Systems and methods for mitigating failure mode effects in a steer-by-wire system. The system includes a controller configured to alter a direction of the vehicle when the controller is in a failure mode. A steering device is coupled to a detector. The detector is configured to detect a steering input from a driver and output a signal representative of the steering input. A first actuator is coupled to a first control device. The first control device is configured to generate a first control signal representative of the steering input when the controller is in the failure mode. The first actuator alters the direction of the vehicle by removing energy from the vehicle. A second actuator is coupled to a second control device. The second control device is configured to generate a second control signal representative of the steering input when the controller is in the failure mode. The second actuator alters the direction of the vehicle by adding energy to the vehicle.

Electronically controlled axle assembly

A brake wear sensor in which a body of electrical insulating material mounts a pair of electrically conductive plates such that edges of the plates are spaced from each other at a surface of the body. The body has an external thread adapted to be received within an internally threaded opening in a brake pad to position the surface of the body and the edges of the plates adjacent to a braking surface of the brake pad. Electrical circuitry is connected to the plates for monitoring wear at the surface of the body as a function of changes in capacitance between the plates, and a gauge is coupled to the circuitry for indicating brake wear as a function of such changes in capacitance.

A fuel control system for delivering gaseous fuel from a source through an air/fuel mixture to a gas-operated engine that includes at least one sensor for operative coupling to the engine to provide at least one electronic sensor signal responsive to engine operating conditions. An electronic control unit is responsive to the sensor signal(s) for providing a fuel control signal indicative of a desired quantity of fuel to be delivered to the engine. A pressure regulator, for disposition between the fuel source and the fuel/air mixture, is responsive to the fuel control signal for controlling delivery of gaseous fuel to the mixer. The pressure regulator includes a housing having an inlet for connection to the fuel source and an outlet for connection to the mixer. A valve is disposed within the housing and biased toward closure by a primary pressure regulating spring for controlling flow of fuel from the inlet to the outlet. A solenoid force motor is mounted on the housing and has a force coil for receiving and translating the fuel control signal. A rigid actuating member is driven by and extends from the coil into the housing directly to the valve-actuating lever for modulating control of the operative position of the valve in bypass mechanical force transmission relationship to the regulating spring, and thereby modulating control flow of gaseous fuel through the housing, as a function of the fuel control signal to the pressure regulator.

Fuel control system for a gas-operated engine

A system for controlling operation of engine fuel injectors that includes a feed-forward control unit responsive to signals from sensors on the engine for supplying a basic electronic control signal for the injectors. A neural network is connected in parallel with the feed-forward control unit for receiving the sensor signals and multiplying the sensor signals by associated weighting factors. The sensor signals multiplied by the weighting factors are combined to produce a network output signal, which in turn is combined with the basic control signal from the feed-forward control unit to control operation of the fuel injectors. The weighting factors in the neural network are modified as a function of inputs from the engine sensors so as to reduce any errors in the sensor output signals as compared with desired values.

An internal combustion engine system that is selectively powered by an enhanced air/fuel mixture. The supply of fuel to the cylinders of an internal combustion engine is increased in response to the addition of a supplemental oxidizing agent into an air/fuel mixture. The additional fuel may be added by increasing the duty cycle of fuel injectors mounted proximate the individual cylinders. In addition, the ignition timing is adjusted in accordance with the change in the density of the air/fuel mixture. The amount of supplemental oxidizing agent provided to the cylinders may be regulated by increasing in a controlled manner the rate at which the supplemental oxidizing agent is supplied over a period of time. Furthermore, the control unit for the engine receives and responds to a number of external operating parameters including the oxygen content of the engine exhaust and the traction of the tires.

An engine fuel delivery control system includes an engine having at least one fuel injector fuel injector responsive to electronic control signals for delivering fuel to the engine cylinders and a plurality of sensor for supplying electrical sensor signals as various functions of engine operating conditions. An electronic engine control unit includes an electronic memory storing engine control parameters in a variety of look-up tables, a microprocessor-based controller for periodically addressing the memory tables and obtaining required control parameters as a function of sensor signal inputs, and circuitry for supplying control signals to the injectors as a predetermined function of the control parameters obtained from the look-up tables. Apparatus for selectively varying the control parameters in the look-up tables includes facility for up-loading selected tables from the engine control unit memory, monitoring engine operation as reflected by addressing of the parameter tables in real time, and selectively initiating a programming mode of operation. In such programming mode of operation, addressing of the control tables is inhibited in the electronic control unit, and the control parameters obtained from the tables immediately prior to onset of the programming mode of operation are employed to supply control signals to the injectors during the programming mode of operation. In this way, engine operation continues uninterrupted during the programming mode of operation.
