In a vehicle an auxiliary machine () such as an air compressor is physically associated with the vehicle battery (). The battery provides for substantial additional mass which resists transmission of noise and vibration from the small machine to the vehicle structure (). The small machine () may itself form part of a battery clamp arrangement.

Vibration damper of a vehicle and method of reducing vibration

A hijack avoidance technique avoids presenting an access to more than one of a chain of authentication objects, such as a chain of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) authenticators. A pre-filter determines whether an authentication object should be presented with the access by comparing either all or a portion of a domain suffix, an IP address, or other identification other than the user ID with predetermined values. If the filter criterion is met, the associated authentication object accepts or rejects the access. Otherwise, the access is passed to the next authentication object in the chain. The first authentication object may be associated with a hosting entity and successive authentication objects each associated with different customers of the hosting entity. By virtue of the filtering, each authentication object is presented only with a particular subset of all of the possible access identifiers, which avoids presenting all of the previously unauthenticated accesses to each authentication object in the chain.

Pass-through hijack avoidance technique for cascaded authentication

In an active system, an actor is able to effect action in a subject system. The actor and the subject system exist in an environment which can impact the subject system. Neither the actor nor the subject system has any control over the environment. The actor includes a model and a processor. The processor is guided by the model. The processor is arranged to effect action in the subject system. The subject system is known by the model. This allows the actor to be guided in its action on the subject system by the model of the subject system. Events can occur in the subject system either through the actions of the actor, as guided by the model, or through actions of other actors, or through a change in state of the subject system itself (e.g. the progression of a chemical reaction) or its environment (e.g. the passage of time). The actor keeps the model updated with its own actions. When the processor is processing according to the model, it updates the model with intermediate actions and with the actions it effects in the subject system.

Paramagnetic particle detection

To facilitate installation of cables through bulkheads and other surfaces and to provide electrical protection to apparatus connected to such cables, an assembly comprising electrically conductive blocks (6) clamped in a frame (2) is provided. The mounting blocks 6, each formed of two parts for fitting round a continuous cable length include ribs (11) adapted to grip the sleeving of the cable and an extended rib (10) for contacting screening of the cable. In use, the frame (2) is welded to a bulkhead or other conductive (earthed) element. A section of insulation is removed from the cable and on clamping of the assembly the blocks (6) are compressed together forcing ribs 10 to contact respective screens. Thus any induced electro-magnetic pulses on the cable screens are provided with a low-resistance leakage path.

Bulkhead gland assembly

A conductimetric gas sensor consists of a ptfe body forming an electrolytic cell; two threaded silver electrodes screwed into the ptfe body and bridged by a layer of a hydrophilic gel in contact with an electrolyte in the cell; a reservoir for supplying deionized water to the cell, so that the volume of water between the electrodes is maintained; and a gas-permeable hydrophobic layer through which the hydrophilic gel can be exposed to the gas.

Conductimetric gas sensor

A mobile vehicle for crushing scrap metal, especially for flattening car body shells, has a crusher jaw mechanism (11) carried ahead of a generally conventional vehicle body (12). The jaw includes a press plate (55) above a platform (31). The car body shell (90) is loaded on to the platform by advancing the vehicle towards the body shell and driving the platform under the shell, and is then crushed between the press plate and the platform. The jaw mechanism may be carried on an arm or arms (13) which can be raised and lowered. Side plates (32) and a rear gate (80) may be provided on the crusher jaw mechanism to contain light scrap. The jaws may be tiltable, and may be provided with front fork tines (71) to act as an entry ramp and for manipulating the body shells before and after flattening.

Mobile crusher vehicle

Apparatus for crushing scrap metal, especially for flattening car body shells, has a jaw mechanism (11) which includes a lower jaw member (30) and an upper jaw member (50). The lower jaw carries a platform (31) for the object to be crushed and the upper jaw carries a flat press plate (55). The two jaw members are hinged together behind both the platform and the press plate, and above both the platform and the press plate when the jaws are closed to a position in which the press plate is parallel to, yet spaced from, the platform. Side plates (32) and a rear gate (80) may be provided to contain light scrap in the jaws. The jaws may be tiltable and/or vehicle mounted, and may be provided with front fork tines (71) to act as an entry ramp and for manipulating the scrap.
