Adhesive systems may be fabricated to include first and second solid adhesion structures. The first adhesion structure may require an applied normal preload force to achieve adhesion to a surface. The second solid adhesion structure may be separate from but joined to the first adhesion structure such that both adhesion structures are jointly adherable to the surface upon application of the normal preload force.

A crawler device for traversing in a confined environment, searching victims or inspecting defections, comprises an elongated flexible drive shaft extending along a central axis between a proximal end and a distal end, a motor operatively connected to the drive shaft for turning the drive shaft, and a plurality of segments disposed over the drive shaft. Any two adjacent segments are joined by an articulate joint. Each segment has a wheel assembly including drive wheels. At least two segments further include a gear assembly operatively connecting the wheel assembly to the drive shaft. Turning the drive shaft provides distributed traction force to the drive wheels of the at least two segments, and thereby drives the crawler device.

A traveling wave generator includes at least a base link and end link and an intermediate link; a pivot device pivotably interconnecting each pair of links; a drive mechanism interconnecting each pair of links including a drive shaft and a cam on the first link of the pair and on the second link of the pair a follower for engaging the cam for inducing a traveling wave motion in the links; a flexible power transmission device interconnects the shafts of each of the base and intermediate links; and a motive source rotates the shafts.

The transformable vehicle comprises a central chassis assembly having first and second distal ends with an axis passing therebetween, a first wheel assembly mounted to the first distal end, and a second wheel assembly mounted to second distal end. A multifunction transformable vehicle comprising at least two configurational states: a stowed state and a transformed state. In the stowed state, the transformable vehicle comprises a compact structure suitable for storage, transport or deployment. During transition from the stowed state to the transformed state, the first and second wheel assemblies move longitudinally outward along the axis to reveal the central chassis assembly.

A separator plate for a chemical oxygen generator candle includes an elongate rigid thermal insulating section; and at least a first conduit section on one side of the rigid section having a multiplicity of gas flow paths for conducting released oxygen from a burning candle longitudinally along the plate for increasing the burning action of the burning portion of the candle and pre-heating the unburned portion of the candle, and for retaining gas to act as a thermal insulator when the candle is not burning. A plurality of such plates are combined to form a separator assembly for surrounding a candle and a number of such separator assemblies are combined to form a multi-candle oxygen generator.

A hydrogen generator for hydrolyzing hydrides substantially at stoichiometry to provide hydrogen on demand to a fuel cell is disclosed. The generator comprises a sealable, pressurizable, thermally insulated vessel into which a hydride in granular form is loaded. Water, most of which may be a byproduct from the fuel cell, is controllably introduced into the vessel for reaction with the hydride to generate hydrogen. The rate of introduction of the water is determined by the demand for hydrogen at the fuel cell. Heat transfer apparatus is disposed about the vessel to control the temperature of the reaction. A stirring mechanism is disposed in the vessel to prevent clumping of the hydride, to distribute the water to unreacted hydride, and to disperse the heat of the reaction throughout the hydride mass and thence to the heat transfer apparatus. An outlet from the vessel is provided for transfer of the generated hydrogen to the fuel cell. The system is particularly suitable for use in closed systems such as undersea vehicles.
