A method and system for removing SO,and SO,from a flue gas produced by the burning of a fossil fuel. Particulates are removed from the flue gas to produce partially cleaned flue gas. A sufficient amount of calcium-based, sodium based or magnesium-based dry sorbent, preferably having a particle size larger than 1.0-2.0 microns, is injected into the flue gas to react with and remove substantially all of the SO,from the partially cleaned flue gas to produce a substantially SO,-free flue gas containing reacted and unreacted dry sorbent. The substantially SO,-free flue gas is conveyed to wet scrubber means for removing SO,to produce cleaned flue gas. In a first embodiment, sufficient dry sorbent is provided to remove desired amounts of SO,and SO,. In a second embodiment, a make-up reagent provided to the wet scrubber means wets the dry sorbent, removes both the reacted and unreacted dry sorbent from the substantially SO,-free flue gas, and makes the unreacted dry sorbent available as a reagent for SO,removal, the make-up reagent and the unreacted dry sorbent reacting with and removing the SO,from the substantially SO,-free flue gas to produce cleaned flue gas.

Method and system for SO2 and SO3 control by dry sorbent/reagent injection and wet scrubbing

A system for eliminating mist from a flue gas while providing air toxic control includes a wet scrubber housing having an inlet at one of the housing for the entry of the flue gas and an outlet at an opposite end of the housing for the exit of the flue gas. Sprayers are located in the housing for spraying the flue gas with a cleaning liquid in order to remove contaminants from the flue gas. At least one heat exchanger is located in the housing above the sprayers in order to remove entrained contaminants from the flue gas by cooling the flue gas. The flue gas is channeled from the inlet past the collection trays, sprayers and heat exchanger prior to exiting the housing through the outlet. A mist eliminator is also provided for eliminating mist from the flue gas.

A method and system for removing SO.sub.3 and SO.sub.2 a flue gas produced by the burning of a fossil fuel. Particulates are removed from the flue gas to produce partially cleaned flue gas. A method for monitoring the oxidation rate in a flue gas desulfurization system having a slurry comprises locating a monitor in the system for accessing the slurry. A sample is periodically drawn from the slurry by the monitor wherein a titration is performed on each sample. The titration performed on each sample comprises adding a potassium iodate KIO.sub.3 solution, a potassium iodide KI starch solution and an acid solution to the sample in the monitor for causing the sample to exhibit a color corresponding to the oxidation rate.

An integrated flue gas treatment desulfurization system for treating flue gas exhausted from an electrostatic precipitator and passing at a flue gas flow velocity in the range of 10-20 ft./sec. or more through a condensing heat exchanger and a wet flue gas scrubber. A combined regenerative scrubber and condensing heat exchanger system comprises a housing having an inlet and an outlet for channeling flue gas into and out of the housing. A first heat exchanger is located in the housing for contacting a downward flow of the flue gas for providing an initial cooling of the flue gas. The flue gas is channeled through a second heat exchanger in an upward direction for providing a further cooling of the flue gas. A flue gas desulfurization process wherein the liquid bottoms product from the scrubber tower is subject to forced oxidation in a reaction/oxidation tank. Afterwards, this oxidized bottoms product is delivered to hydroclone means for separation into an overflow stream containing an aqueous slurry of mostly fines, fly ash, and unused reagent and an underflow stream containing predominately a gypsum slurry. The overflow stream is initially recycled back to the tank with another stream being subsequently returned or recycled back to the scrubber tower while the underflow stream is dewatered for the removal of the gypsum therein.
