Two or more dyes or markers, including a dye or marker having an absorbance peak in the 400 to 500 nm range and including a dye or marker having an absorbance peak in the 560 to 700 nm range are mixed together in appropriate ratios so when added to a liquid, such as a petroleum fuel, at combined levels of from 5 to 100 ppm, the colors of the dyes and/or markers cancel each other such that a &ldquo;water-white&rdquo; liquid still appears &ldquo;water-white&rdquo;.

Color canceling marking systems

Liquid petroleum products and industrial liquids are marked with highly soluble silent fluorescent markers having the formula: ##STR1## where R is selected from a linear or branched C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkylcarboxy radical.

Silent fluorescent petroleum markers

A water-immiscible marker is dissolved in polyethylene glycol or other suitable carrier, and the marker so dissolved is added to a waterborne composition which is used as an additive to a waterborne or water processable composition. Subsequently, the marker is either extracted with a non-polar solvent or detected by means of a surface spot test. From the non-polar solvent, the marker is extracted with an acidic aqueous solution or an alkaline aqueous solution, depending upon the marker, and color-developed. Likewise, a surface spot test can detect the presence of the marker by, if necessary, first softening the marked surface to be tested either chemically or by thermal means, and developing a color with a color-developing reagent placed on the exposed surface. Applications can include the marking of paint, coatings, wax emulsions and water soluble/dispersable additives commonly used in water based applications, e.g., cement additives.

Tagging of waterborne compositions with oil-soluble markers

A highly fluid water-based ink composition that comprises a stable oil-in-water emulsion of a water-reducible solvent dye and solvent, preferably citrus solvent, solution homogeneously dispersed as small finely divided dye-containing oil droplets in an aqueous carrier solution containing an emulsion stabilizer of a water-soluble resin. Water-immiscible solvent dyes, including azo, phthalocyanine, and anthraquinone dyes, are mixed with organic solvents and non-ionic surfactants to form emulsifiable water-reducible true solvent dye-containing solutions. The water-reducible solvent dye solutions are stably emulsified as dye-containing oil droplets in aqueous solutions that contain water, water-soluble resins, and optional organic solvent diluents. The stable oil-in-water ink emulsion is suitable to be ejected through ink-jet printer jet nozzles, or through dispensing tips of felt-tip or roller-ball pens, onto a porous substrate, such as paper, to construct a water-fast printed image on the substrate.

Stable oil-in-water ink emulsions based upon water-reducible solvent

A highly fluid water-based ink composition that comprises a stable oil-in-water emulsion of a water-reducible, water-insoluble nigrosine dye-containing solvent solution, preferably containing a high flash-point and high-boiling point solvent, homogeneously dispersed as small, finely divided dye-containing oil droplets in an aqueous carrier solution containing an emulsion stabilizer of a water-soluble resin. Water-insoluble nigrosine dyes are dissolved preferably in relatively low VOC and non-flammable solvent solutions containing non-ionic surfactants to form emulsifiable water-reducible true nigrosine dye-containing solutions. The water-reducible nigrosine dye-containing solutions are then stably emulsified as dye-containing oil droplets in aqueous solutions that contain water, optional solvent diluents, and water-soluble resins that serves as an emulsion stabilizer. The stable oil-in-water ink emulsion is suitable to be ejected through small ink-jet printer nozzles, or through dispensing tips of felt-tip or roller-ball pens, onto a porous substrate, such as paper, to construct a water-fast printed image on the substrate.

Stable oil-in-water ink emulsions based upon water-reducible nigrosine

A water-reducible composition comprises A) between about 20 and about 50 wt % of a water-insoluble nigrosine, B) between about 25 and about 40 wt % of a solvent having a flashpoint of at least about 141.degree. F. (61.degree. C.) and a boiling point of at least about 280.degree. F. (138.degree. C.), and C) between about 20 and about 40 wt % of a non-ionic surfactant, the weight percentages being based on total weight of A), B), and C). The composition is prepared by dissolving the nigrosine A) in a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkanol to form an alcohol solution, mixing the alcohol solution with the solvent B) and non-ionic surfactant C, and subsequently stripping the C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkanol.

Water-reducible nigrosine dye compositions

Water-immiscible solvent dyes are mixed with citrus solvents and non-ionic surfactants to form a water-reducible true dye solution containing at least 35 wt % of the water-immiscible dye. The dye solution is dispersible in water and infinitely reducible.

Water-reducible dye compositions comprising solvent dyes and citrus

A dye which is either 2-naphthalenol (phenylazo) phenyl azo alkyl derivatives and 1,4-dialkylamino anthraquinone is added to sufficient non-ionic surfactant to compatibilize it with ethanol and an solvent to produce a homogeneous solution. The homogeneous solution is added to ethanol in an amount to provide a desired amount of coloration to the ethanol.

Method of introducing dyes to ethanol

A tag is added to an asphalt additive, typically an anti-stripping agent. The additive dye is mixed with other components of an asphalt composition and melt processed at 300.degree. F. (149.degree. C.) or above to produce an asphalt composition. Presence of the tag to identify presence of the additive is performed by dissolving the asphalt portion of the composition in a water-immiscible solvent and then extracting the tag in an acidic aqueous solution and developing a color with a diazo compound.
