Systems and methods to determine angular offset between reference points on a drill string are achieved automatically using an electronic device, such as a handheld device. A first orientation value corresponding to the first highside reference point is obtained using the electronic device. A second a second orientation value corresponding the second highside reference point is obtained. The electronic device then calculates the angular offset between the first and second orientation values.

Drill string angular offset determination

Systems and methods for drilling a first borehole along a planned first path using a first bottom hole assembly (BHA) while drilling a second borehole using a second BHA along a second path having a defined spatial relationship to the first path. The method includes steps of measuring a distance and a direction of the first BHA relative to the second BHA, automatically adjusting the second path based in part on the measured distance and the measured direction so as to maintain the spatial relationship, and automatically steering the second BHA to follow the adjusted second path.

Automated wellbore ranging

A method and system for ranging between two bottom hole assemblies (BHA). The method and system may include transmitting an electromagnetic field from a ranging device disposed on a first BHA, and measuring the electromagnetic field with a receiver disposed on a second BHA to form a measurement set. The method and system may further include an information handling system that may compare the measurement set to a decay rate of the electromagnetic field and identifying a distance between the ranging device and the receiver based at least in part on the decay rate.

Bottom hole assembly mounted solenoid for magnetic ranging

A ranging system having magnets positioned at various locations along the drive system. Location of the magnetics is shifted to different points on the drilling string to remove the need for a nearby bit sub that would detrimentally affect the steerability of the drilling system.

Steerability of downhole ranging tools using rotary magnets

The disclosure provides for a bottom hole assembly that comprises a stator solenoid winding transmitter assembly operable to generate a magnetic field. The stator solenoid winding transmitter assembly comprises a coil comprising a plurality of windings and a sleeve, wherein the coil is disposed within the sleeve. The bottom hole assembly further comprises a solenoid control assembly disposed adjacent to the stator solenoid winding transmitter assembly, wherein the solenoid control assembly is communicatively coupled to a controller and electrically connected to the coil and a mud motor comprising a rotor and a stator, wherein the stator solenoid winding transmitter assembly is disposed around the mud motor.
