink sleeve and core. The resulting guide catheter has approximately half the wall thickness of prior guide catheters and has excellent column stiffness and kink resistance.

Thinwall guide catheter

The present invention is for a stent delivery guide catheter to be used in percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). The stent delivery guide catheter consists of a guide catheter body having proximal and distal ends with a cylindrical outer wall and a coaxial inner wall defining a inner lumen. A bladder is formed between the inner and outer walls and is in fluid communication with an inflation lumen. A radially expandable and compressible stent is located inside the guide catheter body and is removably attached to the inner wall in the area of the bladder. In use, a balloon catheter is slid inside the guide catheter with the balloon positioned under the stent. When the bladder is inflated, the stent is compressed radially inward and is deposited on the balloon catheter. The present invention can also be used without the stent to facilitate the exchange of an over-the-wire balloon catheter. The balloon catheter is pulled proximal to the inflatable bladder inside the guide catheter. The bladder is then inflated and compressed to hold the guidewire while the balloon catheter is exchanged.

Stent delivery guide catheter

A therapeutic catheter and used in percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty with the catheter comprising a shaft (5) a soft tip assembly. The assembly consists of a transition tube (15), a soft tip tube (20), and plug tube (25). The assembly is surrounded by a shrink wrap means. An infrared source (45) is applied to the interface of the shaft (5) and transition tube (15) with the heat being propagated to the transition tube (15) and the soft tip tube (20). The transition tube (15) is formed of materials having a tensile strength of at least 150% of the materials comprising the soft tip tube (20).

Method of catheter segment attachment

A catheter comprising a soft tip segment (5), a transition segment (11), and a shaft segment (3). The soft tip segment (5) has at least two ungular sections (6, 7) removed from the proximal end. The distal end of the transition segment (11) is bonded to the proximal end of the soft tip (5) segment. The transition segment (11) is comprised of materials having substantially higher tensile strength than the soft tip (5) segment. The distal end of the shaft (3) is bonded to the proximal end of the transition segment (11). The distal end of the shaft (3) has at least two ungular sections (2, 4) removed.

Method of soft tip attachment for thin walled catheters

The invention includes an exchange system, a guidewire anchoring means and a method of use for catheters exchangeable over a guidewire (55). The guidewire anchoring means restricts movement between the guidewire (55) and the anchoring means. The anchoring means comprises a shaft (35) with a longitudinal lumen (80) therethrough, the lumen (80) being in fluid communication with a balloon (25 or 30) disposed on the distal end of the shaft (35). A tubular split housing (5 or 10) surrounds the distal end of the shaft (35) and adheres to the balloon (25 or 30), the balloon (25 or 30) being sized to expand to a larger size than the inside diameter of the split housing (5 or 10). The inside diameter of the split housing (5 or 10) is sized to slidably receive a catheter, while the outside diameter of the split housing (5 or 10) is sized to slidably fit within a guide catheter (50 ).
